Speculation persists that Ansah has a concussion
Posted by Mike Florio on August 29, 2013, 7:13 AM EDT

The Lions still aren’t saying whether rookie defensive end Ziggy Ansah suffered a concussion at some point in the past week or so. But there’s still no sign of the fifth overall pick in the draft.

Via Josh Katzenstein of the Detroit News, the latest evidence comes via Ansah’s absence from the team’s annual kickoff luncheon on Wednesday afternoon.

Ansah has missed three straight practices, and coach Jim Schwartz has exercised his prerogative to say nothing about any player injury prior to the Wednesday preceding the regular-season opener.

When it comes to concussions, maybe the NFL should have a different approach. Last year, the Redskins were able to conceal a concussion sustained by linebacker London Fletcher. While the rules permit concealment of any and all preseason injuries, external scrutiny of the manner in which teams and players handle concussions is necessary, given the way concussions allegedly, reportedly, and/or actually have been mishandled in the past.

This isn’t about strategic considerations or ensuring a level playing field for gamblers. Concussions have become one of the most significant injuries in all of football. The NFL fails in its objective to encourage openness and candor on concussions at all levels of football by giving its teams the ability in the preseason to hide the fact that a player has suffered one.

Falcons hope Roddy White will be back for Week One
Posted by Mike Florio on August 29, 2013, 8:17 AM EDT

Falcons receiver Roddy White has had plenty of injuries since he entered the NFL as one of the few non-busts in round one of the 2005 draft.  And White has never missed a regular-season game.

The Falcons don’t expect that streak of 128 straight appearances to end in Week One of the 2013 season, when they face the Saints in New Orleans.

Via D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, G.M. Thomas Dimitroff said Wednesday that the team hopes White will be available for the September 8 game. Coach Mike Smith has been more direct; per Ledbetter, Smith said White will be available for Week One.

Smith also disputed a report that White’s sprained ankle is of the “high” variety, which typically is more serious than a normal ankle sprain.

If White can’t play, veteran Harry Douglas and up-and-comer Drew Davis, undrafted out of Oregon in 2012, will get more opportunities. But it would be a major surprise, based on White’s history, if he doesn’t play.

Seneca Wallace was a No Show at todays team meeting. I guess he saw the writing on the wall.

Giants RB Andre Brown suffers broken left leg
Lindsay H. Jones, USA TODAY Sports 10:06 p.m. EDT August 29, 2013

New York Giants running back Andre Brown limped off the field and into the locker room late in the second quarter of the Giants' preseason finale Thursday night, where X-Rays revealed Brown had suffered a broken left leg.

Brown's injury is a blow to the Giants' offense, who had planned to use Brown in tandem with starter David Wilson.

Brown also broke his left leg in 2012.

With Brown out, the Giants will look to Da'Rel Scott or Ryan Torain to serve as Wilson's backup. Scott, a seventh-round pick in 2011, spent most of last season on injured reserve with a knee injury. Torain played in two games for the Giants last year after spending three seasons with the Redskins and

Leinart bids farewell to the Bills
Posted by Mike Florio on August 30, 2013, 10:55 AM EDT

Matt Leinart was right.

He knew the Turk was coming. And the Turk apparently has arrived.  Courtesy of Leinart’s Twitter feed.

“Tough game. Tough situation. No excuses. Thanks [sic] you to the Bills organization!” Leinart said, which most likely means his five-day stint with the quarterback-strapped team has ended.

So why did Leinart do it? It was, if nothing else, a chance to generate some game film and to remain in the conversation for the needs that will arise once quarterbacks get injured during the season.

And here’s where we finally share a snarky (sort of) comment made earlier during camp by Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, regarding the fact that Leinart won the Heisman over Peterson in 2004.

“I look at that [Heisman] trophy now and knowing that Matt Leinart has it, with how his career went, I would rather him have it,” Peterson said. ”At least he has something positive to look back on and say, ‘I won the Heisman.’”

Good effort, but not quite as biting as Maurice Jones-Drew saying that half the guys drafted before him (which includes Leinart) now work at Target.

Hopefully, Leinart didn’t channel Johnny Paycheck on his way through the red-framed sliding-glass doors.

Andre Brown is expected to miss 4-6 weeks
Posted by Mike Florio on August 30, 2013, 11:35 AM EDT

Giants running back Andre Brown downplayed the “tiny little crack” in his leg, suffered during Thursday night’s preseason finale against the Patriots.

“I can come back from this … in a couple weeks,” Brown said after the game.

The more accurate assessment, per a league source with knowledge of the situation, is that Brown will miss 4-6 weeks. Which means that David Wilson will get more opportunities to not fumble.

It also bumps up 2011 seventh-rounder Da’Rel Scott and veteran Ryan Torain.

Brown, who signed a one-year restricted free agency tender, needs a big year to cash in with the Giants or someone else. Then again, not many running backs ever really cash in via free agency in today’s NFL.

Report: Patriots release tight ends Jake Ballard and Daniel Fells
By John Breech | CBSSports.com
August 30, 2013 1:57 pm ET

Maybe the Patriots don't plan to use any tight ends at all this season.

Despite the fact that Rob Gronkowski's health is still up in the air, New England has cut two of the five tight ends on their roster. Both Jake Ballard and Daniel Fells have been released, according to NFL.com.

Fells release is probably the more surprising one, considering the sixth-year tight end signed a three-year, $5.25 million deal in March 2012.

With Fells and Ballard gone, that leaves New England with Gronkowski, Zach Sudfeld and Michael Hoomanawanui as the only tight ends on the roster.

Sudfeld may be the reason coach Bill Belichick felt comfortable dumping Fells and Ballard. The rookie tight end, who signed as an undrafted free agent in May, finished the preseason with eight catches for 101 yards and a touchdown, leading Ben Volin of the Boston Globe to calling him 'Baby Gronk.'

As for Gronkowski, Patriots beat writer Tom Curran believes that the end of September is still the target date for his return.

Well, Ballard worked out well for Belichick.

Losing Andre Brown hurts the Giants, but I am now convinced that he'll never be healthy. They should either use Michael Cox (7th round pick this year who has looked good) or pick up Willis McGahee. I've heard the names Michael Turner and Brandon Jacobs but they are both toast and don't want either. D'Rell Scott cannot pass block and Ryan Torain is not good.
I suppose David Wilson will be the bellcow now.

Wallace not retiring after all
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Seneca Wallace isn't retiring, his agent said on Friday. 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said that Wallace neglected to play in Thursday's game against the San Diego Chargers because he was done with football, but Wallace's agent says otherwise. It sounds like Wallace didn't want to be the last quarterback playing in the preseason game, and that he doesn't want to be the third man on the depth chart in San Francisco or, presumably, anywhere.

A move that makes little sense. They had long-time backup Graham Harrell and ditched him a few weeks ago. I truly hope Rodgers goes down this year and they end up fucked. I only drafted Lacy so it would actually work out well for me.:D

Chiefs trade Edgar Jones to Cowboys
Posted by Mike Wilkening on August 31, 2013, 10:40 PM EDT

The Cowboys have acquired outside linebacker Edgar Jones from Kansas City, the Chiefs said on their website on Saturday night.

Kansas City will receive a draft pick from Dallas, but the exact compensation has not been disclosed.

Jones (6-3, 262) recorded seven special teams tackles for Kansas City in 2012. He previously had stints with Baltimore and Washington.

Jones may project as a backup defensive end or strong-side linebacker in Dallas’ 4-3 defense, and he surely would be a contributor on special teams.

The trade leaves the Chiefs with 52 players, one short of the 53-player limit.

Seahawks acquire some defensive tackle help, from Jacksonville
Posted by Mike Florio on September 1, 2013, 8:01 AM EDT

When an assistant coach leaves one team to become the head coach of another, players from the first team sometimes join the new coach of the second team.  For the Seahawks and Jaguars, the pipeline operated on Saturday in reverse.

The Jaguars, now coached by former Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, sent defensive tackle D’Anthony Smith to Seattle for an undisclosed future draft choice.

Smith arrived in Jacksonville via round three of the 2010 draft.  He spent his first two NFL seasons on injured reserve, then played in eight games last year before landing on IR again in November, this time with a head injury (a/k/a concussion-like symptoms a/k/a a concussion).

The trade, like all trades, hinges on Smith passing a physical.

Bengals, Atkins work out long-term deal
Posted by Mike Florio on September 2, 2013, 10:00 AM EDT

Anyone who has watched Hard Knocks knows that the Bengals really like defensive tackle Geno Atkins. They’ve now put Mike Brown’s money where the coaches’ mouths are.

Per a league source, the Bengals and Atkins have agreed to terms on a five-year, $55 million deal extension.

The fourth-round pick in 2010, who was due to be an unrestricted free agent after the season, will earn $22 million over the next six months. He’ll likewise get $31 million over the first three years.

The contract currently is believed to be the second highest in NFL history for a defensive tackle, behind only Haloti Ngata’s five-year, $61 million deal.
