Williams was playing decently, but Danny Trevathan really stepped up when he was in there for Denver.

Report: Texans agree to terms with punter Shane Lechler
Posted by Curtis Crabtree on March 22, 2013, 9:54 PM EDT

For the first time in his 13-year NFL career, Shane Lechler will not be a member of the Oakland Raiders next season.

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, Lechler has agreed to terms on a new deal with the Houston Texans. Per Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, the contract is a three-year deal worth $5.5 million with a $1 million signing bonus.

Lechler has long been considered among the top punters in the league and is a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and nine-time All-Pro. He is also currently the NFL’s all-time leader in career punting average with 47.5 yards per punt.

The Texans had a strong punter in Donnie Jones last season, who averaged 47.2 yards per punt with 28 downed inside the 20, but Lechler is among the best to ever play the position in the league.

Bears sign Tom Zbikowski
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 23, 2013, 3:27 PM EDT

Tom Zbikowski is heading home to Chicago.

Zbikowski, a free agent safety who was born and raised in the Chicago area, has agreed to a one-year contract with the Bears.

A 2008 third-round draft pick of the Ravens out of Notre Dame, Zbikowski played four seasons for the Ravens before following his old defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano to Indianapolis and signing with the Colts last year. Zbikowski was a starter for the first 11 games of last year in Indianapolis before his season was cut short by a knee injury.

Zbikowski will most likely back up Major Wright at strong safety in the Bears’ secondary.

Dumervil’s base deal is five years, $26 million
Posted by Mike Florio on March 24, 2013, 5:30 PM EDT

When it comes to the initial reports regarding the value of linebacker (once again) Elvis Dumervil’s five-year deal in Baltimore, the key words are “up to.”

Adam Schefter of ESPN has reported that the contract is worth “up to” $35 million.  And while we have no reason to dispute that, the contract has a base value of $26 million, per a source with knowledge of the deal.

Dumervil will, as others have reported, earn $8.5 million in 2013, with a cap number of only $2.5 million.  This means that, at some point, the Ravens will carry an extra $6 million on future salary cap(s) under Dumervil’s name.

And so the base deal ends up being 64 percent of the five-year, $40.5 million contract linebacker Paul Kruger signed in Cleveland.  Even if Dumervil hits every incentive and earns an extra $9 million, the Ravens still got Dumervil at $5.5 million cheaper than Kruger would have cost.

Bears add another linebacker not named Urlacher
Posted by Mike Florio on March 24, 2013, 3:56 PM EDT

With the Bears losing linebacker Nick Roach in free agency and declaring that they won’t be bringing back linebacker Brian Urlacher, the Monsters of the Midway need some men for the middle level of their defense.

Two days after adding D.J. Williams, the Bears have signed James Anderson away from the Panthers.

According to Larry Mayer of the Bears’ official website, the seven-year veteran has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with Chicago.

Anderson started 12 games at strongside linebacker in 2012. He missed the last four games with a back injury.  His 84 tackles were third most on the team.

In 2011, Anderson started all 16 games. He was a third-round pick (88th overall) in the 2006 draft.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- The Oakland Raiders released defensive tackle Tommy Kelly on Wednesday, cutting ties with their longest-tenured position player on the roster.

The move is the latest to distance the organization from the era of late owner Al Davis. Kelly originally signed with Oakland as an undrafted free agent in 2004 and quickly became a mainstay on the defense, signing a $50.1 million, seven-year contract to remain with Oakland in 2008.

But general manager Reggie McKenzie cut Kelly two years before the end of that contract, getting Kelly's $6.5 million salary for 2013 off the books.

Kelly, 32, is the third prominent player acquired by Davis who has been released this month, following defensive back Michael Huff and receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey.

And now there's talk that the Raiders are going to release Carson Palmer, because he refuses to take a pay cut.

Good fucking riddance, you barelywere.  He played the primadonna card in Cinci and then Hue Jackson fucked the team by convincing them to give up a first round last year and a 2nd this year.  And now he's pulling it again.

Osi Umenyiora agrees to deal with Falcons
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 27, 2013, 8:38 PM EDT

The long-awaited deal is now done: Osi Umenyiora has agreed to terms on a contract with the Falcons.

Atlanta and Umenyiora, a free agent defensive end who has been linked to the team for weeks, reached a deal on a two-year contract today, Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports.

When Umenyiora said last week that it would mean more to him to win a Super Bowl with the Falcons than his Super Bowls with the Giants meant to him, it strongly suggested that Umenyiora had his heart set on getting something done with Atlanta. Now something finally is done.

The 31-year-old Umenyiora has played his entire 10-year career with the Giants. He’s coming off a disappointing season in which he recorded 6.0 sacks, but in Atlanta he’ll be counted upon to replace the departed John Abraham, who had a team-high 10 sacks for the Falcons in 2012.

Victor Butler chooses the Saints
Posted by Darin Gantt on March 28, 2013, 12:39 PM EDT

The Victor Across America Tour has ended, as Cowboys outside linebacker Victor Butler has chosen a team.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Butler ended his free agent tour by picking the Saints.

Butler had also visited the Steelers, Browns and Eagles, but chose to reunite with Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.

Butler was an effective sub, with 11.0 sacks in four seasons, but he was stuck behind DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer in Dallas. The Saints can offer him more play-time, as they’re desperately looking for pass-rush help as they transition to a 3-4.

Having Butler around should help Ryan install his system as well.

Bears bring in Matt Slauson
Posted by Darin Gantt on March 29, 2013, 2:35 PM EDT

The Bears didn’t wait long to fill a void created by a free agent departure, adding to their offensive line.

After losing Lance Louis to the Dolphins this week, they moved quickly to reach a one-year deal with former Jets guard Matt Slauson, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

Slauson started the last three seasons for the Jets.

Along with early pickup Jermon Bushrod, the Bears have added two quality starters for the left side of the line, which should help keep quarterback Jay Cutler happy. Or at least happier.
