Falcons, Steven Jackson agree to terms
Posted by Josh Alper on March 14, 2013, 4:30 PM EDT

When the Falcons released running back Michael Turner, Steven Jackson was believed to be their choice to replace him.

It took a couple days and some rumored interest from the Packers, but the Falcons got their man. Adam Schefter of ESPN broke the news that Jackson and the Falcons have agreed to terms on a contract that will bring the NFL’s leading active rusher to Atlanta.

Jackson’s a clear upgrade on Turner and he’s been a strong receiver throughout his career, something that could add another wrinkle to a Falcons offense that looks even better than the one that helped them to the NFC Championship Game last year. With Tony Gonzalez coming back, the Falcons appear to be loading up for a run at the Super Bowl.

They’ll need to do some work on defense to get there, namely a pass rusher to replace the departed John Abraham and some secondary help whether or not they bring back Brent Grimes. Jackson’s a big get for them, though, and should be a very good fit in an offense that could have used his skills last season.

Jackson did not put up much better stats than Turner. last year.  I have been on record as saying Jackson is a solid back but sometimes I think people assume he puts up monster years which is not true.

He's still a clear upgrade because he's so much more versatile and still has power. He will fit well with that offense.

^ Yep, he's a much better receiving back and is an outstanding blocker.

Patriots, Danny Amendola agree to five-year, $31 million deal
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 13, 2013, 7:34 PM EDT

The loss of Wes Welker created a need at receiver for the Patriots, and they didn’t take long to fill it.

The Patriots have reached an agreement on a five-year, $31 million deal with receiver Danny Amendola, with $10 million guaranteed, a source tells PFT.

Amendola was widely thought to be a target for the Patriots, whose offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels, had previously coached him in St. Louis. Amendola’s familiarity with McDaniels could make him a quick study in New England’s passing game.

Still, there are questions about Amendola’s durability — he has played in only 12 games in the last two seasons — and Amendola has never had the kind of production that Welker had. Amendola’s career best season was 85 catches for 689 yards in 2010; Welker has had five different seasons with more than 110 catches and more than 1,100 receiving yards.

But Welker is done in New England. And Tom Brady will have the next six months to develop a rapport with Amendola before the season starts.

I HATE that Welker will be gone, but Amendola could be a suitable replacement.  His major issue is that he gets hurt too much.  Welker was pretty healthy during his time with the Pats.  Don't forget about Hernandez.  With Gronk coming back, Hernandez's role could be re-defined.

I can't believe they paid that amount to a guy that stays hurt as often as AmIHurtYet.  And Gronk can't seem to stay healthy either.

Thoughts:
Welker move is stupid for Pats. Danny Infirmary Amendola is even a worse move. Bill's fucking up.

Mike Wallace is a terrible signing for the money. He's way overrated.

Love the moves that the Chiefs have made.

The Seahawks and Niners are running away with best offseason so far, but remember, injuries hit and you still have to play the season. Everyone thought that GB was the team to beat 2 years ago without competition.

S-Jax has much more left in the tank than Turner. Turner is done.

Can the Jets seriously be any more idiotic? First David Garrard and know they're considering Kevin Kolb? How do you fans stick with that shithole of a team?

Chargers sign Danny Woodhead
Posted by Josh Alper on March 15, 2013, 2:23 PM EDT

The Patriots held onto cornerback Kyle Arrington, but another one of the team’s free agents has flown the coop.

Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com reports that running back Danny Woodhead has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Chargers. He’ll join Ryan Mathews in the Chargers backfield and, if past usage is any indication, he’ll also play a role as a receiver for Philip Rivers. If things work out perfectly, he’ll give San Diego’s offense some of what they’ve missed since Darren Sproles left for New Orleans and provide new head coach Mike McCoy with a versatile weapon on offense.

New England was thought to have some interest in a Woodhead return, but the addition of Leon Washington might have taken up the roster spot and role that Woodhead filled in recent seasons. With Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen also in New England, heading to San Diego probably offered Woodhead a shot at more playing time anyway in 2013.

Regardless of who winds up replacing him, the departure of Woodhead is another sign that the Patriots are looking to shuffle the deck this season after falling short in the AFC Championship Game.

UPDATE 2:25 p.m. ET: The Chargers have announced the deal.

After having his contract called "out of whack" by team president John Elway, Denver Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil agreed to reduce his salary.

Dumervil's 2013 salary was cut from $12 million to $8 million, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Had Dumervil not agreed to the restructured deal by 4 p.m. ET, he faced the prospect of getting released.

Dumervil's deal also includes a $3.5 million guarantee on the second day of the league year in 2014.

"It's not all about dollars. But when it's way out of whack? Then it's so out of whack that you've got to say: That [salary] can't be it," Elway had said Thursday, according to the Denver Post. "Especially when you look at the market and what's out there now. It's so far out of whack. Hopefully, he realizes that."

Dumervil signed a six-year, $61.5 million contract in 2010 when Josh McDaniels was coaching the team and before Elway joined the Denver front office.

Dumervil had 11 sacks last season, second on the team behind Von Miller. Dumervil led the league with 17 sacks in 2009.

The Broncos need more cap space while trying to shore up their interior defensive line, cornerback and running back positions. Peyton Manning will earn $20 million in 2013, and if the Broncos had Dumervil play at his current number, those two would've accounted for more than one-quarter of their cap space.

Among the pass-rushers on the market this season include Manning's former teammate with the Colts, Dwight Freeney.

Dumervil has been released: http://tracking.si.com/2013/03/15/broncos-dumervil-contract-pay-cut/?sct=hp_t2_a6&eref=sihp

Watch, the Niners will go after him.

Seriously, Indianapolis must be sorry they've signed all the guys they did when they could now have this guy.

I sure hope the Niners jump on Denver's mistake.

I really like that guy. He's talented, but also a stand up guy with a great attitude. Someone is going to receive a nice gift with him.

Another few really bad moves:

Arizona signs former SD CB Antone Cason=the softest DB I've seen since Asante Samuel.

Atlanta resigns inept LT Sam Baker. He's never been good.
