1. McCutchen cooled down considerably, which was inevitable.

2. Alvarez stopped hitting HRs. Except for one week when he was hot, he's been negligible in the second half.

3. Starting pitching isn't as good. McDonald went from excellent to awful, Burnett is still OK, but not nearly as good.

4. Bullpen is less reliable, probably from overwork.

5. The defense has fallen off drastically in the last month.

There's been a major decline in all three phases.

So are we now all appreciating how they've collapsed?

Even if they do not make the playoffs, finishing at or above .500 be great news for Pittsburgh

is there hope for next year or is Hanranhan gone, Burnett gave us his last good year, McDonald has Steve Blass disease, Alvarez, Walker, Marte don't get any better, McCutcheon has a stellar first half and is mario Mendoza in August and Sept?

McCutchen is the one guy you definitely don't have to worry about.  He'll be fine.  Some of those other guys though, I wouldn't count on building around.

Like Burnett. As good as he has been this year, he can very easily slide back to mediocrity next year. You just don't know with him.

5 losses in a row now? Grew up in Philly when the Pirates were the natural rival and when they had Stargill, Parker, Stennett and the rest. Hard to hate them now though given all the years (now decades) of ineptitude. They do have some young talent. They lasted longer this year than last. Maybe next year will be the "real" year.

It keeps getting harder and harder saying wait till next year.  Losing 2 of 3 to the loly Astros doesn't help.  need to go 5-3 this next week to end up 500 (unless they make up 2 games?)

There are 10 games left -- 4 at NY, 3 vs Reds and 3 vs Braves at home.

wow we can easily end up 10 games UNDER 500.  This might be the most dissappointing baseball season I ever suffered thru as a Pirates fan.  In other years they just sucked but in August we were 16 games over 500 and the streak was all but ended, now wiith those teams to play there is 0 chance we end up 500.  If fans don't get angry and there isn't some shake up somethings wrong, either the manager blew it, GM or time to cut lose shitty players.

I feel your pain. I'm a Cubs fan.
