In 2 weeks at Daytona, Kurt Busch has destroyed 3 Cup cars and 1 Nationwide car for Phoenix racing...James Finch may go broke hiring him at this pace..

I believe I heard they just have a handshake, not a contract... not sure if true though.

yeah, I know Kurt is only driving for a percentage of race winnings with him, he doesn't have a salary..

Man, think about that, his being a real asshole finally cost him a LOT of money. BASE salary for a guy like him at Penske would be like $2-$3 million a year guaranteed then like 45% or so of race winnings, then a cut of souvenir sales. Even on an off year he was pulling in minimum $5 million a year...now he's probably taking a 50/50 split on race earnings..

You are right, his attitude has cost him so much. Souvenir sales are huge for these guys. When I'd go to New Hampshire when he first came up he almost always did 2 signings, once early in the weekend, then when the gates opened race day he was one of the few there every year on the Sunday. I'd guess most people in his line bought at least a 20 buck hat to have him sign, even if he wasn't their favorite, they still wanted something from a driver. That adds up quickly.

What's funny is one of the main reasons he left Roush is that Roush keeps all souvenir money, he pays more in salary but doesn't cut in the drivers on the souvenirs and that pissed Kurt off and that's basically THE reason he left..now, over the last few years the few fans he has left are probably gone, I know the other year when I was at Charlotte there was NOBODY at his souvenir trailer..I bet he'd take that deal with Roush now..lol..

$200.000 at half way point may make the middle of this race a little interesting.... DW stated he didn't even make that much when he won all those years ago.

I didn't know that about Roush keeping the dough, like I stated he was there twice, even race day... I'd be ticked at all that lost dough, then being shoved out there for the dog and pony show when many drivers didn't even make one appearance at the merch trucks all weekend.

I agree he'd probably take that deal now.

Well, they get appearance pay and all..trust me, none of them are hurting for money, the only guys that actually probably have a beef with that Roush deal would be guys like Junior and Danica and big names that are guaranteed HUGE merch sellers. Carl was one of those and that was one of the deals keeping him from signing so early last year but Ford kicked in stock and a personal services contract that made up the difference..the last numbers I heard with Carl was he's now getting around $7 million base pay a year and then a cut of his earnings and he also has personal sponsorship deals that pay off big..

That said though, saw where Forbes listed Junior making around $28 million last year, and probably over half that is just his souvenir cut..

Jeff Gordon just blew up at lap 81 bringing out another caution.

Jeff said his temperature gauge never fluctuated, and Kenseth said the EXACT same thing when he started overheating, said he thinks the gauge is broken..odd that Jeff would have the same problem..

Especially when it's 2 different models of cars.

Terry Labonte just spun after trying to stay out for the half way bonus... Frankie Stoddard is his crew chief today, and he was always funny on the radio in New Hampshire every week, and was nice when I met him once. Good guy, and good racing mind IMO.

Still not sure if Marcos actually got into him.

Anybody predicting a "big one" at halfway? So far it has been a bad night for Hendrick...
