Please see my post in the General Discussion forum related to Job Risk and Accountability.

I know the NFL is probably one of the biggest, if not the biggest, marketing entities in history.

The assumption is that they will eat up and destroy any competition.

There are many disgruntled NFL fans with the new rule changes and it seems to be growing according to the major media sources.

I know it would not fly in the NFL of having players sign waivers related to their future health issues, such as concussions and future cognitive issues, especially with the player's union, but what if another league back by big money did do this?

And no, not like the XFL, which in my opinion went way over the top.   I am talking about basically the same rules and style of play only allowing the big hits and keeping offenses and defenses on the same balance.   It is the philosophy that scoring points is the attraction, but sort of like wrestling, this seems to appeal more to the younger and newer fans.   Many fans still like watching a grind it out three downs and a cloud of dust brand of football.

Opinions?

A rival league would be squashed like a grape. The USFL was able to tread water for a few years only because it was a spring league. For all that's wrong with the NFL, it's still the 800 lb. gorilla of sports.

I agree. The barrier to entry is too high now. The capital one would need to get a new pro football league started is too immense to be reasonably raised. Fans have also made it clear they want to watch the best players. The XFL died a quick death despite some attributes such as high publicity and weekly games on NBC, USA, and UPN that put it on great footing. Apart from all the WWF garbage that accompanied its launch, life, and death, the lack of big names and poor quality of play helped put the XFL in an early grave. The NFL has its own network plus deals with CBS, NBC, Fox, and ESPN. I doubt TNT would be interested in an alternative league while ABC is an extension of ESPN, ruling it out.

I'll add this, for all of the supposed griping about rule changes and fan disgruntlement, two things are clear. One, the players today are bigger, faster, stronger, and hit harder than ever before. This is still a very violent game. Two, the ratings on the various TV outlets and day of game attendance have shown no signs at all of declining. The NFL has some issues it needs to clean up, but the sky is not falling.

It is not falling yet, but there is without a doubt, as reported in major media outlets that the popularity is not declining, but it is being diminished in certain age ranges. It is sort of comparable to the WWF when they decided to market and promote to younger people.

I think if the trend continues to increased passing opportunities less contact there will be a segment of older and former hardcore fans who will stop watching.

The numbers will be skewed by newer and younger fans, because the new rules will be all that they remember.
