The Buffalo Sabres have signed forward Cody Hodgson to a long-term multi-year contract extension, the club announced Wednesday.

The 23-year-old restricted free agent appeared in all 48 games last season, finishing second among all Sabres skaters with 15 goals and 34 points.

"We are extremely excited to have signed Cody to a long-term deal," Sabres general manager Darcy Regier said. "We feel he is going to be an important piece of our organization's success in the future and look forward to watching him develop as a player."

In parts of four NHL seasons, the Toronto, Ontario native appeared in 139 games between the Sabres and Vancouver Canucks, tallying 35 goals and 42 assists.

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed veteran defenceman Ron Hainsey to a one-year, $2 million contract.

The unrestricted free agent blueliner played last season for the Winnipeg Jets.

The move came one day after the Hurricanes learned that defenceman Joni Pitkanen will be out for the season with a broken heel.

Hainsey, 32, is a veteran of 10 NHL seasons. He was a first-round pick (12th overall) of the Montreal Canadiens in 2000 and appeared in 32 games for the Habs. He went on to play three seasons for the Columbus Blue Jackets and five for the Atlanta Thrashers/Winnipeg Jets franchise.

The native of Bolton, Connecticut had 13 assists in 47 games for the Jets last season. In 591 NHL contests Hainsey has 34 goals and 192 points.

I need Jared Cowen to be re-signed by Ottawa. He's on one of My fantasy salary cap keeper league teams.

The St. Louis Blues and restricted free agent defenceman Alex Pietrangelo have agreed to terms on a new seven-year, $45.5 million contract.

The deal has an average annual value of $6.5 million.

"We're excited to have Alex in the fold for the next seven years as he will continue be a key component of our franchise," said Blues general manager Doug Armstrong in a statement. "He is an elite defenceman in this league and will be for years to come."

The 23-year-old played in 47 games for the Blues last season with five goals and 19 assists.

Very good cap hit for the Blues.

from tsn.ca:

The Ottawa Senators have agreed to terms with defenceman Jared Cowen on a four-year contract.

Sources tell TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie the deal is worth $12.4 million for an average annual value of $3.1 million.

Cowen began the 2012-13 season with the Binghamton Senators, recording three assists in three games. He underwent surgery in November to repair a torn labrum in his left hip, sidelining him until April when he made his NHL season debut against the Carolina Hurricanes.

The 22-year-old Cowen played seven regular-season NHL games last season, scoring one goal. He also played in each of Ottawa's 10 playoff games against the Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins, recording three assists and 21 penalty minutes.

Cowen was the Senators' first-round pick (ninth overall) in the 2009 NHL draft.

He played in all 82 games of his rookie season with the Senators in 2011-12, scoring five goals and adding 12 assists.

Kessel has to get at least 5 games for those 2 slashes. That 2nd one was pretty bad since Scott was tied up with a couple of Leaf players.

I actually watched some exhibition Hockey on the NHL Network yesterday. The Hawks beat Detroit 4-3. Hawks still don't have a 2nd line center.

Best part is Kessel fought, and BLOODIED, a Sabre player. HAHAHAHA I love it.

I don't think Kessel will be suspended, but I assume he would be fined. But what do I know?

Bernier beating up Miller was almost as good as Potvin bloodying Hextall.

OLD TIME HOCKEY

The real best part was Kessel fleeing in fear from Scott. I've never seen him skate backwards that fast before. :D

If Kessel has stopped after the 1st slash he might have escaped suspension but that 2nd one is going to make him miss some games. Scott is a big POS but that 2nd slash was pretty bad - can you imagine TSN imploding right now if Scott was the one that slashed Kessel ????
