Jets re-sign Redmond — one year, $715,000

Joe Yerdon

Jul 20, 2013, 3:47 PM EDT

Winnipeg took care of yet another of their restricted free agents today.

The team announced they’ve re-signed defenseman Zach Redmond to a one-year deal worth $715,000.

Redmond played in just eight games last season due much in part to a freak skate blade accident that threatened his career. After missing over two months of action, he returned to the ice and received a standing ovation from the fans in Winnipeg.

In those eight games, he had a goal and three assists with 12 penalty minutes. On the upside, he averaged just over 19 minutes a game on the blue line. He’ll be in the mix to compete for the fifth or sixth defense spot with the Jets next season.

Flames hand one-year deals to Bouma, Byron

James O'Brien

Jul 20, 2013, 10:39 PM EDT

The Calgary Flames made some more small signings on Saturday, agreeing to one-year, two-way contracts with forwards Lance Bouma and Paul Byron.

Bouma, 23, would make $577,500 at the NHL level and $100K in the AHL while Byron, 24, gets $643,500 in the NHL and $125K in the AHL.

Each forward has a decent amount of NHL experience.

Bouma has played 43 games between 2010-11 (16 GP) and 2011-12 (27 GP), all with the Flames. He scored four points in those 43 contests.

Byron has 34 games on his NHL resume, with 26 coming for Calgary, including his one-assist, four-game stint in 2013.

The Flames have been taking care of business lately, as they also signed second-rounder Patrick Sieloff this weekend and inked a deal with defenseman Mark Cundari earlier this week.

Report: Jagr ’99 percent’ to sign with Devils

Joe Yerdon

Jul 21, 2013, 10:30 AM EDT

JagrWatch 2013 rolls on and the smoke surrounding the possibility of him signing with the New Jersey Devils grows ever stronger.

Czech broadcaster Roman Jedlicka tweeted saying it was “99 percent Jagr is gonna sign” with the Devils.

This follows on the heels of news reports of the 41 year-old future Hall of Famer being in New Jersey to “inspect” the Prudential Center and to see what’s going on there.

Of course, the Devils aren’t commenting on the situation and everything else coming out of the Czech Republic regarding Jagr is speculative, at best. The Devils make a lot of sense for Jagr as they need help now that Ilya Kovalchuk has fled to the KHL and they lost David Clarkson to free agency.

At this point the situation feels like episode of “Seinfeld” with Jerry negotiating to get Puddy and Elaine back together. “What’s it going to take to get you two in a relationship?”

Nashville re-signs Spaling — one year, $1.5 million

Joe Yerdon

Jul 21, 2013, 1:45 PM EDT

You can scratch another potential arbitration case off the docket.

TSN’s Darren Dreger reports Nashville has re-signed forward Nick Spaling to a one-year, $1.5 million deal. The two sides were set to head to arbitration on Thursday, but get to avoid that potential unpleasantness now.

Last season, Spaling had nine goals and four assists in the lockout shortened season. His goal total was one shy of his career-high set the season previous.

As a third line type of player, he’s turned into a valuable performer for the Predators. If that offensive production can continue to improve, he can count on seeing another raise next summer.

Isles’ Regin agreed to sign with team from a taxi cab

Joe Yerdon

Jul 21, 2013, 4:10 PM EDT

Players can be excited by free agency. Sometimes they’re so excited to sign in a new place they’ll make sure to do it from anywhere.

Such is the case for one of the newest Islanders Peter Regin.

Regin hails from Denmark and fellow countryman and best friend Frans Nielsen provided all the motivation he needed to want to sign on Long Island as a story on a Danish website shares. The gang at Lighthouse Hockey were kind enough to point out how quickly he wanted to get it done.

In the article, Regin is quoted discussing how he long had the Isles in his sights, so the decision when free agency opened was a quick one that he made while in a taxi cab on the way back from the golf course.

“Taxi! I need to sign with the Islanders, pronto!”

It’s a great anecdote but the part of this that would make it more like something out of a storybook would be if Regin can stay healthy and teams up with Nielsen to prove Denmark isn’t just about Hamlet.

Undrafted Russian invitee impresses at Carolina prospect camp

Joe Yerdon

Jul 21, 2013, 4:55 PM EDT

Carolina had a surprise standout at their prospect camp this week in the form of an undrafted Russian invitee from the OHL.

Forward Sergey Tolchinsky surprised many with his play and as Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports, Hurricanes management certainly took notice.

“He’s probably the biggest surprise or explosive guy this week who made people look at him,” Kirk Muller said. “He didn’t get drafted – let’s be honest, probably people said it was his size. There’s a good example of you look at him, you get to know him, he’s got a great attitude and is a fun-loving guy and he plays hard and he produces.

“He’s a guy that I would say that really made us turn our heads.”

As for his size, that could be an issue. At 5’8″ 164 pounds, he’s not at all big. Then again, sometimes you don’t need to be big to have success in the NHL. Just ask Tampa’s Martin St. Louis or Ottawa’s Cory Conacher about that.

Last year, his first season with the Soo Greyhounds, Tolchinsky showed he’s got game scoring 26 goals with 25 assists. He’ll have time to develop more and impress other teams should Carolina not move to sign him. At the very least, he’s left a great impression for an undrafted player.

Oilers, Gagner avoid arbitration — agree to three-year, $14.4 million contract

Ryan Dadoun

Jul 22, 2013, 9:48 AM EDT

The Edmonton Oilers and 23-year-old forward Sam Gagner waited until the last minute to avoid arbitration. The two sides had a hearing scheduled for this morning, but the Oilers announced that they have agreed to a three-year contract.

The deal comes with a $4.8 million cap hit, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie. Gagner was asking for $5.5 million in arbitration while the Edmonton Oilers countered with $3.5 million.

Gagner has never recorded more than 49 points in a single season, but he did well during the shortened campaign with 14 goals and 38 points in 48 contests. He also showed a flash of brilliance on Feb. 2, 2012 when he scored four goals and eight points in a single game. That was part of a five-game hot streak where Gagner netted eight goals and registered seven assists.

With Gagner locked up, he’ll join Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall, David Perron, and Boyd Gordon as the only forwards the Oilers have signed to one-way contracts through at least 2015-16.

And a NMC in the 5M years. RT @Bob_Stauffer Gagner gets 4.4M/5M/5M over next 3 years

Report: Jagr agrees to join Devils (Updated)

Jason Brough

Jul 22, 2013, 11:37 AM EDT

Jaromir Jagr has agreed to join the New Jersey Devils on a one-year deal, according to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun.

The deal isn’t expected to be officially announced until tomorrow; however, it should come as no surprise after it was reported this weekend that the 41-year-old forward was “99 percent” certain to sign with the Devils.

No financial details have been reported. Jagr’s made $4.5 million (prorated) in 2013.

If he does indeed sign, the Devils will be Jagr’s seventh NHL team. New Jersey will obviously be hoping he can help replace the departed Ilya Kovalchuk.

Update (12:07 p.m. ET):

Devils GM Lou Lamoriello on Jaromir Jagr report: "It's all rumors right now. If we have anything to report, we'll do that."—

Ottawa signs Wiercioch — three years, $6 million

Jason Brough

Jul 22, 2013, 1:02 PM EDT

The Ottawa Senators have re-signed defenceman Patrick Wiercioch to a three-year, $6 million contract, the club announced today.

Wiercioch was a restricted free agent coming off an impressive rookie season. With 19 points in 42 games, the 22-year-old finished second among NHL rookie defensemen in points, behind only Justin Schultz (27) in Edmonton.

While Wiercioch’s deal may seem a bit rich in relation to, say, Jake Muzzin, who just signed a two-year, $2 million extension with the Kings, it may still end up a bargain — especially in the latter part of the contract — if Wiercioch continues to improve and the salary cap rises.

Wiercioch was Ottawa’s second-round selection (42nd overall) in the 2008 NHL Draft.

Jets re-sign Little — five years, $23.5 million

Jason Brough

Jul 22, 2013, 4:46 PM EDT

The Winnipeg Jets have re-signed center Bryan Little to a five-year, $23.5 million contract, avoiding arbitration with the 25-year-old.

Little had seven goals and 25 assists for the Jets in 2013, appearing in all 48 regular-season games and winning a team-high 431 faceoffs. His $4.7 million cap hit is the second highest among forwards on the club, behind only Evander Kane ($5.25 million.)

The Jets still have two key restricted free agents headed toward arbitration — d-man Zach Bogosian and forward Blake Wheeler.

Leafs lock up Gunnarsson for three years, avoid arbitration

Jason Brough

Jul 22, 2013, 5:25 PM EDT

The Toronto Maple Leafs have re-signed defenseman Carl Gunnarsson to a three-year, $9.45 million deal.

A restricted free agent, Gunnarsson had filed for arbitration, but obviously a hearing won’t be required now. The 26-year-old played 37 games in 2013, scoring once and adding 14 assists while averaging 21:17 of ice time per game.

The Leafs still have three RFAs to sign: Nazem Kadri, Cody Franson, and Mark Fraser, the latter of whom also filed for arbitration.

Gunnarsson figures to be a top-four defenseman again next season in Toronto, making his cap hit of $3.15 million seem quite reasonable.

#Leafs avoid salary arbitration with Carl Gunnarsson with 3 yr deal at $2.85m, $3.15m & $3.45m.—

Flames sign first-rounder Sean Monahan

James O'Brien

Jul 22, 2013, 9:15 PM EDT

The Calgary Flames signed the most prominent of their three 2013 first-rounders on Monday, handing Sean Monahan a three-year entry-level contract.

“Getting Sean signed prior to Rookie Camp and Main Camp has always been our priority and we are very pleased to have him in the fold,” Flames GM Jay Feaster said. “From our very first interaction with him, Sean has demonstrated a seriousness of purpose and a steadfast resolve to be the very best player he can be, and his character and work ethic have continued to shine through in his preparation this summer. Not only is Sean a very good hockey player, but he is a great person as well. He had a solid showing at our recent development camp, and as we shared with him afterward, we look forward to watching him play at our rookie tournament in Penticton and then attempt to compete for a spot at main camp in Calgary.”

Calgary selected the center sixth overall. Click here to get to know the 18-year-old prospect a little better.

His contract carries a $1.775 million cap hit.

Going deeper on the details, the deal pays him $832,500 at the NHL level and $70K in the AHL. Each year includes a $92,500 signing bonus and performance bonuses up to $850K.

The Flames selected wingers Emile Poirier (22nd) and Morgan Klimchuk (28th) with their other two first-round picks, so the organization’s hope is that they took significant steps in a begrudging rebuild this summer.

Coyotes re-sign Rundbald, four other players

James O'Brien

Jul 22, 2013, 10:13 PM EDT

The Phoenix Coyotes re-signed five players on Monday, most notably inking defenseman David Runblad to a two-year, one-way contract.

Phoenix also handed defenseman Mark Louis a two-year, two-way contract while giving one-year, two-way deals to forwards Brett Hextall and Brandon McMillan and blueliner Mathieu Brodeur.

The financial details haven’t been shared, so the most interesting tidbit is that Rundblad, 22, receives a one-way pact. The offensive defenseman receives a nod as a full-time NHLer next season after playing 50 games in the AHL versus just eight with the Coyotes in 2013.

Rundblad struggled in his limited time with Phoenix (one assist and a -5 rating in eight contests) while he put up nice numbers for the Portland Pirates (39 points in 50 games).

At such a young age, the Coyotes are reasonable to believe that the Swede can get the hang of things at the NHL level, possibly starting in 2013-14.

Jets ink Peluso for two years

James O'Brien

Jul 22, 2013, 11:09 PM EDT

The Winnipeg Jets signed tough guy Anthony Peluso to a two-year deal worth $1.125 million on Monday.

The 24-year-old made his NHL debut in five games for Winnipeg and played 36 more with the Peoria Rivermen in the AHL in 2013.

He dropped the gloves twice in his five games at the NHL level.

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/07/23/devils-officially-ink-jagr-to-one-year-deal/

Devils officially ink Jagr to one-year deal (Updated with salary)

Mike Halford

Jul 23, 2013, 1:59 PM EDT

The New Jersey Devils have officially announced the signing of veteran forward Jaromir Jagr — a one-year deal with a $2 million base salary.

According to Chris Johnston of Sportsnet, the remainder of the deal is more complex. Jagr gets a $250,000 bonus for every five games played from 10 to 45, meaning there’s potential for an additional $2 million in bonus money.

So all told, the contract could be worth around $4 million for 2013-14.

Rumors of a deal with the Devils have persisted for days. On Monday, ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun reported Jagr had agreed to join the club.

New Jersey is the seventh NHL team that Jagr, 41, has played for during his 23-year career after being drafted by Pittsburgh fifth overall at the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. He’s also spent time in Washington, New York (Rangers), Philadelphia, Dallas and Boston.

As mentioned, no financial details have been reported on the new deal with the Devils, though Jagr made $4.5 million (prorated) in 2013 and $3.3 million in 2011-12 with Philadelphia.

The move to New Jersey makes sense on a number of fronts.

One, the club needed a skill winger with some star power after Ilya Kovalchuk’s shock retirement.

Two, New Jersey has nearly $10 million in available cap space, more than enough to make Jagr a healthy offer.

Three, there’s a certain comfort level for Jagr in Jersey.

The Devils have fellow Czechs Patrik Elias and Marek Zidlicky on the active roster and recently signed another Czech, Rostislav Olesz, to a one-year deal.

New Jersey also signed Jagr’s former Stars teammate, Michael Ryder, earlier this summer.
