Kubiak still confident Foster will be back on time
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 19, 2013, 4:25 PM EDT

The Texans keep expecting running back Arian Foster to come back at a certain time, and he keeps not coming back.

But coach Gary Kubiak said he’s still confident that Foster would be ready for the regular season opener, despite the fact he hasn’t been activated from the PUP list or taken a snap this preseason.

“I am, because I watch him work,” Kubiak said, via Brian Smith of the Houston Chronicle. “I’ve been watching him — he’s basically going through practice or has been since we’ve been in camp on his own with [head trainer] Geoff [Kaplan]. And, obviously, there’s been a little setback as we try to get the soreness out of him. But from what I’ve seen, yes, because it’s not like he’s been standing around for the last three weeks.”

Asked if he had a new date for Foster’s return from calf and back issues, and Kubiak said if he did, “I’d give it you.”

“[Monday] was my date and that one didn’t work,” Kubiak said. “So we’ll just have some patience here.”

If the regular season rolls around and Foster is well and able and performs the way he has in the past, there will be no reason for concern. Until then, it seems some of the offseason concerns about his condition might have been a bigger deal than he was willing to admit.

Saints release Steve Breaston and Patrick Crayton
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 19, 2013, 5:24 PM EDT

Apparently, all those veteran receivers the Saints brought in recently weren’t in play for the third wideout job.

The Saints released Steve Breaston and Patrick Crayton Monday, ending their short stints with the team.

According to Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Saints also waived five players: Defensive backs A.J. Davis and Dion Turner, linebacker Chase Thomas, wide receiver Jarred Fayson and guard Ricky Henry.

Clearing out those older wideouts is a good sign the team’s growing more comfortable with players such as Nick Toon and Kenny Stills. They’re looking for a dependable third after Joe Morgan was lost for the season to a knee injury, and Toon showed some deep play ability Friday night against the Raiders, and could take advantage.

Coughlin doesn’t know severity of Cruz’s heel injury
Posted by Mike Florio on August 18, 2013, 10:49 PM EDT

The Giants got good news when X-rays on receiver Victor Cruz’s injured heel were negative. After the preseason game against the Colts, however, coach Tom Coughlin had no news.

“I don’t know,” Coughlin said regarding the potential severity of the injury, via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. ”He runs to make his living and obviously has an issue with his heel.”

More tests are expected.

The Giants open the regular season in three weeks at Dallas, on Sunday Night Football.

Report: Cruz won’t play until the regular season starts
Posted by Mike Florio on August 19, 2013, 5:38 PM EDT

The Giants got a major scare from receiver Victor Cruz on Sunday night. For that reason, don’t expect to see Cruz again this preseason.

Per Art Stapleton of the Bergen Record, Cruz won’t play until the September 8 opener against the Cowboys, on Sunday Night Football.

Technically, Cruz has a heel contusion. He has been placed in a walking boot for now, and he won’t practice on Tuesday. While it could have been worse, missing practice is bad enough in the eyes of the man who famously called injuries a “cancer” when hired nine years ago.

“The concern is any player that misses practices is missing the opportunity to experience things and instinctively react to things,” Coughlin told reporters, via Stapleton. “That’s what you worry about with any player who misses time and misses practices because you don’t get the opportunity through repetition to learn in the multiplicity of things that can happen on any given play.  It’s important for everyone to understand that.  It is about being able to practice, it is about getting as many reps as you can so you become much more aware of the circumstances surrounding each situation.”

The circumstances for Cruz are better than initially feared; even if he doesn’t practice until the week before the game at Dallas, Coughlin should be happy that the so-called cancer of injury didn’t claim the season of one of the best slot receivers in the game.

Le’Veon Bell leaves after one series with an injured foot
Posted by Josh Alper on August 19, 2013, 8:28 PM EDT

Steelers rookie running back Le’Veon Bell missed the first preseason game because of a left knee injury and then was in and out of practice last week for the same reason, but he healed up enough to make the start at running back on Monday night against the Steelers.

Bell didn’t last long before heading back to the trainers. Bell carried the ball four times on the Steelers’ first offensive drive, but Jonathan Dwyer was on the field with the offense for the Steelers’ second possession.

Bell, meanwhile, was on the bench getting looked at by trainers. The Steelers announced that Bell was done for the night because of a right foot injury a short time later, ending his first NFL game action almost as quickly as it started.

The fear for the Steelers entering the game had to be that Bell would aggravate his knee injury again. Now they’ve got something completely different to worry about in regard to the man they’ve installed at the top of their depth chart at running back.

Kirk Cousins has a sprained right foot
Posted by Josh Alper on August 19, 2013, 10:24 PM EDT

The Redskins had an uncomfortably familiar moment Monday night in their first home game since their playoff loss to the Seahawks when their starting quarterback had to exit the game with an injury.

The starter was Kirk Cousins not Robert Griffin III, the injury was to his foot instead of his knee and it was a preseason game, but otherwise the difference is negligible.

Cousins has been diagnosed with a sprained foot and there’s no timetable yet for his recovery or return. Albert Breer of the NFL Network reports that Cousins’ sprain is located in the middle of the foot, which has led to extended absences for several players in the past. Again, there’s no timetable but it seems like a good bet that Rex Grossman will be starting the team’s third and fourth preseason games.

The odds might not be as good, but there’s also a chance that Grossman’s the guy backing up Robert Griffin III when the Redskins start the regular season against the Eagles.

Report: Barry Cofield has broken hand
Posted by Mike Wilkening on August 19, 2013, 11:00 PM EDT

Redskins starting nose tackle Barry Cofield exited Monday’s exhibition game vs. Pittsburgh with an injury, the club said earlier on Monday night.

According to Redskins radio reporter Rick “Doc” Walker, and via Chris Russell of ESPN 980 in Washington D.C., Cofield’s injury is a broken right hand. (Walker originally said it was Cofield’s left hand but later corrected his report, according to Russell, and Walker tweeted to that effect as well.)

Per Russell, who cited a report from Walker, Cofield does not believe the injury is a major one.

Cofield, 29, has started all 32 regular-season games since joining Washington in 2011. Chris Neild and Ron Brace are the next two nose tackles on the club’s depth chart.

Anthony Spencer isn’t running yet
Posted by Josh Alper on August 20, 2013, 8:15 AM EDT

Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer is still planning to be on the field when the Cowboys open the season against the Giants on September 8, but he’s got an obstacle or two to clear before he can make his return from last month’s surgery on his left knee.

Spencer has yet to start running since the operation, something that he’ll obviously need to do before he’s going to even think about getting back on the field for a full practice let alone a game. He’s lifting, using the elliptical and doing other rehab work in an effort to stay in good shape while he waits for the chance to move to the next stage in preparation for the season.

“The more strength I build up, the more stuff I’m able to do in the weight room, it’s making me be able to walk a little stronger and feel less pain each day,” Spencer said, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “So it’s getting better.”

Spencer’s absence during camp has kept him from getting accustomed to his new role on the defensive line after spending his NFL career as a linebacker up to this point. There’s not much to do other than hope that mental work takes care of enough that Spencer doesn’t struggle while doing it on the fly come the regular season.

Three ’72 Dolphins skip White House visit for political reasons
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 20, 2013, 10:53 AM EDT

President Obama is welcoming the undefeated 1972 Dolphins to the White House today, but three players won’t be there because they have a problem with the president.

Former Dolphins guard Bob Kuechenberg, center Jim Langer and defensive tackle Manny Fernandez all told Dave Hyde of the Sun Sentinel that they don’t want to appear alongside a president whose policies they don’t support.

“I’ll just say my views are diametrically opposed to the president’s,” Fernandez said. “Enough said. Let’s leave it at that. I hope everyone enjoys the trip who goes.”

Added Kuechenberg, “I want to be careful, because mom said if you have nothing good to say about someone, then don’t say anything. I don’t have anything good to say about someone.”

Langer suggested that it would be phony for him to pretend he has something to celebrate in the White House, as long as Obama is occupying the White House.

“We’ve got some real moral compass issues in Washington,” Langer said. “I don’t want to be in a room with those people and pretend I’m having a good time. I can’t do that. If that [angers] people, so be it.”

Whether it angers people or not, Hyde notes that it does feed a widespread perception that the ’72 Dolphins are a bunch of “Grumpy Old Men” who don’t take much joy in celebrating their great accomplishment but do delight in denigrating others, and toasting when the last undefeated NFL team loses each season. Obama is rightly recognizing that the ’72 Dolphins were a great team. If three players can’t put politics aside for long enough to enjoy that recognition, that’s their problem.

Browns name Brandon Weeden their starting quarterback
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 20, 2013, 11:00 AM EDT

Browns coach Rob Chudzinski has finally stopped delaying and made the widely expected announcement: Brandon Weeden is his starting quarterback.

“Brandon has earned this job. That’s extremely important to me. He’s gained my and his teammates complete trust,” Chudzinski said, via Steve Doerschuk ‏of the Canton Repository.

The biggest question is why Chudzinski waited so long to confirm that Weeden would start ahead of Jason Campbell and Brian Hoyer. Chudzinski said today that part of it was he wanted to gauge what kind of competitor Weeden is.

“Everything about this process is wanting to see how [Weeden] reacted,” Chudzinski said. “Weeden has seized the opportunity and produced.”

Weeden has played very well this preseason, completing 18 of 25 passes for 229 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Report: Kirk Cousins’ foot checks out okay in MRI
Posted by Josh Alper on August 20, 2013, 1:09 PM EDT

Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins said that he didn’t feel like his sprained right foot was a particularly serious injury when he sustained it against the Steelers on Monday night and it appears that his impression has been proven correct.

Alex Marvez of FOX Sports reports that the MRI done on Cousins’ foot on Tuesday came back negative for any structural injury or other problem that would keep Cousins from serving as the team’s backup quarterback this season. Cousins was diagnosed with a mid-foot sprain, which can sometimes turn out to be more once imaging reveals what’s going on inside the foot. The Redskins had just such a case earlier this month when rookie safety Phillip Thomas was lost for the year with a Lisfranc injury after initially being described as having a sprained foot.

Per Marvez, he is expected back for the season opener and may even be ready to play in the team’s final preseason game of the summer next week.

That’s obviously good news for the Redskins, even if Cousins doesn’t play in the final tune-up. The team has to feel better about heading into the regular season with their first choice insurance policy against a prolonged absence for Robert Griffin III than they would about having Rex Grossman one big hit away from leading the offense.

Belichick on Amendola: He’s day-to-day
Posted by Josh Alper on August 20, 2013, 2:18 PM EDT

Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola missed practice on Monday, which led to questions for coach Bill Belichick on Tuesday about the status of the team’s top receiver.

Anyone expecting a detailed account of why Amendola was out of practice, when he’ll be expected to return and how he’s feeling is going to be disappointed, but they probably shouldn’t have been looking to Belichick for that kind of answer in the first place.

Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com reports that Belichick said Amendola is day-to-day while avoiding any and all specifics about the nature of the injury. Without more information, that doesn’t sound like a particularly serious concern.

The Patriots play on Thursday against the Lions in their third preseason game of the year, a contest that tends to serve as a dress rehearsal for the regular season. If Amendola’s on the field for the game, there won’t be much to worry about, even with his frequent appearances on injury reports over the course of his career.

Jets lose Lex Hilliard for the season, rookie Bohanon apparently wins job
Posted by Mike Florio on August 21, 2013, 10:14 AM EDT

One of the lingering camp battles for the Jets has been resolved, by default.

Jets fullback Lex Hilliard, who appeared in 12 games and started nine last season, has been lost for the season. He’ll have surgery to repair a broken scapula suffered on Tuesday in practice.

Hilliard’s exit opens the door for Tommy Bohanon, a seventh-round rookie from Wake Forest who had been battling Hilliard for the job.

After three seasons with the Dolphins, appearing in every game, Hilliard signed with the Vikings, who cut him prior to the start of the regular season. After two games with the Patriots, Hilliard was available again. The man who coached him in Miami, Tony Sparano, brought him to New York.

Hilliard will land on injured reserve, collecting the full amount of his $715,000 base salary.  And that may be the best news for Hilliard; if he’d lost the job to Bohanon and been cut, Hilliard may have earned roughly $715,000 less than that this season.

Cardinals signing Dan Carpenter
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 21, 2013, 11:05 AM EDT

The kicker carousel continues to spin, with one getting off in Arizona.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Cardinals are signing former Dolphins kicker Dan Carpenter to a one-year deal.

That puts him face-to-face with veteran kicker Jay Feely, whom Carpenter once replaced in Miami.

With a number of teams in the market for kickers, these guys are going to play musical chairs for the next several weeks.
