Chicago Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman made it clear he was going to get defenseman Nick Leddy re-signed. On Wednesday, the Blackhawks did. Leddy was signed to a two-year deal, the Blackhawks officially announced on Wednesday afternoon. The 22-year-old, a restricted free agent, had wrapped up a three-year deal this past season. Around 5 p.m. today Leddy’s agent, Neil Sheehy, tweeted the following: “Nick Leddy loves playing for the Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks. Expect an announcement from the ‘Hawks on Nick's future with Club.” At around 6 p.m., that announcement came. “I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to remain in Chicago and be a part of this special group of young, experienced players on a team in a winning environment," Leddy said in a statement. “The organization is first class both on and off the ice, and I’m honored to be a member of the Chicago Blackhawks.” Leddy, who was paired with Michal Rozsival or Sheldon Brookbank as part of the Blackhawks’ third defensive pair, had six goals and 12 assists during the regular season. He had a relatively quiet postseason, and his minutes diminished in the Stanley Cup Final. But Bowman was looking at the big picture with his young defenseman, and said last week the Blackhawks were determined to keep him. “Nick had a tremendous season if you look back,” Bowman said. “We’re excited about his future. He’s taken steps every year, and I expect next year to be another one where he’ll raise his game. He has that experience now, and we look forward to next year for him.” --------------------- Salary not available yet.

The Boston Bruins and Dallas Stars have completed a blockbuster seven-player trade that will see two prominent players swap jerseys. The Bruins traded Tyler Seguin, Rich Peverley and Ryan Button to the Stars in exchange for Loui Eriksson, Joe Morrow, Reilly Smith, and Matt Fraser. TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com says that Eriksson agreed to waive his no-trade clause earlier on Thursday. Seguin has yet to begin a six-year, $34.5 million contract he signed just prior to the beginning of the lockout. The deal has an annual salary cap hit of $5.75 million and runs until the 2018-19 season. The 21-year-old forward was selected second overall in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Bruins and spent the first three seasons of his NHL career with the team. Seguin was the first of three players selected by the Bruins with draft picks acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 2009 deal for forward Phil Kessel. In his rookie season, Seguin had 22 points in 74 regular season games and then scored three goals and seven points in 13 playoff games as the Bruins captured the Stanley Cup in 2011. Eriksson, 27, has three years remaining on his contract and has a cap hit of $4.25 million per year. He played in all 48 games last season for Dallas, recording 12 goals and 17 assists. In the four seasons before the lockout, the winger recorded at least 26 goals in each campaign. In 501 career regular season games, Eriksson has posted 150 goals and 207 assists. Peverley, 30, had six goals and 12 assists in 47 games for the Bruins this season. The seven-year NHL veteran began his career with the Nashville Predators and played for the Atlanta Thrashers before being traded to Boston in February, 2011. Morrow, 20, is an Edmonton native who played last season in the American Hockey League. In 66 games with Scranton Wilkes-Barre and Texas, the defenceman had five goals and 14 assists. He was Pittsburgh's first-round pick (23rd overall) in the 2011 draft, and was traded to Dallas as part of the Brenden Morrow deal on Mar. 24 this year. Smith is a 22-year-old Toronto native who appeared in 37 games for the Stars last season. The forward had three goals and six assists and was the Stars' third-round draft choice in 2009. Fraser, 23, hails from Red Deer, Alberta and had one goal and two assists in 12 games for Dallas last season. The forward signed as a free agent by the Stars in November, 2010. Button, 22, is an Edmonton native who split his time last season between the ECHL and the AHL. The blueliner was Boston's third-round pick in 2009.

Deal is now official. Boston Gets: RW/LW Loui Eriksson ( 27 years old ) had 29 points last year with Dallas in 48 games but averaged over 70 pts the 3 seasons before. D Joe Morrow ( 20 years old ) drafted # 23 in 2011. He had 19 points in 66 AHL games last year. RW/LW Reilly Smith ( 22 years old ) drafted # 69 in 2009. Had 9 points last year with Dallas in 27 games. LW Matt Fraser ( 23 years old ) signed by Dallas a Free Agent in 2010. Had 3 points last year with Dallas in 12 games and had 46 points in 62 games in the AHL. Dallas Gets: RW Tyler Seguin ( 21 years old ) drafted # 2 in 2010. Scored 32 points in 48 games last year but had 67 points and a +34 the year before. C Rich Peverley ( 30 years old ) scored 18 points in 47 games last year. One of the NHL's best Faceoff men and a very good penalty killer. D Ryan Button ( 22 years old ) drafted # 86 in 2009. A defensive blueliner who had 0 points in 30 games last year in the AHL and ECHL. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As much as I love getting Eriksson on Boston I just can't believe Boston has already given up on Seguin. This is the type of deal that I get a feeling a few years down the road I am really going to hate. Last edited on Thu Jul 4th, 2013 07:40 pm by CanadianHorseman ____________________ ![]() |

The Montreal Canadiens have agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent forward Daniel Briere on a two-year, $8 million contract. The 35-year-old spent the past six seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. During the lockout shortened 2012-13 campaign, Briere posted six goals and 16 points in 34 games. Prior to his time in Philadelphia, Briere spent time with the Buffalo Sabres and Phoenix Coyotes. The 15-year veteran was originally drafted 24th overall by the Coyotes in the 1996 NHL Draft. In 847 career games, Briere has 286 goals and 659 points.

Cory17 wrote:I agree, way to early to give up on Seguin. I'm still in shock. One good thing that immediately comes to mind is that by losing Seguin ( $ 5.75 million ) and Peverley ( $ 3.25 million ) and adding Eriksson ( $ 4.25 million ) it gives Boston an extra $ 4.75 million to add another RW to take Horton's spot.

I'm not sure there is a FA out there that fits the bill of what Boston is looking for so that money might be used to pick up a higher salary in a trade.
