Trade: D’Agostini goes to Devils

Jason Brough

Mar 22, 2013, 12:30 PM EDT

Unable to crack the Blues’ roster on a consistent basis, Matt D’Agostini will see what he can do in New Jersey, as the 26-year-old forward has been traded to the Devils, along with a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2015, for a conditional fourth- or fifth-round draft pick in 2015

The trade was first reported by Andy Strickland of True Hockey.

D’Agostini has one goal and one assist in 16 games this season. He scored a career-high 21 times in 2010-11, but his production fell off in 2011-12 — a season that saw him suffer a serious concussion in February. He ended up with just nine goals and nine assists in 55 games.

D’Agostini is a pending restricted free agent, and the budget-conscious Blues already have a bunch of those on their plate. Defensemen Alex Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk, plus forwards Chris Stewart and Patrik Berglund, would have taken priority over D’Agostini.

Interesting trade if it goes through.

from tsn.ca:

The Penguins and Dallas Stars have a trade in place that would see veteran forward Brenden Morrow headed to Pittsburgh in exchange for a package that would include defenceman Joe Morrow, according to sources.

The deal, however, hinges on Brenden Morrow waiving his no trade clause.

Scoring six goals and five assists in 29 games this season, Brenden Morrow is currently in the final year of his six-year contract worth an annual average value of $4.1 million.

He has spent his entire 12-year career with the Stars. In 835 career games he has 243 goals and 285 assists.

A member of Canada' Olympic Gold Medal-winning team in 2010, Brenden Morrow also has 78 career playoff games under his belt. He has 17 goals and 25 assists in the post-season.

He was originally selected by Dallas in the first round (25th overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.

Joe Morrow is playing with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the America Hockey League, where he has recorded four goals and 11 assists through 57 games this season.

The 20-year-old native of Edmonton was drafted by the Penguins in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Depending on what else is headed to Dallas this looks like a pretty good deal for the Stars. There were some rumblings about Boston kicking the tires on Morrow but Dallas apparently wanted Caron and another top prospect and that's too much for a 3rd line guy that's on his last legs.

EDIT - Apparently Boston has come in with a final offer and since Morrow has a NTC it's up to him where he goes or if he stays.

You just worry about what your team will do with yet another top 5 draft pick. ;)

Getting Morrow for Morrow is more of a depth move by Pitt. Joe Morrow was scratched a few times by Pitts AHL team because He really didn't know on how to play Defense as a Defenseman. He was more of a Power Play speciallist for the Winterhawks, when He was up in Portland. Brendan Morrow has been a fragile China Doll over the past several seasons. That's why He didn't fetch more for Dallas.

Pittsburgh makes another deal.

from tsn.ca:

A day after adding Brendan Morrow, the Pittsburgh Penguins continued to gear up for a Stanley Cup playoff run.

On Monday, the club acquired defenceman Douglas Murray from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for their second round draft pick in both the 2013 and 2014 NHL Drafts.

The 33-year-old Swede has scored three assists with a minus-eight rating in 29 games with the Sharks this season.

Murray is in the final year of a four-year, $10 million deal he signed with the Sharks prior to the 2009-10 season. That deal carries an average annual value of $2.5 million.

The six-foot-three, 240-pound Swede ranked first on the Sharks in blocked shots (64) third on the team in hits (56) all while managing only 17:09 average time on ice, his lowest total over the past four seasons.

Originally drafted in the eighth round (241st overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft by the Sharks. In 451 career games - all with San Jose - he has scored six goals, added 53 assists and posted a plus-32 rating.

They identified him as a Swede twice. Guess they thought it was important.

Semin signs extension with Carolina.

from tsn.ca:

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed forward Alexander Semin to a five-year, $35 million contract extension.

"We're very happy to retain Alex," said Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford. "Alex is an elite player and has been a major contributor to the Hurricanes having a very strong top line."

Semin, 29, is in his eighth NHL season and his first with the Hurricanes, after signing as a free agent on July 26, 2012.

Through 30 games this season, the Russian sniper has eight goals and 22 assists with a plus-18 rating. He is tied for 11th among all NHL skaters in assists this season, and tied for 10th in plus/minus rating.

Drafted by the Washington Capitals in the first round (13th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Semin has 499 career NHL games under his belt with 205 goals, 233 assists and a career plus-83 rating.
