Former Titan Jamie Harper arrested
Posted by Josh Alper on July 31, 2013, 4:53 PM EDT

We haven’t heard much of anything about running back Jamie Harper since he was released by the Titans in May and it turns out that no news was better than the news that broke the dry spell.

Harper was arrested in Franklin, Tennessee last Saturday after a fight with his girlfriend. WKRN-TV reports that Harper was charged with domestic assault after an incident at a hotel.

Harper’s girlfriend called the police to report that she had been injured in a physical argument and then called them again two hours later when Harper returned to the hotel room and banged on the door “so hard the walls of the room were shaking.” Police responded after Harper left, but found him a short time later and their report says he told them he’d been in a fight with his girlfriend and “pushed” his way past her.

A fourth-round pick in 2011, Harper had 64 yards on 36 rushes for the Titans over the last two seasons. He hasn’t generated much interest from other teams and his current legal troubles could help ensure things remain that way.

Former NBA player Craig Ehlo arrested on domestic violence charge

Kurt Helin

Aug 1, 2013, 4:05 PM EDT

You remember Craig Ehlo as the Cavalier player Michael Jordan nailed “The Shot” over in the 1989 NBA playoffs.

Ehlo’s got more serious issues in his life than that now — he has been arrested in Washington on a domestic violence charge. The Spokesman-Review out of Spokane, Wash., has the story.

Spokane County sheriff’s deputies arrested Ehlo, 51, on charges of first-degree reckless burning, domestic violence, according to the sheriff’s office. He was booked into Spokane county jail at 7:36 a.m. The charge is a Class C felony.

Ehlo had been the coach at Eastern Washington University but resigned in July. The Washington State alum lived in the area and had also done some television color commentating for the Sonics when Seattle had a team, and for Gonzaga broadcasts.

Ehlo had a 14-year NBA career where he was a solid swingman. He shot 36.9 percent from three for his career and averaged 8.6 points a game.

Cardinals cheerleader arrested after fight with boyfriend
Posted by Mike Florio on August 3, 2013, 12:44 PM EDT

The “days without an arrest” meter had been creeping toward the all-time record of 34.  And with players in camp, the likelihood of an off-field incident was reduced.

But every NFL employee falls under the umbrella, including cheerleaders.  According to WPTV.com, a Cardinals cheerleader was arrested last month for assaulting her boyfriend.

The victim had recorded the incident via his phone, and Megan Elizabeth Welter admitted that she did indeed hit and punch him.

She was arrested on July 20 for assault, disorderly conduct, and criminal damage.

Welter recently was the subject of news reports regarding her military service in Iraq.  Which likely resulted in someone connecting the dots and noticing that the same Megan Elizabeth Welter who gained publicity for chasing a 16-month tour of duty with an NFL cheerleading gig also had a somewhat more notorious moment roughly two weeks ago.

Chartric Darby arrested on domestic violence charges
Posted by Mike Florio on August 5, 2013, 12:02 AM EDT

The same day that former Buccaneers defensive tackle Warren Sapp officially entered the Hall of Fame, the man who lined up next to him in the biggest game of their careers was arrested.

Via the Associated Press, Chartric Darby was arrested Saturday for domestic battery. Darby’s wife told police Darby pushed her in the chest during an argument.

A nine-year NFL veteran, Darby started Super Bowl XXXVII for the Bucs at defensive tackle. He played four seasons in Tampa, three with the Seahawks, and two with the Lions.

Darby also started in Super Bowl XL, a Seattle loss to the Steelers.

Report: Jets RB Joe McKnight arrested for unpaid fines
Posted by Curtis Crabtree on August 6, 2013, 12:45 AM EDT

For the second time this year a New York Jets running back has been arrested.

According to Brian Costello of the New York Post, Joe McKnight was pulled over after passing a police officer at a high rate of speed and changing lanes without signaling during a Jets off-day on July 30.

When the officer ran the license plate, he discovered a pair of fines that had gone unpaid by McKnight. The first was for $200 for failing to produce an insurance card in Summit and the second was $120 for failing to observe a traffic signal in Springfield. He was subsequently arrested and paid the outstanding charges of $320 and was released with a summons for an unsafe lane change and uninsured motor vehicle.

McKnight joins Mike Goodson as Jets running backs to be handcuffed this year. Goodson was arrested in May on marijuana and handgun charges.

McKnight did not practice for the Jets Monday after apparently suffering a concussion.

Former NBA All-Star Gatling pleads guilty to theft charges in house squatting situation

Kurt Helin

Aug 6, 2013, 2:10 AM EDT

Chris Gatling, who had an 11-year NBA career and was an All-Star in 1997, has plead guilty to charges of fraud and theft in relation to a house squatting situation in Arizona.

The Associated Press has the details.

Chris Gatling entered the guilty pleas to one count of theft and one count of forgery on Thursday in Maricopa County Superior Court….

Gatling was accused of breaking in the key box at the home and living there for about a year. Police say the homeowners lived in California but had left the power on at the Arizona home.

In previous reports Gatling got caught when he had pretended to rent the home out, getting a down payment from one potential renter, but another called the police.

Gatling was the No. 16 pick by Golden State in 1991 and over the course of his career earned $29.4 million in NBA salary, plus he played a couple seasons overseas. He played for the Warriors, Heat, Mavericks, Nets, Bucks, Magic, Nuggets and Cavaliers.

He was known for his energy. He was the only NBA player I can think of with a steel plate in his head, needed after a fall left him in a blood clot in his head that required surgery.

Gatling will be sentenced Oct. 4.

Michael Beasley arrested on possession of marijuana charges

Scott Schroeder

Aug 6, 2013, 2:18 PM EDT

Michael Beasley once told David Kahn that his days of smoking marijuana were in the past. They were apparently in the future too, though, because the Phoenix Suns forward was arrested early Tuesday morning after a Scottsdale police officer smelled marijuana after stopping the former No. 2 pick for a traffic violation.

Beasley has had his fair share of public issues with the drug, but he’s pretty much been able to stay out of trouble — and out of the limelight — over the past few seasons (save for when he got his car impounded after speeding). That doesn’t make Tuesday’s news anymore surprising, though, and will likely lead to further scrutiny for the former Kansas State product.

An abundance of details aren’t necessary when it comes to this sort of case, but the Scottsdale Police Department decided to post them on their website anyway with a headline titled “High Profile Arrest.”

On 08/06/13 at 1:15 am SPD made a stop for a traffic violation in the area of Scottsdale and McCormick Roads. As the officer approached the vehicle he could smell marijuana emanating from within the car. A search of the driver’s area recovered marijuana that was impounded. The driver, identified as Michael Beasley, was booked pending charges for possession of marijuana and released.

It’s unfortunate that a player once considered to have so much potential has continued to struggle with this problem, especially considering he’s no longer as productive as he once was — despite being a five-year pro that’s just slightly older than the college seniors drafted earlier this summer. The 24-year-old averaged a career-low 20 minutes during his first season with the Suns while also putting career-lows in the scoring (10.1), rebounding (3.8) and field-goal percentage (40.5) departments.

Ex-Giants lineman Luke Petitgout pushed wife out of car, threw purse at her: cops
Petitgout, 37, surrendered to police in beating of Jennifer Petitgout in his parked car on Little West 12th St. in Meatpacking District around 5:30 a.m. Friday, cops said.

Former New York Giants lineman Luke Petitgout was arrested Tuesday and accused of using unnecessary roughness on his wife during a spat over alleged infidelity.

Enraged because he thought he was being two-timed, the hulking retired tackle shoved his petite wife out of his parked car early Friday, tossed her purse at her head and drove off, leaving her bruised and battered on a Meatpacking District street, police sources said.

Petitgout, 37, surrendered to cops Tuesday at the NYPD’s 1st Precinct station house in Tribeca, where his wife, Jennifer, had lodged a complaint. Cops initially booked him on a felony assault rap, but prosecutors presented a reduced charge of second-degree aggravated harassment — a misdemeanor — at his arraignment Tuesday night.

Petitgout and his wife of 13 years had spent the night out on the town and were in their car on Little W. 12th St. about 5:30 a.m. Friday when they got into an argument. Things got ugly after Petitgout accused her of cheating on him, a police source said.

As Jennifer Petitgout started to get out of the car, her 6-foot-6, 300-pound husband shoved her out of the door with the brute force he once used to protect Giants quarterbacks, the sources said. She fell onto the cobblestone street, scraping her arms, the sources said.

“He then threw the purse at her and hit her in the head,” a police source said.

Petitgout drove away. His injured wife hailed a cab, destination: the 1st Precinct station house on Ericsson Place. “She had visible abrasions to her head, arms and breasts,” a police source said.

After reporting the incident, Jennifer Petitgout, 36, went to New York Downtown Hospital and had her arms and wrists examined. She was soon released.

At his arraignment Tuesday night in Manhattan Criminal Court, Luke Petitgout was released on his own recognizance.

“He absolutely denies all of the charges. Mr. Petitgout never hurt a soul in his life off the football field,” defense attorney Dennis Ring said. “This case is going to be dismissed. He can go home tonight. His wife is fine.”

Prosecutors asked for a full order of protection, but Jennifer Petitgout refused it.

Ring said after the incident, Petitgout and his wife, who have three children, “spent all of last weekend together.”

Jennifer Petitgout refused to shed light on the lovers’ quarrel when reached earlier Tuesday at the couple’s sprawling home in Woodcliff Lake, N.J.

“Are you kidding me?” she huffed at a Daily News reporter, slamming the door.

Petitgout was the Giants’ 1999 first-round draft pick, out of Notre Dame. He started eight seasons for Big Blue, playing offensive guard before being moved to tackle. He was a member of the Giants’ 2001 squad that got beat up in the Super Bowl, losing to the Baltimore Ravens, 34-7.

The Giants cut him loose in 2006. He was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but his stint in South Florida ended with a knee injury four games into the 2007 season.

He retired from pro football after he was suspended by the NFL in August 2008 for a steroids violation and the Buccaneers cut him.

After hanging up his cleats, Petitgout became a spokesman for EnergetixMD, a human growth hormone treatment.

“I’ve had multiple concussions, repeated trauma to my head because of my sport. That definitely could be an indicator of why I’ve suffered some depression,” he said in a 2011 video testimonial for EnergetixMD.

Joey Porter turns self in on 14-year old arrest warrant from college
Posted by Curtis Crabtree on August 7, 2013, 11:07 PM EDT

Former NFL linebacker Joey Porter’s return to Fort Collins, Colo. wasn’t just to finish his degree and join the coaching staff of the Colorado State Rams as an undergraduate student assistant, it was also to square an outstanding arrest warrant from when he was a student at the university in 1999.

According to Matt Stephens of the USA Today, Porter turned himself in Wednesday morning at the Larimer County Jail. Porter was arrested for speeding and driving with a suspended license in May 1999. After three court appearances, Porter failed to appear for his final court date in October and a warrant was issued for his arrest. The warrant remained unheeded ever since despite Porter’s 13-year player career in the NFL.

Fourteen years later, Porter answered the warrant and was booked and released on $1,100 bond.

Since we're now including cheerleaders in this thread......

from deadspin.com:

Dallas, Texas, police are alleging that Erbie "E-Luv" Bowser, a former dancer on the Dallas Mavericks' all-fat-male Maniaacs dance team, went on a killing spree last night, in which he killed four people and injured others using guns and a grenade.

According to the Dallas Observer, the rampage started around 10:30 last night. Bowser walked into his ex-girlfriend's apartment in Dallas and opened fire on four people, killing two and injuring a couple more. He then drove to his ex-wife's house in nearby DeSoto, Texas. Here, he threw a grenade in the house, and when it detonated, entered after it. Bowser shot until he was out of ammo. When he stopped, he'd murdered two and wounded two more.

Police arrived quickly on the scene. WFAA reports that when cops entered the home, Bowser pretended to be one of the victims until authorities realized he didn't have a scratch on him and detained him. That's when the dancer revealed he once served in the Army.

In addition to volunteering with the Mavs Maniaacs, Bowser was also a special education teacher from 2001 to 2010, before resigning.

Former major leaguer Chad Curtis’ criminal sexual conduct trial is underway

Craig Calcaterra

Aug 13, 2013, 8:53 AM EDT

Chad Curtis, whose major league career featured stints with the Angels, Tigers, Dodgers, Indians, Yankees and Rangers — and who has two World Series rings from his time in the Bronx — is on trial in Michigan on multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct arising out of his time as a volunteer weightlifting coach at a high school. The charges came to light last summer.

Curtis is accused of inappropriately touching girls between the ages of 13 and 16. He faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison if convicted at the trial.

Curtis’s career highlight was probably hitting two homers for the Yankees in Game 3 of the 1999 World Series, including a walkoff. He was also know to have alienated multiple teammates over the course of his career, in part because his deeply religious beliefs led him to call out their off-field conduct. It has been reported that this is what led him to be traded away from the Yankees following the 1999 season, as he took issue with Derek Jeter‘s dating habits.

Would that were the worst thing he was ever accused of.

from tsn.ca:

Montreal Canadiens prospect Nathan Beaulieu and his father, former Ontario Hockey League coach Jacques Beaulieu, pleaded guilty to assault charges in London, Ont., on Wednesday.

They were granted conditional discharges with probation and their lawyer confirmed outside court that the sentence will allow Nathan Beaulieu to play hockey.

Strathroy-Caradoc police charged each of them with two counts of assault in late April stemming from an altercation at a house party that followed a charity golf tournament.

Two people suffered minor injuries, police said.

Nathan Beaulieu, 20, was selected 17th overall by the Canadiens in the 2011 NHL draft. He played six regular season games with the Canadiens last season, tallying two assists.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/broncos/2013/08/14/von-miller-arrest-broncos/2656689/

Broncos linebacker Von Miller arrested
Lindsay H. Jones, USA TODAY Sports 6:03 p.m. EDT August 14, 2013

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller isn't just in hot water with the NFL right now.

Miller, scheduled to have his appeal hearing Thursday of a four-game suspension for violating of the NFL's drug, was arrested Sunday on a warrant for failure to appear in court on a traffic citation. Miller posted a $1,000 bond that evening and was released, Arapahoe County undersheriff Dave Walcher told USA TODAY Sports.

The Broncos issued a statement Wednesday in which they said they were aware of Miller's incident.

"It was reported to the league earlier this week, and is being handled through the legal system," the team said.

The arrest warrant was initially filed on Jan. 2 after Miller did not appear in an Arapahoe County Court on Dec. 31, a day after the Broncos' final regular season game of last season. He was initially cited in October for careless driving and no proof on insurance.

The Broncos were off on Sunday, and Miller's arrest did not affect his attendance at training camp.

Though the arrest is unrelated to his NFL drug appeal, the timing is particularly troubling.

The Broncos and Miller have acted confident Miller could win his appeal. A person with knowledge of Miller's situation told USA TODAY Sports last month that Miller's suspension was not the result of a positive test.

Players can be found in violation of the league's drug policy for other reasons once they are in the league's drug program, including missed tests or diluted urine samples.

Miller has not missed a practice since camp opened three weeks ago and has spent every practice working in his spot as the Broncos' starting strongside linebacker.

Miller, 24, was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 draft, and has 30 sacks in his first two seasons.

Former MLB player Chad Curtis found guilty of sexually assaulting teen girls

By John Tunison

HASTINGS, MI -- A Barry County jury spent only a few hours deliberating today before finding Chad Curtis, a former Major League Baseball player, guilty of sexually assaulting three teen girls.

The jury began deliberating about noon today in the case of Curtis, who was charged with six counts of criminal sexual conduct. The counts included charges of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, third-degree criminal sexual conduct and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Curtis, 44, played for the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees in a decade-long career in the major leagues starting in the 1990s.

The maximum penalty for the charges is 15 years in prison.

Curtis was a weight room training and substitute teacher at Lakewood Schools and performed massages on students for purposes of muscle rehabilitation.

However, two 15-year-old students accused him of inappropriately touching their buttocks and a 16-year-old said he touched her private areas and fondled and kissed her breasts.

An incident involving one of the 15-year-old girl's was in April 2012, while the others were earlier.

Charlotte Bobcats assistant coach Bob Beyer was charged with resisting arrest Thursday night following an altercation with bouncers at a bar in Sarasota Springs, New York.

The details, via the Associated Press:

The 51-year-old Beyer was also charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct. All the charges are misdemeanors.

According to a police department press release, Beyer’s acquaintance, Edward Parenteau, allegedly assaulted one of the bouncers and “Beyer and (Ryan) Chartrand attempted to stop officers from arresting Parenteau and they were arrested. Beyer then began fighting with the police and was charged accordingly.”

The Bobcats, who hired Beyer on July 1, released a statement saying that the team would not comment until the legal process has taken its course.

Beyer was an assistant coach with the Orlando Magic for five seasons from 2007-2012, before spending last season as an assistant with the Warriors. The Bobcats’ new head coach, Steve Clifford, similarly served on Stan Van Gundy’s staff in Orlando during those same years.
