Dion Jordan wouldn’t be surprised if he missed opener
Posted by Josh Alper on August 23, 2013, 9:37 AM EDT

The Dolphins are reportedly considering keeping defensive end Dion Jordan off the field for a while longer in hopes of avoiding future setbacks from his surgically-repaired right shoulder, a decision that could mean Jordan is in street clothes when the regular season gets underway.

While Jordan admits to being “frustrated” by remaining on the sideline while his teammates are practicing in team drills and playing in preseason games, Jordan says that his first priority is getting healthy. As a result, he won’t be shocked if the regular season kicks off without him.

“Would I be surprised?” Jordan said, via the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “It’s my body so I know when I’m ready to go or when I’m not ready to go. It wouldn’t be a surprise at all.”

While it would obviously be disappointing for the Dolphins to start the season without the third overall pick in the lineup, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Jordan is coming off of a torn labrum, which they knew when they drafted him and which they had to know there was a risk of aggravating the injury once he started playing again. If they could do things over again, they might choose to hold him out of camp a bit longer at the outset, but their best option now is proceeding cautiously so that Jordan misses a game or two rather than a sizable chunk of his rookie season.

DuJuan Harris exits game with apparent knee injury
Posted by Curtis Crabtree on August 23, 2013, 9:50 PM EDT

Aaron Rodgers and DuJuan Harris both exited Friday night’s preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks early but for very different reasons.

Where Rodgers left the game voluntarily after playing just one series for the Green Bay Packers, Harris slowly walked off the field after getting hurt after picking up 11 yards on a screen pass from Graham Harrell with 10 minutes left in the second quarter.

According to Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com, Harris had his right knee wrapped with ice on the Packers’ sideline. Harris started the game for Green Bay for his first preseason action since coming off the physically unable to perform list on Aug. 12. A knee injury was the reason Harris began training camp on the PUP list for Green Bay.

Harris was replaced by Eddie Lacy in the Packers’ backfield. If the injury is serious enough to impact Harris’ availability for the start of the regular season, Lacy could find himself getting the starting nod against the San Francisco 49ers in Week One.

It really has. Should be a fun Live Draft for Hammer's fantasy league tomorrow night. Glad I'm aware of all the injuries.

Packers will release Graham Harrell
Posted by Josh Alper on August 24, 2013, 4:02 PM EDT

Vince Young's performance against the Seahawks on Friday night was good enough to land him the job backing up Aaron Rodgers this season.

That’s one of the conclusions we can draw from the news that Graham Harrell is on his way out of Green Bay. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Harrell is being released as the Packers make their first round of cuts this summer.

Harrell was 6-of-13 for 49 yards on Friday night, continuing a lackluster preseason that was the impetus to bring Young into the fold in the first place. Young, on the other hand, was 6-of-7 for 41 yards and a touchdown while also running for 39 yards on three carries.

Harrell spent the last three years with the Packers, playing in four games and throwing four passes in 2012. With Aaron Rodgers in town, preseason was the chance for Harrell to make his case for both the backup job and for other teams that might be looking for help at the position. He fell short of accomplishing the first half of that, we’ll now see if anyone else wants to bring him onboard.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/giants-2-dbs-hurt-brown-001114993--nfl.html

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez left the team's preseason game against the Giants late in the fourth quarter with what appeared to be a shoulder injury.

Sanchez, in with the backup offense after Geno Smith played into the fourth quarter, rolled out under heavy pressure and completed a 23-yard pass to Mohamed Massaquoi before having his right shoulder slammed into by Marvin Austin with 5:40 left in the game.

Sanchez stayed on the turf for a few moments as the team's trainers ran out to check on him. The quarterback got up on his own and flexed his right arm and hand as he headed to the sideline.

He took one practice throw on the sideline and appeared to shake his head, as if to say, ''No.'' Trainers took Sanchez's jersey and pads off on the sideline, and then wrapped his shoulder in ice before taking him to the locker room.

The team had no immediate word on the nature or severity of Sanchez's injury.

Redskins lose Richard Crawford for the season
Posted by Mike Florio on August 24, 2013, 9:21 PM EDT

If the main goal for the preseason is to keep players healthy, the Redskins lost on Saturday.

Gone for the year is cornerback and punt returner Richard Crawford. Via Rich Tandler of CSNWashington.com, coach Mike Shanahan announced the injury after Saturday’s game against the Bills.

Specifically, Crawford has suffered a torn LCL and possibly a torn ACL in his knee. The injury happened while Crawford was returning a punt late in the first quarter of the 30-7 win.

A seventh-round pick in 2012 from SMU, Crawford became the primary punt returner late in the 2012 season. He generated a 19.5-yard average on eight returns, with a long of 64 yards.

Per Tandler, Chris Thompson, Skye Dawson, and Nick Williams likely will compete for the job. Thompson generated 48 return yards on three returns in place of Crawford.

Cardinals guard Jonathan Cooper has broken leg
Posted by Mike Wilkening on August 25, 2013, 2:02 AM EDT

The Cardinals have lost their first-round pick indefinitely.

Rookie left guard Jonathan Cooper suffered a broken leg in the third quarter of Saturday night’s exhibition loss to San Diego, coach Bruce Arians said, according to multiple reports. Per multiple media outlets, Cooper has a broken fibula.

Cooper was injured when he was blocking downfield on a running play. As running back Alfonso Smith was being tackled, the collision took out Cooper, who was not facing the play.

If the Cardinals believe there’s a chance Cooper could heal in time to return in 2013, the club could place him on injured reserve with the option to activate him later in the campaign. According to Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com, Arians indicated he hopes Cooper will be able to play this season.

Cooper was one of several key Cardinals who left Saturday’s game with injuries. Arians, per the club’s official Twitter feed, said that running back Rashard Mendenhall will have tests on his right knee. Also, nose tackle Dan Williams and tight end Rob Housler have ankle injuries, with Housler’s injury a high-ankle sprain, Arians said, according to the club.

Nothing definitive yet on Sanchez
Posted by Mike Florio on August 25, 2013, 8:37 AM EDT

There’s nothing definitive yet regarding the shoulder injury suffered last night by Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, per a source with knowledge of the situation. If Sanchez isn’t available to play, the outlook for coach Rex Ryan could be much more definitive.

Based on Saturday night’s preseason game against the Jets, a season with Geno Smith as the starter will likely be bad enough to get Ryan fired.

Smith, who threw three interceptions, had apparently lost the quarterback competition to Sanchez. But Ryan nevertheless put Sanchez in the game late, exposing his $8.25 million starter-by-default to the injury he suffered.

Per Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com, Sanchez didn’t want to play with backups. And it appeared that Matt Simms would enter the game instead of Sanchez, before Simms took a seat and Sanchez rushed through a warmup and hit the field.

An executive from an opposing team called it, via Cimini, “gross mismanagement” of the quarterback position.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, who has called the quarterback competition a “charade” and “farcical,” opines that Ryan “took ineptitude and incompetence to new heights with a boneheaded decision” to play Sanchez.

Making the decision to play Sanchez even more bizarre is the fact that Ryan presumably was the guy who wanted to start the season with Sanchez, while the front office had been lobbying for Smith. So with Sanchez having the job secured, Ryan merely needed to keep Sanchez healthy — by keeping him out of the game.

Now, Ryan may be on his way to being out of the game. Or, at a minimum, out of New York.

And we’re still two weeks away from the start of the regular season.

But I can't keep up with all the injuries!!

When I make a boneheaded move, feel free to point it out.

Giants Safety Stevie Brown done for the year. This really sucks for the Giants as this guy became one of the premier ballhawks in the entire league. Hope he makes a full recovery:

Buffalo made a couple of QB moves today.

from cbssports.com:

With injuries to quarterbacks E.J. Manuel and Kevin Kolb, and only undrafted rookie free-agent Jeff Tuel remaining on the depth chart, the Bills signed Matt Leinart Sunday, the team announced.
He will wear No. 7.

To add more depth, the Bills also acquirted quarterback Thaddeus Lewis via a trade with the Lions, PFT reports. Lewis played with the Browns last season where he started one game.

Manuel, meanwhile, is sidelined with a minor knee injury, and Kolb suffered concussion-like symptoms in Saturday's loss to the Redskins.

Leinart, the Cardinals' 2006 first-round pick, has had a disappointing NFL career. Arizona released him after four seasons, and Leinart spent 2010-2011 as a backup with the Texans, before serving in that same capacity with the Raiders last season.

Bills coach Doug Marrone said Saturday that he hopes Manuel, the team's first-round pick in April, is ready for the regular-season opener against the Patriots in two weeks, but there has been no word on how long Kolb could be sidelined.

Pryor to start for Raiders Thursday, Flynn resting with elbow tendonitis
Posted by Josh Alper on August 25, 2013, 4:43 PM EDT

Last year, Matt Flynn entered training camp with a shot at the starting job only to lose it to a quarterback who outplayed him in the preseason by making plays with both his arm and his legs while Flynn struggled with an elbow injury.

History may be repeating itself. Scott Bair of CSN Bay Area reports that Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Sunday that the team will be resting Flynn because of elbow tendonitis and that Terrelle Pryor will start the team’s preseason finale against the Seahawks.

The elbow issue is one that plagued Flynn in Seattle around this time last year, giving Russell Wilson more of an opportunity to assert his stake to the starting job. Pryor will get the same chance this year and a strong week of practice before a good game against Seattle could mean that Flynn will be on the sideline again come the first week of the regular season.

The Raiders will also be taking a look at a new left tackle on Thursday. Second-round pick Menelik Watson, who played right tackle at Florida State, will get the start as the team tries to find a competent placeholder until Jared Veldheer can return.
