If he's the best available / that we can afford, then it was at least a sensible trade. Time will tell if it was a good one.

Boston is apparently kicking the tires on Erik Bedard. I don't know what his contract situation is but it looks like Seattle might not be asking for too much in return. There is a bit of nervousness in Boston right now as it looks like Clay Buchholz might be out a lot longer than was originally thought.

The way Bedard pitched tonight (1.1 IP, 4 BBs, 3 hits, 5 earned runs), it looks like Boston didn't kick the tires - it looks like they kicked the crap out of him.

The Tigers have acquired Mariners starter Doug Fister. The deal may include the Tigers' Charlie Furbush and Casper Wells and Mariners pitcher David Pauley. Detroit had called up top pitching prospect Jacob Turner to start Saturday, but with this move Turner may be ticketed back to the minors after his debut. The Milwaukee Brewers acquired utility player Jerry Hairston Jr. from the Washington Nationals Saturday. In exchange, the Nationals received minor league outfielder Erik Komatsu. "Jerry is a valuable addition to our ball club with the injures to Carlos Gomez and Rickie Weeks," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said. "He is a versatile player who has experience at every position except catcher and pitcher. He also provides an energetic and veteran presence." Weeks is on the 15-day disabled list after spraining his left ankle Wednesday in a game against the Chicago Cubs, and likely will be out two to six weeks. Gomez broke his left collarbone July 20 making a diving catch in a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and is expected to be out six weeks. Hairston, 35, hit .268 with four home runs and 24 RBIs in 75 games this season with the Nationals, with whom he played mostly third base and the outfield. Komatsu, 23, was batting .294 in 93 games with Double-A Huntsville this season. He was taken in the eighth round of the 2008 draft, and was the Brewers' minor league player of the year last season.

This one is only a rumor. The Dodgers are trying to trade Furcal. With less than two days remaining before the non-waiver trade deadline, the Cardinals have focused on acquiring a shortstop in a market an official with the team once described as thin on options at that position. As part of their search for an upgrade at shortstop, the Cardinals have had ongoing discussions with the Los Angeles Dodgers about switch-hitter Rafael Furcal, a baseball source confirmed to The Post-Dispatch. Diamondbacks Acquire Jason Marquis The Diamondbacks added an innings eater for the stretch drive today, acquiring righty Jason Marquis from the Nationals for shortstop prospect Zach Walters, the teams announced today. Marquis returns to the NL West, where he won 15 games in '09 for the Rockies. Marquis, 32, has a 3.95 ERA, 5.3 K/9, 2.9 BB/9, 0.6 HR/9, and 54.0% groundball rate in 120 2/3 innings this year. Our projected Elias rankings have him well short of Type B status, and he's owed $2.5MM on the season. Aside from last year, the veteran righty is known for taking the ball every fifth day, and he'll slot in nicely at the back end of Arizona's rotation. The D'Backs take on all of the $2.47MM remaining on Marquis' contract. The Diamondbacks selected Walters in the ninth round of last year's draft. The 21-year-old has a .302/.377/.485 line with 42 extra base hits in 412 plate appearances at Class A South Bend this season. He has mostly played short, but has also appeared in ten-plus games at second and third. Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi broke the story and Jim Bowden added detail. Ben Nicholson-Smith contributed to this post. So basically, the Dbacks gave away NOTHING and get a decent pitcher, while we gave away 4 pieces and got 2 decent pitchers?
