Giants re-sign Bear Pascoe, Shaun Rogers
Posted by Josh Alper on February 7, 2013, 4:18 PM EST

The Giants let three members of the 2012 rosters go this week and they’ve decided to bring back two others.

Tight end Bear Pascoe and defensive tackle Shaun Rogers have both signed contracts for the 2013 seasons. Rogers spent the year on injured reserve after developing a blood clot in his leg over the summer. With Chris Canty gone, there will be snaps for the taking at the position.

Pascoe was set to be a restricted free agent this offseason, but the Giants put off dealing with that by just going ahead and signing him to a one-year deal. Multiple reports peg the value of that deal at $715,000.

Pascoe’s mostly been a blocker in his four years with the team, compiling 26 catches for 252 yards and a touchdown over that period. He should return to that role, even if Martellus Bennett leaves as a free agent. Travis Beckum has been hurt more than healthy throughout his time with the Giants and the team would be looking for a starter with a larger skillset than Pascoe.

Adrian Peterson has sports hernia surgery
Posted by Michael David Smith on February 7, 2013, 12:25 PM EST

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is recovering from surgery.

The Vikings announced on Thursday afternoon that Peterson had successful surgery for a sports hernia, and that there is no reason to be concerned that the injury will be an issue going forward.

“Adrian Peterson had a surgical procedure done today by Dr. William Meyers, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,” the team said in a statement. “Dr. Meyers was able to successfully repair Adrian’s abdominal core muscle injury (sports hernia). We expect a speedy recovery with no long-term concerns.”

A year ago, Peterson was recovering from a much more significant injury to his knee. That recovery went so well that Peterson won the league’s Most Valuable Player award. So a little thing like sports hernia surgery probably won’t slow him down.

AP was pissed he didnt get comeback player, now he wants that one too

Bradshaw is some the JETS should sign. He's much better option tah Shonn Greene.

Plus I think Greene is a free agent and he has shown enough that he is good but better suited in a complimentary role and he'll want more money than the Jets would be able to pay him

Saints announce Rob Ryan hire
Posted by Mike Florio on February 9, 2013, 10:21 AM EST

The Saints remain extremely popular in New Orleans.  The team’s latest moves may not be.

Coach Sean Payton officially has announced that Rob Ryan will become the team’s new defensive coordinator, and that Stan Kwan will serve as the assistant special-teams coordinator.

“I’m pleased the opportunity has presented itself for us to be able to add both Rob Ryan and Stan Kwan to our coaching staff,” Payton said in a team-issued release.  “In regards to Rob, we have experience in preparing and playing against his defenses and they’ve always been challenging in terms of the different looks and pressures that they feature. We’ve had the chance to visit with each other and talk about our visions for our team and I’m excited about moving forward as we prepare for the 2013 season.  Rob is enthusiastic about joining our team and getting right to work. Stan is a veteran coach that understands all nuances of the special teams games and will work closely with Greg McMahon. He has a wealth of knowledge and I believe he will be a good fit on our staff.”

It’s not Kwan that will cause local concern.  Many will view Rob Ryan as a 3-4 version of Gregg Williams.  Brash, loud, abrasive, and quite possibly trouble.

That said, Saints fans loved Williams’ bravado until the word “bounty” first flowed from the league office (or at least until Williams’ defense stunk in 2011).  If Payton can ensure Ryan won’t do anything that will get the franchise in trouble, Ryan brings the type of swagger that the Saints enjoyed when Williams was running the show.

Still, there’s a delicate balance that will need to be maintained, and there’s nothing delicate about Rob Ryan.  At times during his two-year stint in Dallas, it seemed like he was trying to take the place over.

In fairness to Ryan, his defense in Cleveland took the Superdome over in 2010, beating the Saints 30-17 in the first season after New Orleans won its first championship.

From Payton’s perspective, his willingness to not make a safe hire shows that he’s highly motivated to win more championships.  In that regard, fans should be encouraged — and they should realize that Payton is prepared to ensure that history doesn’t repeat itself.

At least not the bad kind of history.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/02/11/michael-vick-eagles-agree-on-one-year-deal/

The Eagles didn’t cut quarterback Michael Vick before the February 6 deadline that guaranteed $3 million of his 2013 salary and it doesn’t look like they’ll be cutting him at any other point either.

A release from the team on Monday announced that Vick and the Eagles have agreed on a new one-year deal that will keep Vick in town for Chip Kelly’s first season as the head coach in Philadelphia. There are no financial terms revealed at this point, but it seems safe to say that the Eagles won’t be paying the $15.5 million that Vick was set to receive under the terms of the six-year deal he signed with the team before the 2011 season.

There have been varied reports about Kelly’s interest in working with Vick, but this news suggests that Kelly sees at least the potential for Vick to succeed in his offensive scheme. If Vick can rebound after two rough seasons, the Eagles will likely continue the relationship beyond this season. If not, they’ll split up without any further ado.

In the release, the Eagles say Vick will compete for the job with Nick Foles. They also don’t rule out more competition being added through free agency or the draft. The Eagles answered one question Monday, but there are sure to be many more asked in the days and weeks to come.

This is actually a great move for Vick.  If they cut him, after the season he had, he'd have limited options.  If he wins this job and performs well, he will get a  lot more money on the back end.  The Eagles OL was like swiss cheese last year, and Demetress Bell was the worst of the lot.  They cut him and hope to be healthy this year.  Mike Vick will get back to what he used to be:  A very average/good QB with immense physical talent that can win games.

Bills continue veteran purge with George Wilson
Posted by Darin Gantt on February 11, 2013, 2:09 PM EST

The Bills are busy this afternoon releasing veteran starters.

After dropping linebacker Nick Barnett, they’ve apparently also parted ways with safety George Wilson, according to Tim Graham of the Buffalo News.

The 31-year-old Wilson was a team captain and the Bills’ union representative, but his release will take them off the hook for his $2.9 million salary.

With Jairus Byrd a pending unrestricted free agent, it leaves a big hole in the middle of the Bills defense.

Agent says Packers “getting ready” to release Woodson
Posted by Josh Alper on February 15, 2013, 12:02 PM EST

It looks like Charles Woodson’s run with the Packers is about to come to an end.

There’s been a lot of speculation about what kind of future Woodson has in Green Bay at the age of 37 with a contract set to pay him $10 million in salary and bonuses in 2013. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and other members of the team have said that they’d like to see Woodson back in green and gold, but it isn’t going to work out that way.

Friday brought a somewhat cryptic tweet from the account for Woodson’s wine business thanked Green Bay for a great run, leading to speculation that Woodson was out in Green Bay. Woodson’s agent confirmed that development to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

“They’re getting ready to release him. It’s part of the business,” Carl Poston said.

Poston said that Woodson plans to continue playing and that he’d like to sign with a Super Bowl contender. There will surely be teams interested in seeing what the former Defensive Player of the Year and frequent All-Pro has left in the tank and Woodson will be able to start having those conversations as soon as the Packers make his departure official.

Eagles signed Dennis Dixon, a QB off of the Ravens practice squad, to a 2 year contract.  He was drafted by the Steelers in '08 and has barely played since then.  But...he ran Chip Kelly's offense really well in college, and to me, it looks like bad news for Nick Foles.

Titus Young's time in the NFL is rapidly going down the tubes. Nine days after the St. Louis Rams claimed the wide receiver on waivers following his release from the Lions, Rams head coach Jeff Fisher, who has taken risks on a lot of players with character questions throughout his long coaching career, said Young will not be a part of the team. The Rams will give Young his release

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Dwight Freeney and Austin Collie were not expected to be back with the Indianapolis Colts next season.

On Friday, the team made it official by issuing a statement saying it would not re-sign Freeney, the Colts' career sacks leader, or Collie, a key player in their second Super Bowl run since moving to Indy. Both will now become unrestricted free agents.

Hopefully, Kelly can bring a playbook that Dixon can understand.  He was simply horrible in Pittsburgh.  Real jittery during his starts after getting weeks of reps.  Looked clueless at times.  Maybe he was just very raw.  I was glad when he got the hell out of town.

Great sports name.

Eagles add Ed Wang
Posted by Mike Florio on February 15, 2013, 4:03 PM EST

The Eagles are stockpiling former fifth-round draft picks.

Earlier this week, it was former Oregon quarterback Dennis Dixon, a fifth-round pick of the Steelers in 2008.  Now, the Eagles have announced the addition of offensive lineman Ed Wang, a fifth-round pick of the Bills in 2010.

Wang, the first Chinese-American player ever drafted by an NFL team, played in six games as a rookie, and then he spent all of 2011 on injured reserve. Wang signed with the Raiders during the 2012 offseason, but he later was cut.

He could eventually be cut by the Eagles.  In the offseason, teams may now have 90 players.  By September, that number drops to 53.

Bills re-sign Colin Brown
Posted by Mike Florio on February 15, 2013, 7:54 PM EST

The Bills have re-signed a backup quarterback. So it makes sense that they also have signed a backup offensive lineman to protect him.  On the bench.

Colin Brown, who would have been a restricted free agent, has signed a two-year, $1.445 million contract, per a source with knowledge of the deal.

Brown received a signing bonus of $25,000.  He’ll earn a base salary of $630,000 in 2013, along with $30,000 workout bonus.  The deal contains a split salary of $358,000, which will be paid in the event Brown lands on injured reserve.

For 2014, Brown has a base salary of $730,000 and a workout bonus of $30,000.
