I was listening to the Pirates-Cubs game today and the controversy over the new blocking the plate rule was being discussed at length.

This got me thinking about the new rules in sports, but especially the NFL.   Do you think the NFL is making itself vulnerable to competitors.  I know the NFL can crush just about any competition, but what if a group proposed a professional football league where you basically play at your own risk and allows some on-field entertainment such as dancing and celebrating?

I know the NFL is the only dance in town, and a very, very powerful and rich one at that, but do you think people would be more apt to follow a new league that has less regulation?

No chance. The financial barriers to entry are too high now for a competitor to form and make a run at the NFL on a major league level. Meanwhile the XFL and UFL conclusively proved that minor league pro football won't garner enough of an audience. The NFL is institutionalized as the top pro sport in this country to an extent that not even MLB at its peak ever reached.

Let me ask this as a follow-up.

At what point do you think that NFL football can regulated before they begin seeing a drop-off in popularity?

Is there a threshold of how much regulation people will tolerate? Or, could they basically do something like rasslin' and take a loss with the older fans and do heavy marketing on a younger crowd who will be groomed to accept a heavily regulated NFL?

Would you continue to watch if it turned into more like flag football? Would you watch a less polished brand of pro football that did not have as much regulation.....for example, leading with the helmet permitted, QBs are open game within reason, end zone celebrations, etc.

The game is still sufficiently violent and nobody really cares much about end zone dancing.

I am not necessarily talking about right now, but I see in the next decade that there will be more and more enforcement to cut down on injuries.

I know that I am already a little annoyed with the leading with the helmet rules and the defenseless player rules and it seems that they keep expanding their scope each year.

The NFL, for all the safety changes in recent season, still presents a game with athletes that are bigger, faster, stronger, and who hit harder than ever before. Watch a game from twenty-five to thirty years ago and it seems not so much like it's in slow motion as opposed to a noticeable split second off compared to now.

The NFL has reeled in the celebrations by players every few years since the early 1980s. Then things get relaxed after a season and different celebrations creep back in. Plus the players figure out new things to do outside the rulebook.
