A Texas jury sentenced the son of former NBA player Nick Van Exel to 60 years in prison Friday in the shooting death of a longtime friend.

Nickey Maxwell Van Exel, 22, received the punishment after his father wept on the witness stand and apologized to the family of the victim, Bradley Bassey Eyo. The same jury in Dallas County in North Texas found the younger Van Exel guilty of murder on Thursday.

Prosecutors had sought a capital murder conviction.

Nickey Van Exel fatally shot Eyo in December 2010 and dumped his body at Lake Ray Hubbard on the eastern outskirts of Dallas. His attorney had said the two were playing with a shotgun at Nickey Van Exel's Garland home and that Van Exel didn't know the gun was loaded.

Nick Van Excel, who played 13 seasons in the NBA including a stint with the Dallas Mavericks and is now a player development instructor for the Atlanta Hawks, testified about the happy times he and his son spent together, including with Eyo.

He recalled the time that he took his son and Eyo to a 2006 NBA Finals game in Miami between the Heat and the Mavericks.

"And they were about the only guys there cheering for the Dallas Mavericks," he said. "It's dangerous when you go to an arena cheering for the other team."

The elder Van Exel broke down at one point while speaking in court. He then apologized to Eyo's family.

"I'm really sorry to the Eyo family. Nobody should have to go through something like this. Nobody," he said, as he looked at Eyo's family members who were in the courtroom.

Not that surprising to see him shooting, because if he's anything like his dad, he damn sure wasn't passing.

Pretty sure Pops Van Exel was suspended for attacking a ref after a call went against him

Turns out I recall correctly:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7Er_-XZW4E

Police: Former Dolphins receiver Mark Duper beat son unconscious
6:48p.m. EDT March 21, 2013

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Mark Duper is facing charges he beat up his 17-year-old son during a series of fights at their Jacksonville home.

Jacksonville police say the 54-year-old Duper, following his arrest Wednesday, spent the night in jail before posting a $5,000 bail and being released Thursday afternoon.

Police say Duper attacked his son, Marcus, three times Wednesday night, twice knocking him out.

Former Dolphins defensive end Hugh Green said he witnessed the brawls and that Marcus Duper started the fight and his father acted in self-defense.

Duper caught 511 passes for 8,869 yards and 59 touchdowns in his 11-year career with Miami.

Rams corner Trumaine Johnson arrested for DUI
Posted by Josh Alper on March 22, 2013, 2:29 PM EDT

Rams cornerback Trumaine Johnson didn’t have to pay any price for sleeping through his first practice of training camp, but he might not be as lucky after getting arrested on Friday morning.

Johnson was arrested in Missoula, Montana early on Friday morning on a misdemeanor DUI charge, according to KPAX in Missoula. Johnson was booked into the Missoula county jail at 3:05 a.m. and released after posting a $700 bond about an hour later.

Johnson, a third-round pick last April, played in all 16 games and started three as a rookie. He had 31 tackles and a pair of interceptions, ending the year as the team’s nickel back behind starters Janoris Jenkins and Cortland Finnegan.

Jenkins’ red flags got more attention after the draft and when he was benched by coach Jeff Fisher for a game last season, but Johnson also came into the league with some baggage. He was arrested, tased and charged with obstructing a police officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest during his time at Montana during a post-game incident in which alcohol was involved.

Former NBA player Javaris Crittenton indicted for murder

Kurt Helin

Apr 2, 2013, 5:53 PM EDT

Back in August 2011 former NBA player Javaris Crittenton — you remember him, the other guy from the Gilbert Arenas gun incident — was arrested for his ties to a drive-by shooting that killed a mother of four in Atlanta. He was released on bond but the case had yet to go to trial. (In the mean time, Crittenton was arrested on domestic abuse charges.)

Now Crittenton has been indicted on murder charges, according to a tweet from WSB television in Atlanta (hat tip to Robert Littal of BlackSportsOnline).

"BREAKING: Former NBA player Javaris Crittenton has been indicted on murder charges. @TVRyanYoung will have the latest on Ch. 2 at 5."

Yovani Gallardo arrested for DUI
Craig Calcaterra Apr 16, 2013, 11:00 AM EDT

Brewers’ right-hander/stupid, careless person Yovani Gallardo was arrested for DUI last night, reports Drew Olson of ESPN Wisconsin:

Gallardo, a 27-year-old right-hander, was driving westbound on Interstate 94 near Miller Park when he was pulled over at 2:10 a.m. for driving slowly and deviating lanes. McLaughlin said Gallardo failed a field sobriety test and later registered a blood-alcohol level of .22, nearly three times the legal limit in Wisconsin (.08).

Three times. No excuse.

And sadly, Gallardo will receive more derision and, potentially, more advere consequences due to his 6.61 ERA than he ever will for his .22 BAC.

William Moore arrested for battery

Posted by Mike Florio on April 18, 2013, 9:58 PM EDT

A relatively quiet offseason for the NFL’s legal docket had a blip on the radar screen Thursday.

According to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Falcons safety William Moore has been arrested for simple battery.

“We are aware of the situation involving William Moore and are in the process of gathering more information,” a Falcons spokesperson told Ledbetter. “Because this is now a legal matter, the club will have no further comment at this time.”

Moore signed a five-year, $30 million deal last month to remain in Atlanta. He’ll now be spending some of that money on a person who has “Esq.” in his or her title.

Sportscaster Al Michaels arrested charged with DUI

From USA Today,

Legendary broadcaster Al Michaels, who has delivered some of the most memorable calls in recent sports history, was arrested Friday night and spent five hours in Santa Monica (Calif.) City Jail, charged with driving under the influence.

Michaels, play-by-play announcer for NBC's Sunday Night Football, went through a DUI/driver's license checkpoint that had been set up by the Santa Monica Police Department. According to its website, officers were looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, with penalties ranging from jail time, license suspension, DUI classes and fines.

According to the Daily News of Los Angeles, Michaels was stopped Friday at about 10 p.m. PT, and, by various media outlets, including CNN, was said to be extremely cooperative with police.

Santa Monica police Sgt. William Heric told the Daily News that Michaels was "evaluated for suspicion of DUI" and that a breathalyzer test came out at .08, right at the legal limit.

"So he was released on a citation at about 3 or 4 in the morning," Heric told the Daily News.

Michaels, 68, is scheduled for a June 26 appearance at Los Angeles Municipal Court.

Greg Hughes, a spokesman for NBC Sports, told the Associated Press that the company "is aware of the situation" and has been in contact with Michaels. Hughes had no further comment.

According to Lt. Jay Trisler in a release on the Santa Monica Police Department web site: "All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. Over the course of the past year, traffic collisions involving impaired drivers/riders were involved in 91 collisions; which have killed 3 and injured 28 people."

New Raven Rolando McClain arrested for disorderly conduct

Posted by Michael David Smith on April 22, 2013, 6:00 AM EDT

Rolando McClain’s career with the Raiders fell apart in large part because of his inability to stay out of trouble off the field. Now his time with the Ravens is off to a bad start.

McClain, the linebacker who signed with the Ravens this month after being cut by the Raiders, was arrested on Sunday night in his hometown of Decatur, Alabama.

WHNT reports that McClain was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after an incident at a local park. Witnesses said they saw McClain cursing at police officers before he was handcuffed and taken away.

McClain’s previous arrests have included everything from assault to driving with windows that were tinted too darkly.

The 23-year-old McClain was the No. 8 overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft and was the Raiders’ starting middle linebacker for most of his three seasons in Oakland. But his talent may not be enough to outweigh his off-field troubles, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Ravens cut him.

Quentin Groves arrested for solicitation

Posted by Josh Alper on April 24, 2013, 11:54 AM EDT

It didn’t take Browns linebacker Quentin Groves long to get in trouble in his new town.

Groves, who signed with the Browns as a free agent earlier this offseason, was arrested for solicitation. According to a report in Cleveland Scene magazine that has been confirmed by Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Groves was arrested at a hotel after responding to an ad from a prostitute promising “full service” that turned out to be a sting run by police in the towns of Beechwood and Orange along with the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department.

Groves allegedly agreed to a price for sex acts on a call before arriving at the hotel — one hour of time for $100 with an additional $20 for a particular sex act – and became one of 14 men arrested as part of the operation. The report also states that $195.70 and a box of Magnum condoms were seized as evidence in the arrest, which took place while the Browns were holding a minicamp last week. Groves was not absent for any of that minicamp.

Groves, who signed a two-year deal with the Browns, is due in court on May 10. Neither the Browns nor Groves’ agent responded to requests for comment.

Yankees prospect Mason Williams charged with DUI
Aaron Gleeman Apr 25, 2013, 11:51 AM EDT

Yankees outfield prospect Mason Williams was arrested early this morning and charged with a DUI, according to Andy McCullough of the Newark Star Ledger.

Williams was the Yankees’ fourth-round pick in 2010 and has emerged as an excellent prospect, with both Baseball America and MLB.com ranking him among their top 50 overall heading into this season. He’s currently playing at high Single-A as a 21-year-old.

McCullough reports that police stopped Williams for speeding and weaving in traffic, at which point he failed a field sobriety test even though his blood-alcohol level was slightly below the legal limit.

Dodgers prospect Yasiel Puig arrested in Tennessee
Bill Baer Apr 28, 2013, 6:05 PM EDT

Kevin Baxter of the L.A. Times has the details:

"Dodgers prospect Yasiel Puig was arrested by police in Chattanooga, Tenn., early Sunday and charged with speeding, reckless driving and driving without proof of insurance.

A spokesman for the Hamilton County jail confirmed that Puig was booked Sunday morning and released a short time later. He has a hearing scheduled for the afternoon of May 14 in Hamilton County court."

Puig, rated the #47 overall prospect by Baseball America going into the season, was hitting .333 with a 1.010 OPS in 52 plate appearances with Double-A Chattanooga. The Dodgers signed the 22-year-old Cuban on June 27 last year on a seven-year, $42 million contract. Puig seemed to be on the fast track to the Majors. His arrest this morning is his first bump in the road.

A former NBA All-Star is accused of squatting in a home in Arizona and then trying to make money from it. Chris Gatling played for eight NBA teams during his 11-year NBA career. Stability wasn’t a reality for him while in the NBA. Apparently that is still the case as the former professional basketball player has been charged with various criminal offenses, which include theft, forgery and identity theft.

According to a police report, Gatling moved into a Paradise Valley home without the owner’s permission by breaking into a key box. He lived in the home from July 2010 to August 2011. The power was on and it was furnished, but the owner of the home lives in California. Not content with just hanging out in someone’s home, Gatling then decided he wanted to rent out the house he was squatting in. So naturally he put an ad on Craigslist.

The ad said: "800-dollars — 4 bedroom Ex-NBA — Paradise Valley Home for rent with pool and utilities included."
