Torres scored a garbage goal near the end of the game. Hawks won 6-2.

Trade: Kings get defenseman Ellerby from Florida

Jason Brough

Feb 8, 2013, 11:37 AM EST

Los Angeles has added some depth to its banged-up blue line, acquiring defenseman Keaton Ellerby from the Florida Panthers for the fifth-round draft pick the Kings got from New Jersey for Andrei Loktionov.

Ellerby, 24, has no points in nine games this season while logging an average of 15:11. The 10th overall pick in the 2007 draft has 17 points (2G, 15A) in 125 career games.

Ellerby – a pending restricted free agent on a one-year $700,000 contract — is expected to join his new team in Nashville, where it lost 3-0 to the Predators last night.

The trade shouldn’t come as a surprise. Kings GM Dean Lombardi has been working the phones in search of blue-line help. His team is currently without the services of Willie Mitchell (knee) and Matt Greene (back).

“Right now we have to operate on the premise Willie and Greener are done for the year,” Lombardi told Lisa Dillman of the Los Angeles Times.

“If [Mitchell] comes back it’s a tremendous bonus. If not, we can’t continue to rely on that. We’ve got to get in that mindset.”

The Boston Bruins have traded goaltender Tim Thomas to the New York Islanders in exchange for a conditional draft pick in 2014 or 2015.

Thomas announced last summer that he was taking a year off from hockey.

Thomas is in the final year of his current contract, which carries a $5 million cap hit for the 2012-13 season. The no-movement clause that is a part of the deal expired last July 1.

The 38-year-old went 35-19-1 with a 2.36 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage this past season. In the playoffs, he had a 2.14 GAA and a .923 save percentage. Boston lost in seven games to Washington in the first round.

Thomas won the 2009 and 2011 Vezina Trophy, and has a 196-121-45 record and 2.48 GAA in 378 career games with the Bruins. In 50 postseason games, he holds a 29-21 mark with a 2.07 GAA.

Thomas won the 2011 Conn Smythe Trophy after leading Boston to its first Stanley Cup title since 1972.

More to follow.

Rumour has it that Boston will now go hard after Iginla.

EDIT - Islander GM Garth Snow confirmed that Boston will get the pick if Thomas plays at least 1 game for the Islanders.

Yeah, If Iginla wanted out of Calgary it would have happened by now.  He has a NTC and has said he will not waive it.

Right - because nobody with a NTC has ever been traded before. To be honest I've never heard him say that he wouldn't waive his NTC but I have heard him say a number of times that he would do what's right for the organization. As dumb as Feaster is I think even he realizes that the longer he holds onto Iginla the lower his value gets. I think if Boston offered Caron, another good prospect ( and keep yer damn hands off Dougie Hamilton ) and a 1st and 2nd round pick that might be enough to get Iginla in a Bruins uniform.

I honestly don't see Iggy leaving Calgary.  Plus that's a pretty steep price to pay for a guy who is going to be a UFA this summer.  Jay Fatster would do that deal in a second, buy Iggy is going to Sundin it.

Today's game in Boston against Tampa Bay has been PPD due to the big snowstorm.

Jordan Caron still hasn't proved anything yet and the 2 picks aren't that good. Calgary would be stupid to do that, but it is Jay Feaster we are talking about.

First shutout in over 100 games to boot.

My biggest fear is that this run is like the Bruins coming out a coule of years ago and being unbeatble early, only to come back down to earth and lose in the playoffs when they shouldn't have. Great runs like this are fine, but you don't want to peak right off the bat in any sport.

Article in the NJ Star Ledger about great rookie NY Ranger debuts: http://www.nj.com/rangers/index.ssf/2013/02/rangers_links_jt_miller_isnt_t.html#incart_river

It's a very disappointing article to me because the writer focuses on the present roster. It's not like Don Murdoch in 1976, who, before he was a coke expert, scored 5 goals in (I think) his 2nd NHL game. That guy was still the single biggest enigma I can think of in the many years I've watched (and been let down by) the Rangers!

Even more impressive is that Chicago has only played 2 home games so far. Nice win by Boston tonight 3 - 1 over Buffalo avenging their only regulation loss this season. Boston now has a 8-1-1 record and has only given up 21 goals so far.

True, but they now have a 7-game homestand, which is fine, but that many at home in a row probably isn't good, either. The honey-do lists for the returning players will probably result in some injuries. :)

I'm guessing the Hawks certainly aren't alone in the weird scheduling department this year.
