KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Royals claimed off waivers right-hander Guillermo Moscoso from the Rockies and catcher Brett Hayes from the Marlins during a series of moves Friday.

Kansas City also lost right-hander Blake Wood to a claim by the Cleveland Indians.

Moscoso was 3-2 with a 6.12 ERA for Colorado, but was 8-10 with a 3.38 ERA while starting 21 of 23 games two years ago in Oakland. Hayes hit .202 in 39 games for Miami last season.

In other news, left-hander Danny Duffy and right-hander Felipe Paulino, a pair of starters who underwent Tommy John surgery this season, were reinstated from the 60-day disabled list.

Catcher Manny Pina was assigned outright to Triple-A Omaha, while left-hander Tommy Hottovy, right-hander Jeremy Jeffress and outfielder Jason Bourgeois were designated for assignment.

First baseman Aubrey Huff has received a $2 million buyout from the San Francisco Giants after the club declined the team option on his $10 million contract for 2013.

Huff, 35, was limited by injuries this season and hit .192 with one home run and seven RBI in 52 games. He went 1 for 9 in the Giants' postseason run to the World Series championship.

Huff had signed a two-year, $22 million deal with the option for 2013 after the Giants won the World Series in 2010, but his production has fallen and Brandon Belt has taken over the first-base job.

After years of waiting for Ervin Santana to become a more consistent starter, or a pitcher whose results would line up more regularly with his stuff, the Angels on Wednesday traded the right-hander to the Royals.

Up against a deadline to exercise a $13 million option for 2013 on Santana, nearing a similar decision on Dan Haren's $15.5 million option, and wishing to conserve resources to make a run at free-agent right-hander Zack Greinke, the Angels had been in negotiations with the Royals for at least a week. In the agreement, the Angels picked up Santana's option, then traded the pitcher to the Royals for left-hander Brandon Sisk, a 27-year-old minor-league reliever. The Angels will cover part of Santana's contract for '13.

Good trade Theo. Now if he can find some team to take Alfonso Soriano, I'll be happy.

Cubs-Angels talk doesn't produce deal

By Carrie Muskat / MLB.com | 11/02/12 11:00 PM ET

CHICAGO -- Carlos Marmol is staying put.

There were reports Friday, including comments by Marmol himself, that the Cubs had dealt the closer to the Angels in exchange for pitcher Dan Haren. Marmol told a news outlet in the Dominican Republic about the deal.

"I like Anaheim," Marmol told El Caribe. "They have talent, and they'll give me an opportunity. I'm grateful to Chicago."

However, a Cubs source confirmed to MLB.com late Friday that no deal was made.

FOX Sports Ken Rosenthal also reported that Marmol would have waived his no trade clause and approved a trade to the Angels but tweeted the Cubs "pulled the deal off the table and trade is not happening." The Angels were believed to be talking to other teams interested in Haren.

Marmol, 30, is coming off a season in which he converted 20 of 23 save opportunities and posted a 3.42 ERA in 61 games. The Cubs do not have an obvious closer in the wings, but could've gone with lefty James Russell, righty Rafael Dolis or righty Alberto Cabrera.

Haren, 32, fell short of 200 innings for the first time in eight seasons in 2012, tossing 176 2/3 because of back problems, which landed him on the disabled list for the first time in his career. The right-hander was 12-13 in 30 games with a career-high 4.33 ERA.

Marmol is set to receive $9.8 million next year, while the Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto had until 11 p.m. CT on Friday to decide whether to exercise a $15.5 million option on Haren. The Angels were believed to be willing to exercise the option and pay the $3.5 million equivalent of the buyout as part of a trade in order to get a quality player in return. Haren has said he doesn't want to leave California.

The Cubs, coming off a 101-loss season, are in the market for at least two starting pitchers after dealing Paul Maholm and Ryan Dempster at the Trade Deadline.

Dempster's deal also did not go smoothly. The Cubs had reportedly agreed to send him to the Braves in exchange for Randall Delgado in July, but the deal was leaked before the right-hander had agreed to waive his no-trade rights, and it fell through. Dempster was eventually sent to the Rangers at the Trade Deadline.

After the trade was nixed the Angels did not pick up Haren's 2013 option making him a Free Agent. The Angels also did not pick up the 2013 option on OF Torii Hunter making him a Free Agent too.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Suspended pitcher Bartolo Colon is getting a second chance with the Oakland Athletics, agreeing to terms on a $3 million, one-year contract that includes potential performance bonuses.

The AL West champions made the announcement Saturday. The 39-year-old Colon was suspended for 50 games on Aug. 22 after testing positive for testosterone. The ban will run five games into the 2013 season.
