Bills planning to start Jeff Tuel in Week One
Posted by Josh Alper on August 26, 2013, 12:48 PM EDT

The Bills went into camp with two quarterbacks competing for the starting job, but, as of now, they aren’t planning to start either one of them against the Patriots on September 8.

Bills coach Doug Marrone said Monday that the plan right now is for Jeff Tuel to start against New England while E.J. Manuel continues recovering from knee surgery and Kevin Kolb deals with a concussion. Marrone confirmed that diagnosis for Kolb, but said that speculation about it being career-threatening is premature as the team and Kolb are concentrating on recovery at the moment.

Going with Tuel over the newly arrived Matt Leinart or Thad Lewis makes sense as Tuel has spent the entire offseason working in the offense and has had some good moments in his preseason appearances. But, as Marrone said with some understatment, “obviously this wasn’t the plan” for the 2013 season in Buffalo.

That explains why Marrone is holding out hope that Manuel can make it back in time for the game against the Patriots, but reality is forcing the team to make plans that they probably didn’t contemplate when setting their sights on the year to come.

Broken shoulder the latest setback for Moeaki
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 26, 2013, 1:51 PM EDT

It would be tempting to say Chiefs tight end Tony Moeaki can’t catch a break.

But actually, he catches too many of them.

According to Randy Covitz of the Kansas City Star, Moeaki suffered a shoulder fracture in Saturday night’s preseason game, and there’s no word on how long he’ll be out.

Late preseason injuries are nothing new for Moeaki, who missed the 2011 season after blowing out his knee in the last preseason game.

He wasn’t a stranger to injuries in college either, but has been a productive player when well. The Chiefs signed Anthony Fasano in free agency and drafted Travis Kelce, so it won’t impact the team as much this time through.

But it’s another blow for a player who showed considerable promise.

Source: Will Smith is done for the year with knee injury
Posted by Mike Florio on August 26, 2013, 2:22 PM EDT

It’ll be much harder for the Saints to install a 3-4 defense if they don’t have guys who can play.

Per a league source, linebacker Will Smith is out for the year with a knee injury suffered Sunday against the Texans.

The precise injury isn’t known, but for Saints fans it doesn’t matter. The first year of the Rob Ryan experiment will begin with both Victor Butler and Smith done for the duration.

The injury to Smith, a first-round pick in 2004 who was moving from defensive end in the 4-3 to outside linebacker in the 3-4, means that Martez Wilson will be asked to step up. Wilson returned to practice a couple of weeks ago after injuring an elbow early in camp.

The situation likely will prompt the Saints to keep an extra close eye on the waiver wire as teams cut to 53 players.

Cliff Avril out indefinitely with hamstring injury
Posted by Josh Alper on August 26, 2013, 2:42 PM EDT

Defensive end Cliff Avril’s first offseason with the Seahawks has seen him spend more time with the trainers than anyone in Seattle would have liked when they signed him as a free agent.

Avril dealt with an injured foot during the spring and he spent a fair chunk of training camp on the sideline with a hamstring injury. He’s now going to miss time after aggravating that hamstring injury during warmups before last week’s game against the Packers. How much time? Coach Pete Carroll said Monday during an interview with 710 ESPN that he isn’t sure.

“We don’t know when he’s going to get back,” Carroll said.

The Seahawks have a fair amount of depth on the defensive line, so they won’t be totally lost should Avril’s absence extend into the regular season. One player who might see his prospects for playing time improve with Avril out of the lineup is Benson Mayowa. Mayowa, an undrafted free agent, has been impressive this summer and may now have a chance to extend his run into the fall.

Vikings’ Jerome Felton suspended three games
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 26, 2013, 3:40 PM EDT

Jerome Felton, the Vikings’ starting fullback, will miss the first three games of the regular season.

The NFL has announced that Felton is suspended three games for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.

Felton, who was arrested for drunk driving last year, is Adrian Peterson’s lead blocker when the Vikings line up in the I formation. He played in all 16 games for the Vikings last season, starting seven.

Although Felton will be eligible to play in Thursday’s preseason finale, he must leave the team by Saturday and will not be permitted back at practice until Monday, September 23, following Minnesota’s Week 3 game against the Browns.

Felton was a Pro Bowler last year and signed a three-year, $7.5 million contract with the Vikings this year.

49ers trade Parys Haralson to Saints
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 26, 2013, 9:01 PM EDT

Parys Haralson is heading from San Francisco to New Orleans.

Haralson has been traded by the 49ers to the Saints, according to the San Jose Mercury News. There’s no immediate word on what the Saints gave up to acquire Haralson.

Haralson did not speak to reporters, but teammates confirmed that they had learned he was on the way to the Saints.

“He was a good mentor, taught me a lot and best of luck to him in New Orleans,” Aldon Smith said.

Haralson has spent his entire career in San Francisco since the 49ers chose him in the fifth round of the 2006 NFL draft. He started all 16 games in 2011 but missed the entire 2012 season with a torn triceps tendon.

In New Orleans, Haralson is expected to step in and fill the starting outside linebacker spot vacated by Will Smith, who suffered a season-ending injury on Saturday.

Stewart seeing ankle specialist today
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 27, 2013, 6:55 AM EDT

When most players have serious foot and ankle problems, they get on a plane to go see Dr. Robert Anderson.

Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart just has to go down the hall, since Anderson’s one of the Panthers’ team doctors.

According to Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer, Stewart is seeing Anderson this morning, at which point the Panthers will know better whether the sixth-year running back is going to be ready for the regular season.

“It’s one of those things, he’s still going through a couple other things with the doctor,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “It’s one of those things that we’re just waiting to get the answer.”

Since Stewart hasn’t practiced this offseason, he’s still eligible for reserve/PUP, which would allow him to return after the first six weeks.

The Panthers could use him, especially with a renewed interest in running the ball with their running backs instead of the quarterback this year.

Floyd returns to practice for Chargers
Posted by Mike Florio on August 27, 2013, 7:45 AM EDT

Good news, Chargers fans.  The journeyman receiver who has become the No. 1 wideout by default has returned to practice two weeks after injuring his knee.

Hooray?

Veteran Malcom Floyd, whose nine-year career has never resulted in a 900-yard season, joined the team Monday after banging the knee in a collision with cornerback Shareece Floyd.

“He is coming along good,” coach Mike McCoy told reporters, via quotes distributed by the team. “He was out there for some of our individual periods and I think he snuck in to the team period for a rep or two. He is doing a nice job and we will take it one day at a time.  We’ll do some individual work with him and Philip [Rivers].  He ran a lot last week, so we’ll keep moving forward with him.”

McCoy was noncommittal regarding Floyd’s availability for Week One.

“I think he should be, but we’ll see how he progresses during practice,” McCoy said.

The Chargers’ other starting wideout — Eddie Royal — continues to be out with a concussion.

The fact that Floyd and Royal are Philip Rivers‘ starting wideouts could make the veteran quarterback feel like he has a concussion, too.

Packers RB Harris out for year with knee injury
By GENARO C. ARMAS (AP Sports Writer) | The Associated Press – 1 hour 48 minutes ago

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Packers starting running back DuJuan Harris is out for the year after injuring his right knee last week against the Seahawks.

Harris said Tuesday he hurt the patella tendon and hoped to have surgery soon as he heads to injured reserve status. He hurt the same knee during the offseason.

''It is what it is, you know? It's something I've got to go through and must be done,'' said Harris, who appeared to be in good spirits at his locker given the prognosis.

The knee appeared to bother Harris after he was flipped over near the sideline by a defender during the 17-10 preseason loss Friday night to Seattle. Harris said the knee was troubling him before that play.

''I kind of knew it. But I didn't think it was going to be season-over trouble,'' he said. ''But it's for the best. If it's for the best and better long-term, hey, I'm all for it.''

Coach Mike McCarthy was a big supporter after the running back secured the starting job down the stretch last season with 157 yards and two touchdowns in four games. Harris was signed to the practice squad in October and joined the active roster in December following a slew of injuries in the backfield.

But 2013 has been tough without Harris ever seeing a regular season snap.

In June, a team physical revealed Harris had a fist-sized cyst on his lung. It was drained and removed the next day, and Harris returned home the following day. It was the only other time he had undergone surgery in his career.

The loss of Harris potentially means more carries for second-round draft pick Eddie Lacy out of Alabama. He and Harris were being counted on to solidify the running game.

''It sucks, honestly,'' All-Pro guard Josh Sitton said about losing Harris. ''He was going to be a big part of this offense. You've got to move on ... The other guys will step up and play. Eddie (Lacy) is going to be a big factor for us.''

Mike Florio is such an idiot. Floyd has played for exactly one team. He's hardly a "journeyman".

Some US sports writers actually use the term " journeyman " to describe someone has all the tools to be a star but has not put them together to become a star. I do agree with you though - to me a journeyman refers to a guy that has moved around a few times in his career.

Patriots cut Ras-I Dowling
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 28, 2013, 4:57 PM EDT

In a surprise move, the Patriots have cut cornerback Ras-I Dowling.

Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report that the Patriots made the move, and it was confirmed on the league’s transaction wire on Wednesday afternoon.

Heading into the 2011 NFL draft, the Patriots liked Dowling so much that they took him with the first pick in the second round (a pick they had previously acquired in a trade with the Panthers). And Dowling showed early promise, starting the first two games of the season.

But Dowling suffered a hip injury in Week Two of his rookie year and missed the rest of the season, and Dowling’s 2012 season was also cut short because of an injury, this time a torn muscle in his thigh. Through two seasons Dowling has played in only nine games.

Now Dowling is done in New England.
