Trade: Clowe approves deal sending him to Rangers

Jason Brough

Apr 2, 2013, 6:28 PM EDT

Ryane Clowe has agreed to be traded from San Jose to the New York Rangers, according to multiple reports and confirmed by CSNBayArea.com’s Kevin Kurz.

In return, the Sharks (per TSN’s Bob McKenzie) will receive a second-round pick, a third-round pick (formerly Florida’s) and a conditional second-round pick in 2014 (dependent on Clowe re-signing or the Rangers winning two playoff series; if not, it’s a fifth-round pick).

Clowe has had a frustrating 2013 season, to say the least. The 30-year-old has registered 65 shots on net, yet he’s still looking for his first goal.

The Rangers, meanwhile, have the NHL’s worst offense, averaging just 2.26 goals per game.

So in that sense, there’s something rather amusing about adding a guy that’s been absolutely snake-bitten this season.

But it’s Clowe’s career body of work that had multiple teams — including Philadelphia, Vancouver, and Montreal — talking to the Sharks about the big winger. Twice he’s scored 20 goals in a season. Overall, he’s got 101 goals in 423 games, with 170 assists to boot.

Perhaps more importantly, he’s shown he can produce in the playoffs.

Of course, making the playoffs is no guarantee for the Rangers, a team many picked to win the Stanley Cup, but one that finds itself barely hanging onto eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

The Rangers host the Penguins Wednesday, then travel to Pittsburgh Friday for a rematch.

Clowe is a pending unrestricted free agent who’s in the last year of a four-year, $14.5 million contract.

Per terms of his no-trade clause, he first had to approve the trade to the Rangers.

According to ESPN’s Katie Strang, Clowe chose the Rangers over the Canucks.

Trade: Canucks get Derek Roy from Dallas

Jason Brough

Apr 2, 2013, 12:48 PM EDT

The Vancouver Canucks got their center today, acquiring Derek Roy from Dallas for a second-round pick and defenseman prospect Kevin Connauton.

The trade was first reported by Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos.

Roy, 29, is a pending unrestricted free agent ($4 million cap hit) that has four goals and 18 assists this season. His best season was with the Buffalo Sabres in 2007-08, when he had 32 goals and 49 assists.

The Canucks have been in search of a center, specifically one for the the third line, to replace Manny Malhotra (injured) and Cody Hodgson (traded to Buffalo last year).

For more on Roy, here’s our Trade Bait profile.

In Connauton, the Stars get an offensive defenseman that has 25 points in 60 games for AHL Chicago this season. The 23-year-old was a third-round pick of the Canucks in 2009, after which he scored 72 points in 69 games for the Vancouver Giants (WHL) in 2009-10. He still needs to improve the defensive aspects of his game, however.

After acquiring Roy, the Canucks sent Jordan Schroeder back to AHL Chicago. Vancouver’s next game is Thursday at home to the Oilers.

On to a different subjxet. Has there been any rumors about the Oilers going on up there? As My 2nd favorite team in the league, I'm curious since the deadline is Wednesday. Also, what are the chances of Iginla signing with Edmonton in the off-season? Go Oilers go!!!!

Shouldn't be anything to major, Oilers are in the hunt so I don't see them trading Whitney or Hemsky.  If Iginla doesn't get his cup in Pittsburgh, I can see him signing with another team that is close to a cup, which the Oilers are still not close to.  It's fun watching the Flames dying as well.

The players are not the problem with the Rangers, it's the stubborn asshole of a coach they have.

I meant that 3 good draft picks for Clowe is a huge overpayment...that's on their GM, Glen Sather.

Defenseman Kirill Gotovets was acquired by the Chicago Blackhawks from the Tampa Bay Lightning for forward Philippe Paradis on Tuesday.

Gotovets, a 2009 seventh-round draft pick of Tampa Bay, has played the past three seasons at Cornell University. He scored two goals and assisted on 15 others this season.

And they sent down Miller and Kreider. I hate the Rangers!
