RB Arian Foster back on field for Texans
By KRISTIE RIEKEN (AP Sports Writer) | The Associated Press – 1 hour 13 minutes ago

HOUSTON (AP) -- Houston running back Arian Foster has been removed from the physically unable to perform list and has practiced with the Texans for the first time since May.

Foster strained his right calf in an offseason practice in late May and struggled with a sore back after recovering from that injury.

Coach Gary Kubiak says Foster looked good in limited work Wednesday, but he doesn't expect him to play Sunday against the Saints.

Foster rushed for 1,424 yards and 15 touchdowns last year for his third straight 1,200-yard season.

Diehl to miss six week after thumb surgery
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 21, 2013, 12:44 PM EDT

Upon further review, the Giants aren’t going to be using David Diehl at guard, at least for the next month and a half.

The Giants just announced the veteran offensive lineman will have surgery this afternoon to “repair his unstable right thumb.”

Diehl practiced Tuesday with a cast on his hand, but more tests confirmed that surgery was required. He’s expected to miss six weeks.

That throws the Giants line into flux for the start of the regular season. Center David Baas is still hoping to be back for the opener after his knee injury, but left guard Kevin Boothe is working there in the interim. First-rounder Justin Pugh was going to replace Diehl at right tackle as part of the shuffling, and will have a chance to make that job his own now.

Colts trading Delone Carter to Ravens
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 21, 2013, 3:30 PM EDT

‘Tis the season to exchange your spare parts that you were going to cut anyway, if you can get anything of value.

According to Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star, the Colts are trading running back Delone Carter to the Ravens.

Carter wasn’t going to get many touches after the Colts obtained Ahmad Bradshaw, anyway, so a change in scenery can’t hurt. He started three games for the Colts in 2011, but only got 32 rushing attempts last year.

The Colts announced moments later the swap was for Ravens wide receiver David Reed, who showed some flashes as a return man, but has caught five passes in three NFL seasons.

Le’Veon Bell expected to miss 6-8 weeks with foot injury
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 21, 2013, 4:44 PM EDT

The news isn’t great on Steelers rookie running back Le’Veon Bell, but it’s not as bad as it could have been.

Following the reports that Bell suffered a Lisfranc injury, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Bell is expected to miss six weeks. Jason La Canfora of CBS put Bell’s recovery time at six to eight weeks.

If that is indeed Bell’s recovery time, the Steelers wouldn’t exactly be happy about it, but it could be worse: The Lisfranc injury that Bell suffered can cause players to miss much longer than eight weeks.

A second-round draft pick, Bell had been expected to become a major part of the Steelers’ offense. That may still happen, but the Steelers will open the season with Bell on the sideline and Isaac Redman, Jonathan Dwyer and LaRod Stephens-Howling as their running backs.

Report: Seahawks defensive tackle Jordan Hill has partially torn biceps
Posted by Curtis Crabtree on August 22, 2013, 1:25 AM EDT

Defensive tackle Jordan Hill was unable to finish practice with the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday after suffering an apparent injury. Head coach Pete Carroll said afterward that Hill hurt his arm and they needed to wait and see the extent of the injury.

According to Jason Bristol of CBS 21 News in Harrisburg, Pa., Hill could miss 3-6 weeks with a partially torn biceps.

An MRI reportedly was negative for a complete tear and will not require surgery.

Hill was selected by the Seahawks in the third round of April’s NFL Draft out of Penn State. Hill was in the running to possibly start alongside Brandon Mebane in the Seahawks’ base defense. If he is out at least three weeks, he will not be available for the start of the regular season with the Seahawks travel to face the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 8.

Rex Ryan praises Geno Smith’s “great” practice
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 22, 2013, 6:47 AM EDT

The last time we checked in on Rex Ryan’s assessment of Geno Smith’s performance at practice, the Jets’ coach was calling his rookie quarterback “brutal.” This time, Ryan has a much kinder assessment.

Asked how Smith practiced on Wednesday, Ryan answered, “It wasn’t brutal, that’s for sure.”

Ryan then elaborated that Smith had an excellent practice, and that many of Smith’s practices have been very strong.

“That was a great day. I don’t know if that was his best day, because he’s had a lot of good ones, but he had a great one today,” Ryan said.

For his part, Smith said he thinks he’s getting better every day, but that Wednesday’s practice wasn’t necessarily better than any other.

“I wouldn’t say it was my best day. I think, like I said, overall every single day I’ve been getting better. Whether it’s been a good day or a bad day, it’s about progression,” Smith said.

Although Smith says the ankle he injured in the Jets’ first preseason game is still not 100 percent healed, he is expected to start the third preseason game, Saturday against the Giants.

Jets agree to deal with Mohamed Massaquoi
Posted by Josh Alper on August 22, 2013, 12:00 PM EDT

Even if there was more clarity about wide receiver Santonio Holmes‘ status for the regular season, the Jets would have one of the thinnest wide receiver groups in all the NFL.

It’s no surprise, then, that they’ve made a move to add a veteran to the mix. Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that the team has agreed to terms with Mohamed Massaquoi, who was released by the Jaguars earlier this week.

You’ll likely note that the 2013 Jaguars do not appear to be shaping up to be one of the great offensive teams of all time, so the fact that Massaquoi wasn’t able to beat out the likes of Jordan Shipley and Mike Brown for a job isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement of his capabilities. The Jets aren’t any closer to being a great offensive team, though, and Massaquoi should have a chance to earn a spot on a depth chart that doesn’t have many sure bets to stick beyond Stephen Hill and Jeremy Kerley.

Massaquoi was a second-round pick of the Browns in 2009 and caught 118 passes for 1,745 yards and seven touchdowns with Cleveland over the last four years.

49ers sign Seneca Wallace, release Ricardo Lockette
Posted by Josh Alper on August 22, 2013, 2:27 PM EDT

A report on Wednesday indicated that the 49ers had some interest in adding quarterback Seneca Wallace to the mix of players vying to back up Colin Kaepernick this season.

Some interest was an understatement because the 49ers announced Thursday that Wallace is the newest member of the club. They also announced that wide receiver Ricardo Lockette has been released to make room for Wallace on the roster.

Wallace will now enter a competition with Colt McCoy, Scott Tolzien and rookie B.J. Daniels for that backup role. Daniels is probably ticketed for either the third job or the practice squad, but McCoy and Tolzien have struggled during their playing time in the preseason. The fact that Wallace is on the team underlines the team’s lack of satisfaction in those two options, although he’s going to have to pick things up relatively quickly in order to leapfrog the other choices.

Lockette spent last season on the 49ers’ practice squad. He had two catches for 105 yards and a touchdown with the Seahawks in 2011.

Seahawks still waiting for Rice, Carpenter, Avril
Posted by Mike Florio on August 22, 2013, 4:12 PM EDT

As the regular season approaches, the Seattle Seahawks are still waiting for a trio key players to get healthy enough to play.

Coach Pete Carroll indicated at a Thursday press conference that receiver Sidney Rice, guard James Carpenter, and defensive end Cliff Avril remain not ready to play in the preseason.  Seattle plays the Packers on Friday.

Rice, whose knee issues took him to Switzerland for treatment, won’t play. Avril, who has been practicing of late, remains up in the air.  Carpenter still hasn’t returned to practice due to a foot injury.

“He’s getting really close to doing some stuff,” Carroll said. ”We’re hoping he that he’ll practice next week, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that he can play next week.”

Various other Seahawks are banged up, as noted by Jayson Jenks of the Seattle Times.  From cornerback Richard Sherman to cornerback Antoine Winfield to defensive end Bruce Irvin to fullback Michael Robinson, the Seahawks seem to be in midseason form when it comes to guys who aren’t at 100 percent.

Jason Pierre-Paul “getting close” to coming off PUP list
Posted by Josh Alper on August 22, 2013, 4:40 PM EDT

The Giants activated fullback Henry Hynoski from the physically unable to perform list on Thursday, leaving the Giants with a pair of players still waiting for the green light to start practicing with the team.

With all due respect to defensive tackle Markus Kuhn, only one of those two players is of significant interest to the team. That would be defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, who had back surgery late in the offseason and had been trying to work his way into good enough shape to rejoin the team before the start of the regular season.

Coach Tom Coughlin was asked about the timetable for Pierre-Paul (and Kuhn) to return on Thursday and the news was pretty positive. Coughlin said that Pierre-Paul is “getting close” to coming off the list, although he cautioned he’s merely listening to the team’s medical staff on that front.

Pierre-Paul said earlier this summer that he’s not focusing on Week One if it is wiser to wait until later in the season to get back on the field. That’s a wise approach, especially for a part of the body as prone to setbacks as the back, but the Giants would clearly benefit from having their best defensive lineman back on the field as soon as possible.

Musgrave doesn’t rule out a return by Webb to quarterback
Posted by Mike Florio on August 22, 2013, 7:45 PM EDT

After three seasons at quarterback and an abysmal postseason start against the Packers, the Vikings moved Joe Webb from quarterback to receiver. Now, as Webb struggles to make the roster as a wideout, the team could move him back to quarterback.

On Thursday, offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave didn’t rule out a return by Webb to the position he previously played.

“I’d say anything is possible,” Musgrave said, via quotes distributed by the team. ”That’s a lot of speculation here in August. Joe has played quarterback, Joe has played wide receiver. You know we’d have to go to our contingency plans if we ever got into that state of affairs.”

Webb currently is listed as a third-stringer on the team’s depth chart, which means he’s on the bubble when it comes to making the 53-man roster. But Webb would be no higher than No. 3 at quarterback, since the Vikings have Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel.

So it could be that Webb is facing the end of the road in Minnesota. If that happens, look for the Chiefs to give him strong consideration; former Vikings coach Brad Childress is on the staff there, and head coach Andy Reid saw Webb put together a strong performance at quarterback on a Tuesday night in December 2010, in an unlikely win by the Vikings over Reid’s Eagles.

Hopkins still in the first stage of the concussion protocol
Posted by Mike Florio on August 22, 2013, 8:40 PM EDT

Texans rookie receiver DeAndre Hopkins suffered a concussion in the team’s second preseason game.  Five days later, he’s no closer to returning to action.

Coach Gary Kubiak told reporters on Thursday that Hopkins remains at the first level of the league’s concussion protocol.  As a result, Hopkins has multiple hurdles to clear before he’ll be cleared to play, culminating in clearance from an independent neurologist.

“We have not moved forward, Kubiak said.  ”We’re still at phase one.  He feels about the same, so obviously he is not going to play this week.  He’s ruled out this week.  He’s doing better, but the process has not moved past stage one.”

The Texans need the first-rounder to develop into a capable complement to No. 1 wideout Andre Johnson.  And Johnson knows Hopkins is eager.

“He wants to be out there, but he can’t,” Johnson said of Hopkins.  ”He’s doing fine.  He just wants to get back on the field and play football.  You don’t see anything like that coming where you get a concussion or whatever and you have to miss some time.  He just wants to get back out there, out on the field.  It’s just his biggest thing right now.”

Hopkins has 18 days to pass through the various other phases of the concussion protocol, in order to be ready for the season-opening game to be played on the first Monday night of the season.

Jason Smith heading back to the Jets
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 22, 2013, 9:51 PM EDT

This time, the Jets didn’t have to give anything for Jason Smith.

According to Brian Costello of the New York Post, the Jets are bringing back the former No. 2 overall pick in the draft.

They traded for the former Rams tackle last year, swapping out their own underperforming tackle Wayne Hunter for him. But he went to New Orleans this offseason, where he got a chance to compete for the starting left tackle job. It didn’t go well, and the Saints cut him yesterday.

Smith has looked acceptable at times, but hasn’t been able to approach justifying his draft status. But if all the Jets use him for is as an extra blocker in jumbo packages, he’s worth keeping around.

John Fox: Wes Welker will be ready for regular season opener
Posted by Curtis Crabtree on August 23, 2013, 12:34 AM EDT

Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker suffered a sprained ankle in the team’s preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks last Saturday night.

The injury was never considered particularly worrisome and head coach John Fox said Thursday that Welker will be ready for the start of the regular season on Thursday, Sept. 5.

“If we had a game tomorrow, he’d be out there,” Fox said, via Arnie Stapleton of the Associated Press. “This is preseason, we’re trying to get ready for our regular season and yet still hone our skills to get ready for that.”

Welker returned to limited participation in practice on Thursday but he’s not expected to play again this preseason. Welker caught three passes for 31 yards and a touchdown against the Seahawks last week.

D.J. Hayden will make preseason debut for Raiders Friday
Posted by Curtis Crabtree on August 23, 2013, 2:35 AM EDT

It’s been a long road to recovery for Oakland Raiders cornerback D.J. Hayden since an injury to his heart suffered during his senior season at the University of Houston nearly cost him his life.

But the Raiders took a leap of faith in making Hayden a first-round draft pick in April. Friday night against the Chicago Bears he’ll play in live game-action for the first time since his injury.

“I’m looking forward to my first NFL game. Can’t wait to get out there and play,” Hayden said, via Josh Dubow of the Associated Press. “I want to go ahead and shake the rust off. Get wet a little bit. Can’t wait.”

Hayden was injured during a practice in November and required emergency surgery to save his life. He had an additional surgery in May to clear scar tissue from the initial surgery. That procedure kept Hayden sidelined for the start of training camp and limited to a red “no-contact” jersey until last Sunday.

Hayden participated in pregame warm-ups last week against the New Orleans Saints but wasn’t able to play. Now the Raiders are looking forward to finally seeing the player they drafted get to work.

“I just want to see him play football,” head coach Dennis Allen said. “It’s been a while since he’s really had an opportunity to go out and play real football. I’m looking forward to watching him. He’s done some really good things in this camp. He’s got exceptional coverage skills. I think everyone is anxious to see when he has his first real live contact.”
