This is not the case witht he NFL or in College football.

Two words - Giants-Dodgers

And you don't see Peter Gammons creaming his bluejeans about that one.  Ever.

The Dodgers & Giants haven't had much of a rivalry the past few seasons. The Yankees & Sox have met in the playoffs 4 times in the last 8 seasons and had a couple of pennant races go right down to the wire. The Dodgers & Giants don't come close these days.

Red Sox-Yankees still get national press when they're not in contention, so that argument makes little sense.

Uhm, don't think they do.  See if you can dig up some archive prior to 1996 to prove me wrong, though.

I'll dig for that horseshit when you do the same to prove ME wrong.

ESPN's constant coverage of everything Yankee and Red Sox.

MLB itself's over-promotion of Derek Jeter and A-Rod, especially wiht how much more out there A-Rod is now than ever.

MLB's scheduling of playoff games to ensure the Yankees, Red Sox, or both are always on in prime time, and the A's/Angels/Twins/Dodgers/Cardinals/Padres/Diamondbacks/Giants are on during the day.

Thanks for pointing out ESPN's obsession with the Yankees and Red Sox. I won't deny that they're two of the most popular and successful teams in baseball, but the coverage of those teams, especially when they play each other, is way out of hand. ESPN figures that since it's a big deal within the New York to Boston corridor that it must be big everywhere. They'd be utterly shocked to realize how little fans in the Midwest and elsewhere care in proportion to the hype.

Of course ESPN is biased though; think about where they're located--Bristol, CT.  Do you think if ESPN were located in, say, Azusa, CA, we wouldn't get Dodger/Giant stuff ad nauseum?

And keep in mind what bart said...you only get this East Coast stuff because both the Sox and Yankees are good now.  Back in the early 1990's, when both teams sucked, that wasn't the case.

You're wrong.  Yes it matters that ESPN is there.  But when one or both were bad, the coverage was still there.

Meanwhile, look at the dimmer spotlight on Cubs-White Sox this very year.

Again, I don't remember that much coverage of Yanks/Sox rivalry prior to 1996.  I'd welcome you to prove me wrong though.  I'll even give you the benefit of the doubt and admit you're right if you find coverage prior to 1999 (the first time the Sox & Yanks met in the playoffs, and when the whole hype started anew after a twenty year hiatus).

Pac 10 football and basketball don't get nearly the same coverage like Big East and other conferences do. I was looking at a list and had no idea that Arizona has sent more players to the NBA any other school, all you ever hear about is UNC and Duke and the Big East teams.

Why do you think people call it the Eastern Sports Programming Network?

How can I possibly prove a negative?  Has Roger Clemens taught us nothing?

At least I'm giving you something to look for.  You're giving me nothing to look for.

Since I voted "Yes" another example of East Coast bias would be how certain New York players are perceived and hyped in relation to players elsewhere.

Joe Namath is in the NFL Hall of Fame. He had the Super Bowl III win to his credit. However he never had a passer rating above 74.3 and is 65.5 for his career. He also threw more interceptions that touchdown passes in 11 out of 13 seasons. Apart from that Super Bowl win, he made the HOF on the basis the New York media and New York based national media latching onto and pushing his looks, charisma, record breaking contract, and overall celebrity. Had he posted those numbers, even with a Super Bowl win, in Kansas City or Cleveland, Namath would not be in the Hall or be the legend he is.

This is the first good argument I've heard today.  I can't dispute this, but I don't care for Namath, so I don't care.

I wonder if it doesn't come down to TV ratings. Do Yankees and Red Sox produce more overall ratings across the board than say the Giants and Dodgers?

For the record, I voted Yes for the East Coast Bias.  It might as well be a DC-Boston Corrodor Bias. See, we think the rest of you all are either Chicagoans, Californians, hippies or rednecks. Thats the way it is. That includes anyone more than an hour from coast.

The East Coast Bias totally exists.

Chicken or the egg.  Yes is the short answer.  But do they produce more ratings because ESPN, Fox and the other MLB tv outlets yell in your ear for 3 weeks building it as must-see stuff?  Yes is the answer to that too.

If ESPN spent the next 3 years building the Rangers vs. Blue Jays as this huge historic spectacle, ratings for those games would soar too.

On occasion, the Chicago Cubs are treated as though they're located in Maine.  But they're the exception, not the rule.

Oh, quit yer whining.  ESPN is a national station and they need to air the gane that will get the highest national rating.  The Yankees or Red Sox will do a better number than the Pirates no matter what their records are.  Just like the Cowboys and Packers always got more Monday and Sinday Night Football games than the Jets.
