Former Bears top pick hit with felony drug charges

By Rosemary Regina Sobol Tribune reporter

1:50 p.m. CDT, August 19, 2013

David Terrell, a former first-round draft pick of the Chicago Bears, is accused of hitting two police officers as he was being arrested on drug charges Friday on the South Side, authorities said.

Police say the officers were responding to a call of people smoking marijuana around 1:30 p.m. Friday when they found Terrell and two others in an apartment in the 3900 block of South Calumet Avenue in the Bronzeville neighborhood.

"In plain view were multiple items including cannabis and equipment to package it and other such narcotics.  That included heat-sealing machines and baggies typically used to package, sell and use narcotics," said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

"As officers were conducting an interview, Terrell struck an officer's hand by reaching over the top of the door and hitting the officer, injuring him," Mirabelli said. Terrell is 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 220 pounds, according to court records.

As he was being placed into custody, Terrell tried to "defeat" the arrest and "in doing so, he caused injury to the hand of a second police officer," Mirabelli said.

Terrell, 35, was charged with manufacture and delivery of cannabis, a felony, and misdemeanor battery, Mirabelli said. The other two people were also arrested. Bail was set at $20,000 for Terrell on Saturday.

Terrell was drafted by the Bears in the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft, arriving from the University of Michigan. He played four seasons with the Bears and one game with the Denver Broncos in 2005, finishing his career with 128 receptions and 9 touchdowns.

Terrell was charged with domestic battery in April of 2012. Police said he grabbed his girlfriend at his 33rd-floor apartment in the 1700 block of South Michigan Avenue during an argument. "I'll throw you off the balcony and say you jumped," he allegedly threatened.

The woman, who was 25 at the time, suffered injuries to her upper arms, chest and neck, authorities said. An order of protection was issued but the domestic battery charge was dismissed in October after the witness did not appear in court, records show.

Bills’ Nigel Bradham charged with marijuana possession
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 19, 2013, 7:25 PM EDT

Bills linebacker Nigel Bradham was charged with marijuana possession after a traffic stop on Saturday in Tonawanda, New York.

The Tonawanda News reports that Bradham was pulled over at 2:01 a.m. for a window tint violation, and the officer who pulled him over smelled marijuana and asked where the drugs were. According to the police report, Bradham initially denied having any drugs, but when the officer asked again, Bradham opened the glove compartment, pulled out a plastic bag and admitted it contained marijuana.

According to the report, the amount of marijuana was too small to arrest and jail Bradham, so he was only issued tickets, one for possession of a small amount of marijuana and one for a window tint violation.

The Bills released the typical statement that teams usually release when players face off-field issues.

“We are still in the process of gathering the facts surrounding this report and will reserve comment until we have completed that process,” the statement said.

A fourth-round pick out of Florida State last year, Bradham had a promising rookie season, playing in all 16 games and starting the last 11. He has also started both preseason games this year.

Report: Ty Lawson facing charges of physical harassment, criminal mischief following arrest on Saturday

Brett Pollakoff

Aug 19, 2013, 10:21 PM EDT

Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson is facing criminal charges of physical harassment and criminal mischief following an arrest on Saturday in Colorado, according to court records.

Lawson appeared in Arapahoe County court on Monday to be arraigned on the charges, and is free on $1,000 bond, according to a report from the Denver Post.

The incident was allegedly one involving domestic violence.

ABC’s station in Denver has some additional details:

The 25-year-old Lawson was arrested by sheriff’s deputies on investigation of harassment that includes either striking, shoving or kicking as well as property damage, court records state. Both charges are misdemeanors. The incident requires a mandatory restraining order.

Lawson also had a Jan. 29, 2013 arrest in Denver for flight to avoid prosecution on a misdemeanor case out of Arapahoe County, court records say.

Lawson, 25, has played four seasons in the NBA, all with the Denver Nuggets. He averaged 16.7 points and 6.9 assists in 34.4 minutes per game, and agreed to a contract extension of four years and $48 million at the beginning of last season.

As is always the case in these situations, it’s important to remember that these are just charges, and Lawson hasn’t been convicted of anything at this time. He had a brief comment on Twitter, after retweeting a local reporter saying that something about this seems a bit off.

20 day old fish RT @VicLombardi: Ty Lawson does not fit the profile. At all. Something fishy here.

    — Ty Lawson (@TyLawson3) August 20, 2013

And if the follow-up report turns out to be true, this will thankfully all be over relatively quickly for Lawson.

Got on pretty good authority this Lawson incident involves nothing but broken cell phones. Those things aren't cheap. #comparetocricket.com

Former Habs coach Tremblay headed to court for DUI charge

Joe Yerdon

Aug 20, 2013, 3:20 PM EDT

Former Canadiens player and head coach Mario Tremblay found himself on the wrong side of the law.

QMI Agency reports (link in French) the 56-year-old was arrested for drunk driving back in January, pleading “not guilty” to the charge on June 18.

From the story, translated:

According to the indictment filed against Tremblay, which QMI Agency obtained a copy, on January 25, “around 10:09 PM, [the accused] illegally operated a motor vehicle – a 2013 Toyota Venza [...] while his ability to operate the vehicle was impaired by the effects of alcohol or a drug.”

He will head back to court on August 28 in Mascouche, a town north of Montreal, to set a date for his court hearing.

Tremblay coached the Habs from 1995-1997, leading them to the playoffs twice but losing in the first round each time. He’s also spent eight years as an assistant under Jacques Lemaire in both Minnesota and New Jersey. He also suited up for the Canadiens for 12 seasons as a player from 1974-1986.

Browns’ Greg Little, Josh Gordon caught driving way too fast
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 21, 2013, 7:32 PM EDT

The Browns have a speed-related concern about receivers Greg Little and Josh Gordon, and it has nothing to do with their 40 times.

After reports surfaced today that both Little and Gordon have been caught driving way, way too fast, the team issued a statement acknowledging that the players need to be told to drive more safely.

“We’re aware of the situation involving the players and their unacceptable driving records,” the statement said. “We take matters such as this very seriously. We’ve spoken to both individuals, and will address the issue with the entire team.”

Now, at this point, you may be asking, “What’s the big deal?” Everyone drives too fast sometimes, right? But the details are alarming. Gordon got pulled over for driving 98 MPH in a 60 MPH zone, and he wasn’t driving anywhere near as fast as his teammate.

According to WOIO Channel 19 News, Little admitted he was driving 127 miles an hour when he lost control on the Jennings Freeway, hit a guardrail, knocked down a light pole and left 40 yards of brake tracks.

Little was lucky that neither he, his passenger nor anyone else on the road was killed. He was also lucky that all he got was a $350 fine.

That was in April, but Little apparently hasn’t learned his lesson: On Monday, Little was stopped for going 81 MPH in a 60 MPH zone. He also had expired plates.

Jay Ratliff’s DWI trial postponed until February
Posted by Josh Alper on August 23, 2013, 9:10 AM EDT

Cowboys defensive tackle Jay Ratliff was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated in January, but his trial on those charges won’t be held until next February.

Ratliff was scheduled for a pretrial hearing on Thursday, but it was postponed until February 20. That pushes it past the end of the 2013 season, obviously, and likely means that Ratliff will be able to avoid league discipline that could take him off the field at any point this season. The trial date could get pushed even further, but Ratliff’s lawyer Tom Pappas said that his client would not agree to a plea bargain.

“I’m fairly certain this is going to trial,” Pappas said, via the Dallas Morning News.

Ratliff crashed his pickup truck into an 18-wheeler in January and his blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit when it was taken via a blood test more than two hours after Ratliff refused to take a Breathalyzer when he was arrested.

With the trial moved, Ratliff can now devote his efforts to getting on the field for the Cowboys. Ratliff remains on the PUP list and hasn’t practiced with his teammates since last season because of injuries, although the Cowboys maintain that he’ll be in the lineup for the season opener.

Bulluck acknowledges “misunderstanding” with cab driver
Posted by Mike Florio on August 25, 2013, 3:43 PM EDT

Former NFL linebacker Keith Bulluck, who currently serves as an on-air analyst for Titans preseason games, has issued a statement in the wake of a felony robbery arrest.

“I was out with friends last night in Nashville and was taking a cab home,” Bulluck said, via the Tennessean. “There was a misunderstanding between me and the cab driver about getting my money back for a service not rendered. At 2 a.m., things could easily get lost in translation, but regardless of who was right or wrong, I regret putting myself in that situation.”

The cab driver claims Bulluck assaulted the driver and stole a $100 bill.

For now, it’s unknown whether the incident will prevent Bulluck from working Thursday night’s preseason finale.

“We are not ready to talk about that, and I think it would be inappropriate to talk about that yet,” WKRN-TV General Manager Stan Knott told the Tennessean.

Coincidentally (or not), the driver claimed in 2007 to have been involved in a similar incident with state Senator Ophelia Ford.   he driver said at the time that Ford grabbed his shirt, tore off a button, and then cursed at him. The driver also was convicted in 1999 of filing a false accident report.

Still, Bulluck’s statement indicates something happened. Chances are we’ll never know precisely what it was.

Keith Bulluck apparently has more free time
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 26, 2013, 5:15 PM EDT

Former Titans linebacker Keith Bulluck was only hours removed from the team’s preseason broadcast when he was arrested Sunday morning.

And as a result, he appears to have been removed from future broadcasts.

According to Jim Wyatt of the Tennesseean, the Titans list former quarterback Kerry Collins, not Bulluck, as the analyst for Thursday’s broadcast in the team’s press release.

The initial report said Bulluck was “very intoxicated” at the time when he allegedly took a $100 bill from a man in a cab. He was charged with class C felony robbery.

And now, a part-time job has apparently been taken from him.

Arrest warrant issued for Titus Young after missed court date
Posted by Curtis Crabtree on August 27, 2013, 10:46 PM EDT

An arrest warrant has been issued by a California judge for former Detroit Lions wide receiver Titus Young after missing yet another court date on burglary changes. It was the fourth court appearance Young has missed since being charged.

According to Gillian Flaccus of the Associated Press, Orange County Superior Court Judge Andre Manssourian issued a $100,000 bench warrant for Young after meeting with his counsel and the district attorney on Tuesday.

Young’s lawyer, Altus Hudson, told the AP he doesn’t expect his client to be arrested as the court knows Young’s location.

Young had pleaded not guilty on four felony and seven misdemeanor after allegedly breaking into a home in San Clemente, Calif. on May 10. The break-in happened during a stretch when Young was arrested three times in less than a week.

Former White Sox executive sentenced to two years for defrauding Dominican players

Craig Calcaterra

Aug 28, 2013, 3:35 PM EDT

You may recall that in May 2008, the White Sox fired senior director of player personnel David Wilder and scouts Jorge L. Oquendo Rivera and  Victor Mateo  after allegations surfaced that they had pocketed money earmarked for player signing bonuses. Specifically, they were accused of illegally defrauding 23 baseball prospects out of $400,000 from December 2004 to February 2008. Wilder was charged with seven counts of mail fraud.

He’s going to jail now:

Former Sox scouting exec David Wilder gets 2 years for kickback scheme.

    — Larry Yellen Fox 32 (@LarryYellen) August 28, 2013

Worth noting that when this stuff first hit the fan back in 2008, it led to a lot of articles talking about the state of player development in the Dominican Republic, the dangers of Buscones exploiting players and all of that. So much of it was used as the launching pad for calls for an international draft in order to “clean up” player development in the Dominican Republic.

Maybe there is some cleaning that needs done. But as of now, Wilder is by far the highest profile guy to fall, and he is no buscone. He’s an MLB guy. So make of that what you will.

Report: New Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer arrested, charged with DUI

Dan Feldman

Aug 29, 2013, 9:04 AM EDT

Mike Budenholzer, hired by the Hawks three months ago, has just made a terrible early impression in Atlanta.

Mike Morris of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

A trooper stopped Budenholzer for having no tail lights, according to the State Patrol. The trooper detected an odor of alcohol, administered a field sobriety test, then placed Budenholzer under arrest.

Budenholzer refused a breath test, a State Patrol spokesman said.

A spokesman for the Atlanta City Jail told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Budenholzer, 44, was charged with DUI and a tail light violation, and was released on $1,524 bond at 3:45 a.m. Thursday.

It’s expected Nets coach Jason Kidd will be suspended two games for his DWI, and Budenholzer will likely receive the same punishment. As he should. There’s no excuse for Budenholzer to endanger others on the road.

Budenholzer came to the Hawks after being an assistant in San Antonio, where Spurs general manager R.C. Buford was arrested for DUI in 2011. I’m not one to rush to assign blame to an organization – Budenholzer’s issues are his issues, and Buford’s issues are his issues – but if you’re the type to judge athletes for being collectively out of control after a couple legal incidents, it’s only fair to examine the Spurs organization and question whether its culture tolerates drinking and driving.

Unfortunately, how this incident fits the narrative of Budenholzer’s tenure with the Hawks will probably be retroactively determined. If he wins, he overcame early personal challenges. If he loses, he just never had it together.

Oklahoma City Thunder player jailed on domestic battery complaints
Oklahoma City Thunder guard DeAndre Liggins has been jailed on complaints of domestic battery in the presence of a minor child, according to Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office records.

Oklahoma City Thunder guard DeAndre Liggins has been jailed on domestic abuse complaints, according to Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office records.

He was taken to the Oklahoma County jail. He is being held on complaints of domestic assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and domestic abuse in the presence of a minor, a jail official said.

Oklahoma City police were called at about 4:40 p.m. to the 2300 block of NW 180th near North Pennsylvania Avenue. An official police incident report is not yet available, Lt. Arthur Gregory said.

"From what I understand it was a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship," Gregory said. "And I don't know who the child was, if it was theirs, her's or his."

Liggins averaged 1.5 points and 1.4 rebounds in 39 games with the Thunder last season, his first in OKC. He is on a non-guaranteed contract for the upcoming season. Training camp begins in late September.

"We are aware of the situation and take this matter seriously," Sam Presti said in an official statement from the team. "We are in the process of gathering more information and have no further comment at this time."

Colts safety John Boyett arrested
Posted by Josh Alper on September 2, 2013, 5:02 PM EDT

Rookie safety John Boyett has not practiced or played for the Colts this summer because he’s been on the non-football injury list as a result of injuries to both knees that limited him to one game in his final year at Oregon and it seems he needs to find a better way to keep himself occupied while waiting to get back on the field.

The Indianapolis Star reports that Boyett, a sixth-round pick in April, was arrested early Monday morning on charges of disorderly conduct, public intoxication and resisting law enforcement after an incident that started when Boyett was refused admission to a bar. According to the police report, Boyett wouldn’t leave the area in front of the bar and was “cussing” at others in the area when an employee asked police to intervene. Boyett then allegedly tried to run when police attempted to arrest him, throwing a “stiff arm” at an officer in the process, before he was finally corralled by four officers.

“Mr. Boyett had an odor of an alcoholic beverage about his person, his speech was slurred, his eyes were red and glassy, and he had a very abusive behavior toward everyone,” according to the police report.

Boyett allegedly told the arresting officers that they couldn’t arrest him because he was on the Colts and told one officer that he would “come back and break your jaw” while making fun of the hair and nose of another officer.

Colts release Boyett after arrest
Posted by Darin Gantt on September 3, 2013, 8:29 AM EDT

The next time John Boyett gets arrested, he’s going to have to use a new line on the cops.

The Colts announced this morning they had waived the rookie safety from the reserve/non-football injury list.

They were stashing him there for the season, after drafting him in the sixth round despite knee injuries that limited him to one game last year at Oregon.

But that was before he was arrested early Monday morning on charges of disorderly conduct, public intoxication and resisting law enforcement.

According to the report, Boyett told cops: “You can’t arrest me, I’m a Colts player.”

Now, apparently, they are free to.

from espn.go.com:

Boston Celtics forward Jared Sullinger was arrested on domestic violence-related charges over the weekend, according to the Waltham Police Department.

Prosecutors said Sullinger was arrested following a domestic situation. It was not immediately clear who his lawyer is.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening, and Sullinger turned himself in Tuesday morning shortly after 6 a.m. ET, according to Waltham police. Sullinger is charged with assault and battery, malicious destruction of property and witness intimidation.

According to media reports, Sullinger appeared in Waltham District Court on Tuesday and entered a plea of not guilty. He was released on $5,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on Sept. 19.

The Celtics selected Sullinger with the 21st pick in the 2012 draft. He vaulted into the starting lineup early in his rookie season before a back injury forced him to undergo surgery in early February, ending his season.

Sullinger has spent much of his summer rehabbing in Boston and is projected to be a key contributor on this season's team.
