Looks like they will be buyers on a few weeks. What will they be looking for?

They need at least one more bat to be safe. Doesn't need to be a HR hitter, but they do need to get another decent bat

Marte is coming up from AAA after the break, he's their top prospect and is basically another Andrew McCutchen with even more speed. I don't expect him to be lights out right from the start, but if he's anything close to advertised they won't need to sell the farm to get a decent bat. His main shortcoming seems to be not having enough patience at the plate, so if that's his biggest flaw I can deal with that. Karstens looks like he's back in form after mowing down Houston for 8 innings. Hanrahan is starting to worry me, he seems to be trying to force things too much and his last 3 save chances have been way more nerve wracking than they should have been. If they can get a decent bat in a trade for him, they should do it in a heartbeat. Jason Grilli has had the exact same numbers (except for saves of course since he doesn't get the opportunities), and could step in and be a closer with no drop-off.

Pirate first round pick from Stanford pitcher Mark Appel could not come to terms with the team and has decided to return to Stanford. Tough break for thr Pirates.

Reds 1B Joey Votto is going to be out 3-4 weeks following arthroscopic knee surgery. This should be a good time for the Pirates to put some distance between themselves and the Reds. Edit: corrected a grammar error. Last edited on Tue Jul 17th, 2012 01:37 am by foolio ____________________ I'm so vain. I bet Carly wrote that song about me. |

The Pirates also lucked out in having 40% of their remaining schedule against the bottom four teams in the NL (Cubs, Astros, Rockies, Padres).

The Pirates went 28-13 before the break and only had a one-game lead on the Reds. Highly unlikely they're going to keep up that pace.

lost 3 of 4 since the break not looking good, MLB radio was saying there is a rumor the Pirates are interested in Ichiro

hearing all kinds of rumors from Cole Hamels (that won't happen) to Juston Upton- which is more likely because what the Bucs need is another 240 hitter

they won't be trading McCutecheon for a few years yet but this is one of many online stories about Hamels http://www.csnphilly.com/baseball-philadelphia-phillies/phillies-talk/Could-Hamels-be-headed-to-Pittsburgh?blockID=739266&feedID=693
