Quarterback Carson Palmer has been traded from the Oakland Raiders to the Arizona Cardinals for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2014 draft, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The Raiders will receive the draft pick if Palmer starts 13 games for the Cardinals in the 2013 season. The return the Raiders received for Palmer is far less than the price the team paid to acquire the quarterback from the Cincinnati Bengals in 2011: a 2012 first-round draft pick and a second-round selection in the 2013 draft.

Palmer dined with Cardinals team personnel Monday night, sources told ESPN.

Palmer will help solidify a Cardinals quarterback position that has been in flux since Kurt Warner retired after the 2009 season.

Quarterback Drew Stanton signed with Arizona last month, following new coach Bruce Arians to the Cardinals from the Indianapolis Colts. At the time of the signing, Arians said he was confident Stanton could handle the starting job, but it's expected Palmer would move into the top spot once a trade is finalized.

On Monday, the Cardinals released quarterback John Skelton, who started 17 games for the team in the past three seasons.

The Raiders decided to move on from Palmer, acquiring quarterback Matt Flynn in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks on Monday.

Palmer put up prolific numbers in his first full year as a starter in Oakland, but that led to little success for the team. He completed 61.1 percent of his passes and threw for 4,018 yards in 15 games -- second most ever for the Raiders -- with 22 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

The 33-year-old Palmer, who is owed $13 million this season, was unwilling to take a pay cut to remain with the Raiders, according to sources.

"I talked to Carson I guess it was probably Saturday, over the weekend, and kind of explained where we were at, what the process was. I think he and his representation totally understand where we're at," Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Monday in a conference call to discuss the acquisition of Flynn.

"I think, at the end of the day, when we looked at it both from his standpoint and from our standpoint, we just realized that it was time for us to move on and move forward. We felt like Matt Flynn gave us a great option," Allen said.

LOL @ the Raiders.

Zona just got better. With Palmer and Mendenhall added to the team to go along with a pretty good defense they will be contenders.

Bills add Alan Branch on one-year deal
Posted by Darin Gantt on April 2, 2013, 2:27 PM EDT

The Bills haven’t made much noise in free agency, but they did just add some size.

According to multiple reports, the Bills have signed Seahawks defensive tackle Alan Branch to a one-year deal worth up to $3 million.

Branch started 31 games the last two seasons for the Seahawks, after starting just three games in four years with the Cardinals, who chose him in the second round of the 2007 Draft.

Buccaneers add Nate Kaeding, Steve Smith
Posted by Mike Wilkening on April 2, 2013, 12:27 PM EDT

The Buccaneers and placekicker Nate Kaeding have agreed to a one-year deal, the Des Moines Register reported Tuesday.

Also, the Bucs have added to their wide receiver depth, signing former Rams, Eagles and Giants pass catcher Steve Smith, NFL writer Jenna Laine reported.

Smith caught 14 passes for 131 yards in nine games for the Rams in 2012. The Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator, Mike Sullivan, was Smith’s position coach when the receiver had his most productive years in New York.

Kaeding appeared in five games a season ago — three with San Diego, two with Miami. The Buccaneers’ placekicker, Connor Barth, connected on 28-of-33 field goals a season ago, and he signed a four-year deal with the club last year.

Raiders sign Tracy Porter
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 2, 2013, 11:47 AM EDT

Tracy Porter will be staying in the AFC West but leaving Denver.

The Raiders have reached an agreement on a one-year deal with Porter, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Although Porter opened the 2012 season as a starting cornerback in Denver, he began having health problems in October that were apparently linked to a seizure he suffered in the preseason, and he missed most of the rest of the year. Porter thought he was capable of playing and expressed some displeasure at being sidelined, but when he finally returned to the field in December he suffered a concussion in his first game back and didn’t play for the Broncos again.

When the Broncos added veteran cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie it became clear that Porter wouldn’t be back. Now the 26-year-old Porter will go to Oakland, and if he’s healthy, he’s a solid addition to the Raiders’ secondary.

That's where you end up when you use a first round pick for JaMarcus Russell and then use two first rounders to get Carson Palmer and spend a third for Terrelle Pryor and then have to go out and get Matt Flynn on top of that.

Bengals claim John Skelton off waivers
Posted by Darin Gantt on April 3, 2013, 4:58 PM EDT

John Skelton must have made quite an impression on the Bengals by leading the Cardinals to 16 unanswered fourth-quarter points on Christmas Eve, 2011.

Of course, the Bengals still won that game 23-16, so maybe they just thought he was better than the guys on hand.

The Bengals claimed the former Cardinals quarterback off waivers Wednesday, according to Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Skelton has 15 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in 17 career starts, but was the second quarterback thrown overboard by new Cardinals coach Bruce Arians (following Kevin Kolb).

Oddly enough, Skelton has a chance to hang around with the Bengals. After losing free agent backup Bruce Gradkowski to the Steelers, the Bengals responded by signing Josh Johnson, and the only other backup on the roster is Zac Robinson.

NFL suspends Cardinals LB Daryl Washington four games
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 3, 2013, 5:00 PM EDT

The NFL has suspended Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington for the first four games of the 2013 regular season.

Washington, who started all 16 games last season and was chosen to the Pro Bowl, has been suspended for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. He will be able to participate in offseason work and the preseason but will then have to stay away from the team for the first four weeks of the regular season.

The league offers few details and does not confirm which substance players tested positive for when it confirms suspensions, but as we noted with the suspension of Baltimore’s Christian Thompson, a suspension under the substance-abuse policy happens only after the player violates the policy multiple times. So Washington must be a repeat offender.

Washington acknowledged the suspension and apologized in a statement released by the Cardinals.

“I was always taught that when you make a mistake, you admit it, learn from it and face whatever consequences there are,” Washington said. “I take full responsibility and I understand that I let down my teammates, the organization and fans. I apologize for that and promise that no one will work harder to make up for it.”

The Cardinals drafted Washington out of Texas Christian in the second round of the 2010 NFL draft. He became a starter as a rookie and had his best season last year, recording 134 tackles, nine sacks, one interception and two forced fumbles.

Panthers agree to deal with Domenik Hixon
Posted by Darin Gantt on April 3, 2013, 5:12 PM EDT

The Panthers’ perpetual search for complementary receivers has led them to a player new general manager Dave Gettleman is familiar with.

According to Jason LaCanfora of CBSSports.com, former Giants wideout Domenik Hixon has agreed to terms with the Panthers, after interest from the Browns.

Hixon could step into the third wideout role vacated when former Panthers wideout Louis Murphy took his spare-part job with the Giants.

The Panthers also added Ted Ginn this offseason, giving them plenty of experienced competition for a young group with no sure things beyond starters Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell.

Chargers add Jarius Wynn
Posted by Mike Wilkening on April 3, 2013, 5:24 PM EDT

The Chargers have signed free agent defensive end Jarius Wynn to a one-year contract, the club said Wednesday.

Wynn (6-3, 285) appeared in seven games for the Titans in 2011, recording six tackles. He will again play in a 3-4 scheme, just like did with the Packers, with whom he played for 2009 through 2011.

Wynn’s best season came in 2011, when he notched 19 tackles and three sacks in 16 games (four starts) for Green Bay.

Wynn played collegiately at Georgia. He’s entering his fifth NFL season.

Frank Zombo heads to Kansas City
Posted by Josh Alper on April 3, 2013, 6:27 PM EDT

Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey has reached out to a familiar face to help bolster the linebacking corps in Kansas City.

Dorsey was previously a member of the front office in Green Bay, where he got to know linebacker Frank Zombo. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Zombo will be following Dorsey to Kansas City as a free agent.

Zombo was set to become a restricted free agent this offseason, but the Packers chose not to tender him a contract. Zombo missed the first eight games of the 2012 season on the PUP list after a hamstring injury and wound up with eight tackles in seven games as a reserve. He’ll likely be vying to play a similar backup role in K.C. next season since neither Tamba Hali nor Justin Houston will be giving up their spots in the starting lineup.

Zombo joined the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2010 and had five sacks across his first two seasons with Green Bay.
