First team to 50 wins, sole possession of first place, twenty games over.

....and all I can think of is the fear of a meltdown.

I know we've played this game the past two years but this would be some meltdown. I mean, I don't think this is a 100+-win team which is what they're on pace for, but a 30-52 finish will break the 20-year streak. Isn't that all you can really ask for? I mean, that's what I'm asking for with the Indians.

The biggest fear I'd have is that of the bullpen wearing down, since a lot of the frontline starters are injured and the guys in the rotation now don't seem capable of going deep into games.

I think the difference this year is the ridiculous depth in starting pitching they have. They have guys in AAA who in most years would already be part of the rotation if not for the logjam they have. We've already seen the entire rotation from the beginning of the season except for Jeff Locke miss time and the team didn't miss a beat. AJ and Wandy will be back soon enough which should help ease the stress on the bullpen.

If they would use some of those extra arms to pick up a decent bat at the deadline, look out.

Now you can finally relate to Red Sox fans.

It's going to be hard for them to lose 100 games this year

I hope not.  Their fans deserve this season, at least the real ones who stuck it out since the early '90s.  Parity diminishes the accomplishment with all these last-to-first stories over the last decade, but still it's good for the game to have them be good for a little while again.

To set your sights a bit lower, they only have to play .388 ball the rest of the way to break .500 for the first time since 1992.  Definitely an attainable goal.

That said, I hope they kick ass for the rest of the season.

I'm happy most of all for the Pirates' long suffering fans. They deserve some success. It'd be great to see the Pirates go all the way, but even a post season appearance would be nice. That ballpark looks awesome (I want to visit it someday). Now it finally has a team worthy of such a setting.

I meant that even when your team is going good you are in constant fear of it all going bad.

The Buccos have lost 5 of their last 7 games.

No offense except for Alvarez.

Has the collapse begun a week early?

I'm still pulling for you guys.

I can see the Bravos bats going stale in the postseason and they are relying on too many guys who IMO blow, chiefly Uggla and Heyward. Heyward might be the single most overrated player I've seen in the past 20 years.

The Yankees smoke and mirrors act has been awful to watch but I am miffed that Joe Girardi didn't even make the top 5 in "Manager of the Year" tallys at the mid-way point. At this point, I don't even think it's close. It's Girardi in a landslide with an awful lineup, bad peripherals and more injuries than any other team, and they're still in contention. And I often wonder what the hell Joe's doing and disagree with a lot of his moves and strategy, but he's done an amazing job this season.

Pirates beat the A's last night after a rain delay so long it seemed like a home game for Oakland our time.

For all the people worried about a collapse, this was the first losing streak since they opened the season 1-5. They ran into some good pitching, including Bartolo "my fat ass is probably going to get suspended next week for PEDs" Colon.

Also Pedro not in the HR derby is some bullshit.

...and of course literally seconds after I post that, Pedro just got named to the HR derby replacing CarGo.

A's / Pirates might  have been a World Series preview

Cubs helped The Pirates by shutting out St. Louis 3-0 last night. I'm rooting for the Pirates. I hate the Cardinals.
