http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/07/15/panthers-sign-markstrom-might-shop-for-another-goalie/ Panthers sign Markstrom, might shop for another goalie James O'Brien Jul 15, 2013, 5:51 PM EDT The Florida Panthers came to an agreement on a two-year deal with an interesting structure for their potential goalie of the future Jacob Markstrom, the Miami Herald’s George Richards reports. Financial terms are unclear at this moment. Assistant GM Mike Santos confirms that the deal is two-way in the 2013-14 and then goes one-way in 2014-15. That would already be an interesting window into the Panthers’ goaltending plan, but Santos really spelled things out by telling Richards that they might look at another goalie if that netminder fits in their budget. With Tim Thomas and Ilya Bryzgalov still on the market, it’s amusing to imagine them in John Vanbiesbrouck’s old Panthers mask, but it would be surprising if one of those two would come at the price they’re looking for. (Not to mention play for a team that has only made the playoffs once in more than a decade.) Santos said that the job won’t just be handed to Markstrom, 23, although it seems like the big Swede has the leg up on Scott Clemmensen. His first extended bit of NHL play wasn’t exactly a smash success; Markstrom went 8-14-1 with a .901 save percentage and 3.22 GAA in 23 games in 2013. Thanks to the structure of this new contract, the Panthers could opt to send him back to the AHL for more seasoning if he struggles again in 2013-14. They can also do so if they find that budget netminder Santos alluded to.

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/07/15/bruins-fire-scouting-head-wayne-smith/ Bruins fire scouting head Wayne Smith James O'Brien Jul 15, 2013, 10:34 PM EDT The Boston Bruins decided to fire director of amateur scouting Wayne Smith sometime following the 2013 NHL Draft, CSNNE.com reports. GM Peter Chiarelli provided the Hockey News’ Ken Campbell with a vague explanation for why he was canned. “We wanted to freshen up our amateur scouting and shift things a little bit and we felt this was the way to do it,” Chiarelli said. “Wayne has done a good job and I’ll give him a good reference, but we wanted to inject some new life.” Campbell finds the change a little strange. It seems rather odd, given that Chiarelli admits that Smith is his good friend and is a very good scout. Their prospect list was solid, ranking them 12th among NHL organizations in THN’s Future Watch edition in 2013. Then again, when you look at the list of players the Bruins have drafted since Smith took over the scouting department in 2007, it’s clear that the Bruins’ impressive work has mainly come from trades and free agent moves. As Hockey Prospectus’ Corey Pronman points out, Tyler Seguin is the only NHL regular the team drafted from 2007-2010. It’s possible that more recent drafts could produce better results with the likes of Dougie Hamilton and Malcolm Subban in the mix, but first-rounders like Jordan Caron and Zach Hamill haven’t exactly worked out. Either way, parting with Smith is another example of a Bruins franchise that is adapting on the fly, even amid substantial bigger picture success.

The 23-year-old Stanton appeared in the Hawks' regular-season finale and was a plus-1 with two penalty minutes in his NHL debut. He remained with the Hawks throughout their run to the Stanley Cup as one of the team's Black Aces. Prior to joining the Hawks, Stanton had a career-high 22 assists and added three goals in 73 regular-season games with the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs, He also posted a career-best plus-16 plus-minus rating. Stanton was originally signed by the Hawks as a free agent on March 12, 2010. He will get a long look during training camp to win a roster spot for the 2013-14 season.

The Blackhawks received a conditional pick in 2015. Carcillo had two goals and an assist in 23 regular-season games for Chicago. The 28-year-old left-winger dressed for four playoff games during the Blackhawks' Stanley Cup run, picking up one assist. http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/07/17/report-blake-to-replace-hextall-in-los-angeles/ Report: Blake to replace Hextall in Los Angeles Jason Brough Jul 17, 2013, 11:47 AM EDT Rob Blake is once again returning to the Los Angeles Kings. This time, it’s to replace Ron Hextall as assistant general manager, sources tell MayorsManor. If true, Blake will make the move from the NHL’s Department of Player Safety, where he’s been since January of 2010 and where he worked with the league’s chief disciplinarian, Brendan Shanahan. Blake, of course, spent the majority of his stellar hockey career playing defense for the Kings. In fact, he had two stints in Los Angeles; his first return to the club that drafted him came in 2006 when he signed as a free agent. The Kings will apparently make the announcement later this week.

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/07/17/preds-sign-clune-to-two-year-1-7-million-extension/ Preds sign Clune to two-year, $1.7 million extension Jason Brough Jul 17, 2013, 12:55 PM EDT The Nashville Predators announced today that they’ve signed forward Rich Clune to a two-year, $1.7 million contract extension that will pay him $850,000 in both 2014-15 and 2015-16. Clune, 26, was a pending unrestricted free agent who last year scored four goals and five assists in 47 games while amassing team highs in penalty minutes (113) and hits (159). The commitment from the Preds is especially encouraging given he’s faced substance-abuse problems in the past, as documented in March by ESPN’s Scott Burnside. Clune was claimed on waivers by Nashville on Jan. 15.

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/07/17/horton-surgery-deemed-successful/ Horton surgery deemed successful Jason Brough Jul 17, 2013, 5:18 PM EDT Nathan Horton has undergone successful shoulder surgery, the Columbus Blue Jackets announced today. “Nathan’s surgery went very well and he is expected to make a full recovery after completing his rehabilitation program,” said Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen in a release. Horton had the operation done at the Boston Shoulder Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital. His expected recovery period remains 4-6 months, meaning he’ll miss at least the first couple of months of the 2013-14 NHL season. Columbus signed the 28-year-old forward to a seven-year, $37.1 million contract on July 5. Horton reportedly had a chronic shoulder injury dating back to his time with Florida. He re-injured it during a fight against Jarome Iginla in April, then tweaked it again during Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final against Chicago.

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/07/17/roundup-avs-re-sign-malone-sens-ink-hoffman/ Roundup: Avs re-sign Malone, Sens ink Hoffman Mike Halford Jul 17, 2013, 8:14 PM EDT Some minor signings to pass your way… Colorado signs Malone The Avs have brought back forward Brad Malone on a one-year, two-way deal worth $735,000 at the NHL level, according to Adrian Dater of the Denver Post. Malone, 24, was taken by Colorado at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft and has appeared in 22 career NHL contests, all with the Avs. The former North Dakota standout became a lineup regular late last season, appearing in most of Colorado’s April games. Ottawa inks Hoffman The Senators have agreed to terms with RFA forward Mike Hoffman on a one-year, two-way deal worth $660,00 at the NHL level. Hoffman, 23, starred for AHL Binghamton before breaking his collarbone prior to the AHL All-Star Game. After recovering, he was called up to Ottawa — appearing in three games for the Sens — before re-injuring the collarbone and missing the remainder of the season. Despite being limited to just 41 games due to injury, Hoffman still finished with 28 points for Binghamton in 2013.

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/07/18/dustin-jeffrey-penguins-agree-to-one-year-deal/ Dustin Jeffrey, Penguins agree to one-year deal Ryan Dadoun Jul 18, 2013, 9:59 AM EDT The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced that 25-year-old forward Dustin Jeffrey has agreed to a one-year, $625,000 contract. That gives the Penguins 12 forwards signed to one-way deals for the 2013-14 campaign. Jeffrey was a dominant player offensively in the AHL, but the Penguins have used him primarily as a depth forward. He scored three goals and six points in 24 games while averaging 11:31 minutes per contest last season. The team didn’t use him during the 2013 playoff run. Of the players that contributed to the Penguins last season, defenseman Robert Bortuzzo is the only remaining restricted free agent. Unlike Jeffrey, Bortuzzo filed for arbitration and has a hearing scheduled for Aug. 1. Meanwhile, the Penguins are interested in locking Bortuzzo up to a multi-year deal, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/07/18/grabovski-not-interested-in-khl/ Grabovski not interested in KHL Jason Brough Jul 18, 2013, 12:27 PM EDT Bought out by the Maple Leafs earlier this month, Mikhail Grabovski has yet to land a new contract with an NHL team. And make no mistake — the NHL is where the 29-year-old from Belarus wants to be. Per Yahoo! Sports’ Dmitry Chesnokov, Grabovski says he’s not interested in the one KHL offer (from Atlant, apparently) he’s received. Grabovski, a center, had four years remaining on his five-year contract with Toronto (cap hit $5.5 million). The buyout will cost the Leafs $14.3 million over eight years. While Grabovski suffered through a frustrating 2013 season offensively and didn’t exactly leave Toronto on the best terms, his services could certainly be used somewhere. In 2010-11, he had a career-high 29 goals. In 2011-12, he scored 23 times. Just to throw one team out there: how about Winnipeg? The Jets are looking a bit thin down the middle after Alexander Burmistrov bolted for the KHL.
