Report: Ex-Detroit Pistons star Ben Wallace gets year in jail for accident, will serve two days

Former Detroit Pistons center Ben Wallace pleaded no contest today to leaving the scene of an accident in Henrico, Va., in February, according to WWBT-TV in Richmond, Va.

He was sentenced to one year in prison, with all but two days suspended, WWBT says. He was booked into Henrico West jail today and is expected to be released Wednesday.

An SUV belonging to Wallace crashed through a fence and hit a tree in Henrico County in the early morning hours of Feb. 8; the vehicle was empty when officials arrived at the scene. Wallace entered his guilty plea today, according to WWBT.

Wallace, who attended nearby Virginia Union from 1994-96, played for the Pistons from 2000-06, then again from 2009-12. He won an NBA championship with the 2003-04 team.

Three years ago, Wallace was charged with a DWI and carrying a concealed weapon in Bloomfield Township, and was sentenced to one year of probation.

from tsn.ca:

Winnipeg Jets' forward Evander Kane is being sued in British Columbia over an alleged assault in Vancouver last summer.

A statement of claim filed on behalf of Vancouver resident Lev Makievsky says he was returning home from work Aug. 10, 2013, in the downtown area when he was assaulted by Kane, who is from Vancouver.

It gives no further details of the alleged incident but lists a long series of injuries Makievsky says he incurred, including a concussion, and claims he has "permanent physical disability."

He's seeking unspecified damages.

The statement of claim was filed only last Friday and there is no statement of defence.

The Winnipeg Jets said they would have no comment on the statement of claim and Makievsky's claims have not been proven in court.

from tsn.ca:

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Dante Cunningham was charged Friday with assault after being accused of choking his girlfriend during an argument.

A criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court said his girlfriend told police they got into the argument early Thursday at his suburban Minneapolis home. The woman, who is not named in the complaint, told police he kicked down a locked bedroom door, grabbed her around the neck and slammed her against the wall, choking her for 15 to 20 seconds during which she could not breathe.

"Victim's eyes were watering and she felt like she was being strangled to death," the complaint alleges.

The woman told police he then dropped her, and she called 911.

According to the complaint, their relationship began last summer and they had been living together for eight months. Police said Thursday that she did not require medical treatment.

Cunningham was charged with one felony count of domestic assault by strangulation. The 26-year-old remained jailed Friday evening with bail set at $40,000. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.

He was unable to join the Timberwolves when they left Thursday on a two-game road trip to Florida.

The team issued a statement Thursday saying they were gathering more information.

"The Minnesota Timberwolves organization takes the matter very seriously and does not condone the type of behaviour that is associated with this situation," the statement read. "However, we need to let the legal process run its course, and will have further comment at the appropriate time."

from tsn.ca:

Toronto Raptors centre Jonas Valanciunas was arrested for impaired driving in Wasaga Beach, roughly two hours north of Toronto, early Monday morning.

According to an Ontario Provincial Police release, Valanciunas was charged with "Exceed 80" after an investigation revealed he had been in control of his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

OPP officers were responding to a report that open beer bottles had been spotted in a silver vehicle going through a drive-thru at approximately 2:30 a.m.

Police traced the alleged vehicle to a residence nearby and Valanciunas, the driver, was placed under arrest. It's unclear whether he was alone at the time.

"I hold myself to a high standard and take my role as a member of the Toronto Raptors very seriously," said the 21-year-old in a statement released by the team Monday evening. "I apologize to the organization, my teammates, my family and my fans, and regret any negativity this incident has brought upon them."

The Raptors were in between a pair of days off at the time of the incident.

"We were made aware this morning of the incident involving Jonas Valanciunas and are disappointed he has put himself in this situation," the Raptors added in a release. "We take this matter very seriously as we have high expectations for all members of this organization."

Valanciunas is scheduled to appear in court in Collingwood on April 22, in the midst of Toronto's first-round playoff series.

If the Raptors' second-year centre is convicted of the charge he will likely face supplementary discipline from the NBA. League precedent suggests he could face a one or two-game suspension, issued following a conviction.

from cbssports.com:

Colin Kaepernick's name is attached to an information report in Miami

Thursday was not full of good news for Colin Kaepernick, as his name was connected with a sexual assault information report with the City of Miami Police Department.

The news first surfaced via TMZ.com, who cited law enforcement sources that told them Kaepernick was being investigated for a possible sexual assault.

A Miami police spokesperson told CBSSports.com that police are following up on an information report that involves the 49ers quarterback.

In that report, a copy of which was obtained by CBSSports.com, a woman, whose name is redacted, states that on April 1, she went to the apartment of Seahawks receiver Ricardo Lockette, who played for the 49ers in 2012. At the apartment were Kaepernick and 49ers wide receiver Quinton Patton.

The woman states that the group "talked for a while and she mixed some drinks for all of them and gave them shots." The woman states "they told her in order to drink the shots she had to 'hit' the bong which contained marijuana."

The woman states she "started to feel lightheaded and went to a bedroom to lay down." She says she "took off her jacket and jewelry" at which point "Mr. Kaepernick came behind her into the bedroom and started kissing her."

She "advised that Mr. Kaepernick started to undressed [sic] her" and that "she got completely naked."

At that point she claims Kaepernick left the bedroom and that "they did not have sex." At that point in time, the woman claims Patton and Lockette "peeked" into the room and she yelled "What are you doing? Where's Colin? Get out!"

The woman says they closed the door and left but she cannot remember anything after that. She says she woke up in a hospital bed but doesn't know how she got there.

The woman acknowledged a prior sexual history with Kaepernick.

It could be semantics, as Miami Chief of Police Manuel Orosa said the department is investigating.

"There was an incident and we are investigating," Orosa told the Miami Herald.

"The 49ers organization is aware of the recent media report regarding Colin Kaepernick and is in the process of gathering the pertinent facts," the 49ers said in a statement.

from tsn.ca:

Tampa Bay Lightning left wing Ryan Malone was charged Saturday with DUI and possession of cocaine after a traffic stop, police said.

An officer saw Malone's SUV strike a curb after making a left turn from the centre lane early Saturday, said Tampa Police Lt. Paul Lusczynski. After being pulled over, Malone got out of his vehicle, and the officer smelled alcohol on his breath, Lusczynski said.

According to the police report, the officer also found 1.3 grams of cocaine in one of Malone's pockets.

Malone refused to take field sobriety tests, but a breath test given at the jail recorded blood alcohol levels of 0.112 and 0.116 per cent, Lusczynski said. Florida law considers a driver impaired at 0.08.

Malone was released from the Hillsborough County jail on US$2,500 bond. Jail records didn't show whether he had an attorney. Police impounded Malone's SUV.

Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman said Malone would not travel with the team for Tampa Bay's final regular season game Sunday against the Washington Capitals. He declined further comment.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly released a statement Saturday afternoon.

"We are aware of the situation this morning involving Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Molone," Daly said. "Under the terms of the collectively bargained joint NHL/NHLPA Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program, Mr. Malone is subject to mandatory evaluation and, if deemed necessary by the program doctors, treatment pursuant to the terms of that program.

"His future playing status, both in the near term and during the playoffs, will be determined in accordance the terms of our SABH program."

The Lightning are set to meet Montreal in the first round of the playoffs.

Malone has 15 points (five goals, 10 assists) and 67 penalty minutes in 57 games this season. He has 370 points (179-191) in 641 career NHL regular-season games with the Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins.

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport after authorities said he became belligerent during a security screening and threatened that he had a bomb.

The 24-year-old player was randomly selected for a secondary screening at Terminal 1 and became uncooperative with the process, airport police Sgt. Karla Ortiz said. She said he told a TSA agent that he had a bomb before walking to the gate. When airport police officers caught up with him, Ortiz said Smith became uncooperative and was taken into custody.

He was booked for investigation of making a false bomb threat, Ortiz said

Keyshawn Johnson arrested for Domestic Battery.

from usatoday.com:

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says former NFL and Southern California receiver Keyshawn Johnson has been arrested after a report of a domestic dispute.

A Sheriff's Department statement says deputies responded to a residence in Calabasas at 12:48 a.m. PT Monday and determined the resident and his ex-girlfriend were involved in a domestic dispute, and the resident was arrested for misdemeanor domestic battery.

The department subsequently identified the resident as Johnson, who posted bond at 9:15 a.m. and was released.

In the NFL, Johnson played for the New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys and Carolina Panthers.

He's currently an ESPN commentator and analyst. ESPN says it's aware of the arrest and is looking into the matter.

A call to Johnson's agent was not immediately returned.

crab legs ?????

Florida State baseball coach Mike Martin said in a statement Wednesday he has suspended pitcher and Heisman trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston from the Seminoles' baseball team "as a result of his citation" on Tuesday night.

A report by Tomahawknation.com said Winston was cited for shoplifting crab legs at a Publix grocery store in Tallahassee, Fla. The site did not attribute the report. Leon County Sheriff's Public Information Officer Lt. James McQuaig told USA TODAY Sports he would "not confirm or deny anything on Jameis Winston" before a scheduled 2 p.m. ET news conference.

"I am confident he will complete his community service obligation and the situation will be resolved soon," Martin said in a statement released by Florida State.

Florida State football coach Jimbo Fisher said in the release, "I fully support Coach Martin's decision and will also make sure that Jameis meets all obligations, which I know he will."

Leon County Sheriff public records clerk Anita Muellei told USA TODAY Sports the "case was still being processed." Tallahassee Police Department officer David Northway said there were no records of an arrest under their jurisdiction.

Phone calls by USA TODAY Sports have not been returned by Winston's attorney, Tim Jansen, or by the FSU athletics department.

In response to recent requests: TPD has NOT had any contact with Jameis Winston regarding an alleged recent citation.

Last November The Associated Press, citing Tallahassee city records, reported Winston and teammates were questioned by police in November 2012 in regard to a BB gun battle. The AP also obtained a July 2013 record of a Burger King employee reporting to police that Winston was stealing soda from the restaurant.

Winston was accused of raping another FSU student on Dec. 7, 2012. The two met at Potbelly's the night before, and the woman rode in a taxi back to Winston's apartment according to police records.

Afterward, he drove her back to campus on his scooter, she told campus police when she reported the alleged assault within hours and had a rape kit taken.

The woman identified Winston as her attacker on Jan. 10, 2013 when she heard his name in roll call in class at the start of the spring semester. Despite that, Tallahassee police Det. Scott Angulo did not interview Winston, collect his DNA or interview teammates who were with him that night.

The case was moved to inactive on Feb. 11, 2013 with Angulo citing the woman's desire not to pursue the case.

It became a major national story in the midst of Winston's Heisman Trophy-winning season in November.

After media outlets requested documents related to the case, the state attorney's office began investigating. Winston's DNA was ultimately confirmed to be on the woman's clothing, but he has said through his attorney that the sexual encounter was consensual.

Two teammates, Chris Casher and Ronald Darby, provided sworn affidavits to that effect through Winston's attorney, Tim Jansen.

Winston was not charged criminally, but Florida State is now under investigation by the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights for its handling of sexual assault cases.

The woman filed a Title IX complaint in March, and OCR opened an investigation in April. Under Title IX, schools are obligated to investigate reports of sexual assault in a prompt, thorough and impartial manner and provide equitable grievance procedures.

Guidance from the department says an investigation should typically be done within 60 days. FSU officials did not meet with Winston until late January, two weeks after FSU won a BCS national championship and more than a year after the alleged assault, an attorney for the woman confirmed.

FSU's decision not to pursue code of conduct charges was made, at least in part, based on Winston's unwillingness to answer questions on the advice of his lawyer, said one of woman's attorneys, Baine Kerr.

Casher and Darby, meanwhile, face a combined five code of conduct charges related to their witnessing – and in Casher's case, video recording – what happened.

Nice way to start off with a new team.

from tsn.ca:

Chicago Bears wide receiver Josh Morgan has been arrested and charged with punching a man outside a Washington nightclub.

DC police spokesman Officer Paul Metcalf confirmed Monday night that a man named Josh Morgan was arrested early Sunday and charged with simple assault, a misdemeanour. The Bears say they are aware of "Josh Morgan's presence at a weekend incident in Washington, D.C.," and are gathering information.

Morgan agreed to a one-year contract with Chicago last week. He played for Washington for each of the previous two seasons.

Morgan told WRC-TV in Washington that he didn't touch the man. The TV station also reported that Morgan was issued a citation to appear in court.

More on the Winston case:

Maj. Michael Wood said that after Winston was contacted by deputies at his apartment, he said he had forgotten to pay.

Well that's completely understandable - I often walk out of supermarkets with food completely forgetting that I should have paid for those items.

from cbssports.com:

Lorenzo Taliaferro becomes the fourth Ravens player arrested this offseason.

Ravens rookie running back Lorenzo Taliaferro was arrested over the Memorial Day Weekend and charged with breaking a taxi cab window, according to the Virginia Gazette.

Maj. Greg Riley of the Williamsburg Police Department told the Gazette that officer J.A. Wagner was on patrol early Saturday morning and saw the incident take place.
Wagner observed a group near the College Delly get into a cab. The taxi lurched forward, then the group got out. The officer said he heard yelling and cursing among the group.

The cab driver motioned to Wagner, and told that a member of the group whom he identified as Taliaferro, gripped the window and broke it.

Police report that Taliaferro, the Ravens' 2014 fourth-round pick out of Coastal Carolina, left the scene but was found a block away. He was charged with two misdemeanors: being drunk in public and destruction of property.

It's been a busy offseason for the Ravens, but for all the wrong reasons.

Taliaferro recently signed a four-year, $2.52 million rookie deal that includes a $300,584 signing bonus.

Memphis Grizzlies James Johnson arrested for Domestic Battery.

from cbssports.com:

James Johnson has a court date Monday morning.

Memphis Grizzlies forward James Johnson was arrested late Friday night for domestic assault causing bodily harm, via the Shelby County Sheriff's office. He had a "domestic dispute" with his wife leaving Beale Street around 2 a.m., and at their home she called the police saying that he "hit her in the face and choked her," via FOX13 Memphis.
She also told officers the NBA player punched a hole in their bathroom door, which is where she was waiting while holding their child. Officers say the victim gave the baby to her mother and Johnson then pushed that woman and took the baby before running away from the scene. Johnson eventually returned and was taken to jail.
Police officers said, via FOX 13 Memphis, that the couple had been drinking at home earlier that night, and that she refused medical treatment and did not have any visible injuries on her face and neck. Johnson has a court date scheduled for early Monday morning.

The Grizzlies released a brief statement on Saturday afternoon:
We are currently gathering information regarding this morning's report involving James Johnson. We have no further comment at this time.

Johnson averaged 7.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 18 minutes per game for Memphis this season. He will be an unrestricted free agent in July.
