Facing sentencing for tax evasion, Zorich has negative net worth
Posted by Mike Florio on July 4, 2013, 12:13 AM EDT

Former NFL defensive tackle Chris Zorich faces a July 12 sentencing on failing to file tax returns from 2006 through 2009.  Regardless of his jail time, Zorich has significant financial issues.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Zorich’s lawyer says the player’s obligation to repay $348,447 to his charity and $90,000 in back taxes and penalties exceeds his current net worth of $302,273.

“Chris Zorich’s true financial condition is that he faces heavy financial obligations, and he will be struggling to meet them for some time,” attorney Matt Lydon told a federal court in Illinois.

Zorich faces up to 16 months in prison, but there’s a chance he’ll get probation.

He already has paid more than $58,000 in back taxes.  Payments to the charity were suspended in April once Zorich’s cash flow went negative.

Zorich, 44, was a second-round draft pick of the Bears in 1991.  He played in Chicago from ’91 through 1996, finishing his career in 1997 with the Redskins.

Giants’ Dan Connor arrested with knife at airport
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 6, 2013, 9:13 PM EDT

Giants linebacker Dan Connor has reportedly been arrested for carrying a switchblade knife at Philadelphia International Airport.

Philadelphia TV station WPVI reports that Connor, who grew up in the Philadelphia area, was arrested at 9 a.m. on Saturday when TSA agents spotted the knife and called police.

According to NBCPhiladelphia.com, Connor was charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

The 27-year-old Connor signed with the Giants in March. He played last season with the Cowboys after playing his first four NFL seasons with the Panthers, who took him out of Penn State in the third round of the 2008 NFL draft.

Broncos exec arrested for DUI, crashing into police car
Posted by Darin Gantt on July 8, 2013, 4:17 PM EDT

This is the time of year NFL front offices worry the most about players.

But those front offices aren’t exempt from the concern, either.

According to CBS4 in Denver, Broncos director of player personnel Matt Russell was arrested and jailed over the weekend on charges including DUI and crashing into a police car.

According to the report, Russell was involved in an accident in the town of Frisco, and then crashed into a police car in the nearby town of Breckenridge. An officer who was in the car was hospitalized with what was described as minor injuries.

“Any time anybody is impaired and hits a fully-marked police car that person should not have been driving in the first place,” said Colorado State Trooper Nate Reid. “It’s a dangerous profession.”

Russell was charged with driving under the influence, careless driving resulting in injury, having an open container of alcohol in his car, and failure to display proof of insurance.

Russell was released on a $1,000 bond Sunday.

The former linebacker was viewed as John Elway’s heir apparent on the personnel side of the organization, and they even blocked the Chargers from interviewing him for their General Manager position this offseason.

Authorities say Giants pitcher Chad Gaudin has been charged with lewdness after a woman told police he touched her breast at a Las Vegas hospital while she was on a gurney earlier this year.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports 30-year-old Chad Gaudin was arrested Jan. 27, although the case didn't attract attention at the time.

Police say Gaudin was drunk when he approached a 23-year-old woman on a gurney in the emergency room lobby at Desert Springs Hospital, told her she was gorgeous and touched her face and breast.
The newspaper reports a paramedic told Gaudin to leave the woman alone, but he refused, and security staff held him down until police arrived.

Gaudin has pitched as a starter and in relief. He's 2-1 this year with a 2.44 ERA.

Team officials didn't immediately return a call seeing comment Wednesday.

Raiders’ Maiava charged with assault
Posted by Darin Gantt on July 10, 2013, 4:13 PM EDT

And we have another delayed report of an AFC West arrest, but this one doesn’t involve the Broncos’ front office.

According to the Associated Press, Raiders linebacker Kaluka Maiava and his brother were charged with assaulting two men at a bar in Hawaii in March.

They were charged with misdemeanor assault and criminal property damage for the incident on March 17, allegedly causing bodily harm during a bar fight. That was four days after the Raiders signed him to a three-year, $6 million deal.

The Maiava brothers (nephews of wrestling star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) were served with a summons on July 2, when local prosecutors learned they’d be back on the island. They’ll be arraigned July 25.

Patriots’ Alfonzo Dennard arrested on suspicion of DUI
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 11, 2013, 8:03 AM EDT

Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard has been arrested again.

Dennard, who was sentenced to 30 days in jail three months ago after he was convicted of assaulting a police officer, was arrested early this morning on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The Omaha World-Herald reports that Dennard was pulled over in Lincoln, Nebraska around 2 a.m. after he was spotted by officers straddling a lane line. He reportedly refused to take a blood-alcohol test.

In addition to his 30-day jail sentence, Dennard was given two years of probation for assaulting a police officer, and this arrest could be considered a probation violation. The judge in his assault case said she would allow Dennard to wait until after the 2013 NFL season to serve his 30-day sentence; it is not clear whether this arrest will make the judge reconsider that.

Dennard could also face NFL discipline, and it’s possible that the league will consider him a repeat violator of the personal-conduct policy, even though the assault on the police officer happened before he was drafted by the Patriots.

Scottie Pippen Sued For $4M Over Malibu Fight
July 12, 2013 9:04 AM

MALIBU, Calif. (AP) — Former Chicago Bulls star Scottie Pippen is being sued over a fight last month at an upscale Southern California restaurant that left an autograph-seeker hospitalized with a head injury.

The $4 million lawsuit filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court says 49-year-old plaintiff Camran Shafighi simply asked Pippen for a photograph for his girlfriend’s 12-year-old son.

Instead, the suit says, Shafighi got a “brutal and unjustified physical attack” that included spit in the face, a shove, and a punch that sent Shafighi to the ground.

“At no time did or could Mr. Shafighi physically provoke or fight back, as he was knocked unconscious with the first blow,” the lawsuit says.

Sheriff’s officials, who were still investigating the incident, said Pippen voluntarily came into a station to be questioned and was cooperative. He was not arrested and no charges have been filed.

Investigators at the time said that Pippen had been dining June 23 with his family at Nobu, a restaurant on the beach in Malibu frequented by celebrities.

Shafighi was taking pictures of Pippen inside the restaurant then outside in the parking lot, investigators said.

Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said several witnesses described Shafighi as intoxicated.

An argument ensued that led to violence, investigators said. Shafighi was taken to a hospital with a head injury, treated and released.

A phone message left after business hours for Pippen’s attorney Mark Geragos was not immediately returned.

The 47-year-old Pippen won six NBA titles with Michael Jordan and the Bulls, and in 1996, was named one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.

Pippen now serves as special adviser to the Bulls’ president and chief operating officer.

Facing sentencing for tax evasion, Zorich has negative net worth

Chris Zorich sentenced to 3 years probation
Updated at 02:57 PM today

Sun-Times Media Wire

July 12, 2013 (CHICAGO) -- Former Chicago Bears star Chris Zorich dodged a potential prison term Friday when a federal judge sentenced him instead to 36 months of probation for failing to file his federal income taxes.

The 44-year-old former defensive tackle -- who was an All-American and national champion in his college days at Notre Dame -- had pleaded guilty in March to failing to file taxes on income of $1 million between 2006 and 2009, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.

He faced the possibility of as much as 16 months in prison for the misdemeanor, but his lawyers successfully argued that U.S. Magistrate Judge Daniel Martin should give him probation. They said Zorich has agreed to pay back the $71,000 he owes the IRS, that he is broke and that "his good works and helping nature are well-known and have been lifelong."

Even during his professional playing career with the Bears from 1991 to 1996 and the Washington Redskins in 1997, Zorich was known for his charity work.

But it was problems with his charity, The Chris Zorich Foundation, that lead to his disgrace after his life began to unravel in 2002.

After he went through a divorce and failed the bar exam, his cousin, Barbara Singer, who had managed Zorich's foundation, died after a long bout with cervical cancer.

The charity -- which helped the needy, providing turkeys to the poor at Thanksgiving, awarding Notre Dame scholarships and delivering flowers and gifts to mothers living in homeless shelters on Mother's Day -- failed to submit an annual report that year, and the state canceled the foundation's registration two years later.

Even so, the foundation continued to receive donations, But Zorich failed to report income he took from it, as well as money he got from the Bears, the University of Notre Dame -- where he worked in the athletic department from 2008 to 2010 -- and from a Chicago law firm.

The Rev. Michael Pfleger -- who has Zorich working for his church's school, St. Sabina Academy on the South Side, as athletic director -- was among those who urged the judge to to give the former football star a lenient sentence, saying in a letter that Zorich had "a heart of gold."

Elway: Arrests are unacceptable and inexcusable
Posted by Josh Alper on July 15, 2013, 3:15 PM EDT

The Broncos have handed down suspensions for player personnel director Matt Russell and pro personnel director Tom Heckert and it appears that will be the only job-related discipline they’ll face for their DUI arrests.

In their release about the suspensions, the Broncos said that the league told them that they did not plan any further discipline for the two executives. The Broncos suspended Russell indefinitely without pay and Heckert for one month without pay on Monday and executive vice president of football operations John Elway said that Heckert and Russell failed in one of their responsibilities to the team.

“When I was named to this position two years ago, I spoke of the role this organization has in the community,” Elway said in the release. “We all have an individual responsibility to represent this team in the appropriate manner at all times. It’s particularly disappointing that two members of my staff acted so irresponsibly. Simply put, it’s unacceptable and inexcusable.”

Albert Breer of the NFL Network reports that the lack of further league discipline does not mean the Broncos will avoid punishment under the league’s salary remittance policy. The policy punishes teams for repeated violations of the same type by members of the organization and, per Breer, any fines due from the Broncos as a result of the DUI arrests — a group that also includes offensive lineman Quentin Saulsberry — would be levied after the 2013 season.

Diamondbacks’ Spanish-language announcer accused of assault, threatening to kill wife

Aaron Gleeman

Jul 18, 2013, 11:15 AM EDT

Miguel Perez Quintana, who’s the play-by-play announcer for the Diamondbacks’ Spanish-language broadcast, was arrested yesterday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, intimidation, and criminal damage.

According to police Quintana is accused of “holding a kitchen knife to his wife’s throat and threatening to kill her” and Cecilia Chan of the Arizona Republic reports that the alleged incident occurred when Quintana’s wife found him “in the kitchen looking through her cell phone.”

The couple’s son told police that “he saw his mother on her back on the kitchen floor and his father on top of her holding a large kitchen knife.”

Quintana, who’s in his 16th season with the Diamondbacks, has been suspended.

Larry Johnson pleads no contest to domestic violence
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 23, 2013, 4:00 PM EDT

Former NFL running back Larry Johnson pleaded no contest today to two misdemeanor charges stemming from an accusation that he beat and choked his ex-girlfriend.

Johnson appeared in Las Vegas Justice Court and was adjudicated guilty of one count each of battery-domestic violence and assault, both misdemeanors, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports. Johnson’s no contest plea was part of a deal in which a felony charge was dropped.

Johnson will be on probation for one year, perform 48 hours of community service, undergo mandatory counseling and pay a $345 fine. Johnson, who has a history of allegations of violence against women, vowed after his court appearance to obey the terms of his probation.

“I’m just happy to have this behind me and go back to Florida and stay out of trouble for once,” he said.

A 2003 first-round pick of the Chiefs, Johnson was one of the best running backs in football in 2005 and 2006, topping 1,700 yards in both seasons. But injuries, run-ins with coaches and off-field trouble derailed his career, and he was ineffective as he bounced around from the Chiefs to the Bengals to the Redskins to the Dolphins before his career came to an end in 2011.

Erik Ainge arrested for DUI
Posted by Mike Florio on July 29, 2013, 8:47 AM EDT

When we last heard from former Jets quarterback Eric Ainge, he was calling former teammate Mark Sanchez dumb.

Sanchez can now return the favor.

Ainge, via the Associated Press, was arrested Sunday for DUI. The fifth-round pick in the 2008 draft retired after three seasons. He spent two years on the roster with Sanchez.

The former University of Tennessee starter was released on bond. He’ll appear in court on Monday.

NBA player in trouble for kicking homeless man.

from sports.yahoo.com:

Houston Rockets forward Terrence Jones had a rather nondescript rookie season, but after a solid showing in the NBA Summer Leagues in Orlando earlier in July, he and his young Rockets team were probably hoping to make waves heading into a crucial 2013-14 campaign. Allegedly, Jones is off to a very poor start in terms of breaking into the public’s consciousness.

KATU is reporting that Jones was arrested after allegedly stomping on the leg of a homeless man after leaving a bar in Portland on Wednesday morning. Jones, who is a Portland native, was reported to have been observed by a police sergeant in the wee hours as shouting down the homeless man before kicking the victim’s leg. From the station’s website:

While watching the group walk away from the bar, the sergeant observed a man, later identified as Jones, walk by a doorway where two homeless men were sleeping, according to police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson.

The sergeant said Jones yelled, “Wake up,” then raised his leg and stomped down on one of the man’s legs. The men were sleeping in the doorway of 114 Northwest 3rd Avenue.

The victim, 46-year-old Daniel John Kellerher, received a minor leg injury and did not require immediate medical attention, Simpson said.

The time and setting all point to the 21-year old Jones allegedly doing something very stupid after imbibing too much, but if the sergeant’s report is accurate this sort of act flies way past the bounds of committing a bonehead act after drinking quite a bit, and into the bounds of needless assault on a helpless victim.

Jones, who spent most of his rookie year working in the D-League before leading the Rockets’ Summer League team with a 15.8 points per game average, is due in court to face harassment charges next Tuesday afternoon.

A Rockets spokesman had no comment as of Wednesday afternoon.
