Pretty big news of today is that the Pats couldn't agree to terms with Welker, and he was offered and accepted a two year, $12M deal to sign with the Broncos.

Two years, $12 million for Welker
Posted by Josh Alper on March 13, 2013, 5:09 PM EDT

The deal is done and Wes Welker is a Bronco, leaving only the question of what it cost to get him to trade in Tom Brady for Peyton Manning.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that it is a two-year, $12 million deal for Welker. That supports the evidence that this isn’t a great market for slot receivers and it also supports the notion that there wasn’t much reason for the Patriots to use their franchise tag on Welker this year.

It would have cost $11.4 million to keep Welker via the tag, just a bit less than what the Broncos are paying for two years of his services. It would seem that the Patriots didn’t even think he was worth that much, given reports earlier on Wednesday that their offer prompted Welker to look elsewhere for a better deal and by reports later Wednesday that the Pats passed on an opportunity to up their offer after Welker spoke to Denver.

I'm admittedly a Peter King reader but his column sums up how I feel about the situation pretty well-Welker should have been retained for Brady: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/nfl/news/20130313/peter-king-on-welker/?sct=hp_t11_a9&eref=sihp

Patriots, Danny Amendola agree to five-year, $31 million deal
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 13, 2013, 7:34 PM EDT

The loss of Wes Welker created a need at receiver for the Patriots, and they didn’t take long to fill it.

The Patriots have reached an agreement on a five-year, $31 million deal with receiver Danny Amendola, with $10 million guaranteed, a source tells PFT.

Amendola was widely thought to be a target for the Patriots, whose offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels, had previously coached him in St. Louis. Amendola’s familiarity with McDaniels could make him a quick study in New England’s passing game.

Still, there are questions about Amendola’s durability — he has played in only 12 games in the last two seasons — and Amendola has never had the kind of production that Welker had. Amendola’s career best season was 85 catches for 689 yards in 2010; Welker has had five different seasons with more than 110 catches and more than 1,100 receiving yards.

But Welker is done in New England. And Tom Brady will have the next six months to develop a rapport with Amendola before the season starts.

I'm glad Amendola is outta the NFC West.He was a pain in the butt to the Niners.

Huh?  I read that he signed a 2 year deal with the Seahawks.

The quiet has ended for Cliff Avril.
According to Albert Breer of the NFL Network, the Lions pass-rusher has agreed to a new deal with the Seahawks. He’s en route to the Pacific Northwest, and will sign his deal when he arrives.
The addition is huge for the Seahawks, whose defense changed when defensive end Chris Clemons blew out his knee in the playoff win over the Redskins.
Adding Avril gives them a solid pass-rush presence, the same kind of boost they gave their offense with the trade for Percy Harvin.

I stand corrected.

Hell yes, Colts nag Ricky Jean-Francios. They've addressed the biggest key issues here. DT, RT, G, CB and Safety. The only thing left is WR. I'm thinking they may just deal with that during the draft.

Falcons, Steven Jackson agree to terms
Posted by Josh Alper on March 14, 2013, 4:30 PM EDT

When the Falcons released running back Michael Turner, Steven Jackson was believed to be their choice to replace him.

It took a couple days and some rumored interest from the Packers, but the Falcons got their man. Adam Schefter of ESPN broke the news that Jackson and the Falcons have agreed to terms on a contract that will bring the NFL’s leading active rusher to Atlanta.

Jackson’s a clear upgrade on Turner and he’s been a strong receiver throughout his career, something that could add another wrinkle to a Falcons offense that looks even better than the one that helped them to the NFC Championship Game last year. With Tony Gonzalez coming back, the Falcons appear to be loading up for a run at the Super Bowl.

They’ll need to do some work on defense to get there, namely a pass rusher to replace the departed John Abraham and some secondary help whether or not they bring back Brent Grimes. Jackson’s a big get for them, though, and should be a very good fit in an offense that could have used his skills last season.

Matt Cassel makes quick move to Vikings
Posted by Darin Gantt on March 14, 2013, 3:29 PM EDT

The Vikings knew they needed a better second option at quarterback, so they didn’t want to wait.

According to FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer, the Vikings have apparently secured a deal with former Chiefs starter Matt Cassel.

The pace of the move underlines just how seriously they wanted someone better than Joe Webb behind Christian Ponder, and how much competition there was for Cassel.

After the beating he took in Kansas City, he’s also not the kind of guy who would be bucking for the starting job, old enough to know his role behind Ponder and not create pressure.
