Sometimes your favorite team drafts a guy that tanks and sometimes the team ends up with bad luck, like getting placed in the wrong spot by a draft lottery.

I'm a Timberwolves fan and have known a lot of lottery agony. The Twolves have been in the lottery 13 times and have never improved their position while they've lost ground 7 times. The worst blow came in 1992 when the Twolves had the worst record in the league, but fell to the #3 spot and ended up with Christian Laettner instead of Shaquille O'Neal (not that he would ever have stayed long term) or Alonzo Mourning.

As for draft tanks, the Vikings picked Troy Williamson #7 overall in 2005, once of the many reasons Mike Tice is no longer the head coach.

How did Lattener draft pick kill your team, 3 yrs later you got Kg then the enxt yr you got Stephon and KG and Marbury would have taken over the league but Kevin Mchale and Marbury's thirst for cream hurt the franchise for awhile

Coin flip between The Lakers and The Bulls for the number one pick in the 1979 NBA Draft. Lakers win the coin flip and draft Magic Johnson. The Bulls draft second and get David Greenwood.

I don't think there was a bigger bad luck lottery pick than Len Bias.

NY Giants 1991-Jarrod Bunch, followed by Dave Brown in 1992, Thomas Lewis in 1994, and Cedric Jones in 1996. These guys all sucked balls!

could probably fill a page with the Leafs mis-picks over the years, this one was particularly bad as it came at a time when the team was about to take a stab at success, as it is, the misery continues

Toronto Maple Leafs take Scott Pearson 6th overall in the 1988 Draft

Notable players taken after Pearson: Jeremy Roenick, Teemu Selanne, Rob Brind'Amour

Winnipeg Jets select the immortal Jimmy Mann in 1979 NHL Entry Draft right before Michel Goulet and Kevin Lowe are selected.

Oakland Raiders selecting Jamarcus Russell. Enough said.

This is awful, but Jamarcus is probably worse.

Look at the Atlanta Hawks picks over the past 25 years. Other than a small handful of decent players and one traded superstar in Pau Gasol, I dare you find an overall worse group. I dare you.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/ATL/draft.html

Then scroll down to 1979. None of the picks played in the NBA. In several years only one did.

Here's the kicker. This is the team that drafted Jorge Gonazlez (1990). This is the team that drafted El Gigante and subsequently caused him to become a wrestler.

Especially since the 49ers passed on Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers to get him.

I would rather have Alex Smith or JaMarcus Russell than Ryan Leaf.   Smith is at least still playing after 6 seasons and Smith and Russell both have a higher career QB rating than Leaf ever enjoyed.

In 1987, the Clippers had three of the top thirteen picks in the draft.  With them, the Clips took Reggie Williams from Georgetown ahead of Scottie Pippin, Joe Wolf from North Carolina ahead of Mark Jackson and Ken Norman from Illinois ahead of Reggie Lewis.  They all stunk in the NBA, especially Williams who was always perceived as a tough guy at Georgetown but was timid and ineffective in the NBA.

The Trailblazers aren't "my team" by any stretch, but I think the poster child for bad draftday judgment will always be the Blazers taking notoriously fragile Sam Bowie ahead of Michael Jordan.  Worked out okay for Chicago, though.

I would think the Bucks trading Dirk Nowitizki for Tractor Traylor would still stick in your craw bit also.  ;)
