-8%

Why?

I say there's entirely too many commercials and you are beginning to turn off people. My best guess.

Some of it has to be people just protesting because of the National Anthem stuff...probably not the whole 8% but I bet 3-4% of it is that..the rest is just shitty games and too much NFL saturation overall. I don't think the commercials matter to people..

What's up w the Monday Night Football schedule. I totally understood having 'dog' games in November when a team that was supposed to be good isn't, but they've opened with LA-SF, Philly-Chic w Atlanta-NO up next. None are likely going to the postseason.

Both of my answers account for a very small number but here they are

Today's kids aren't watching football as much as the kids of the 80's and 90's due to the concussion issues driving kids into playing other sports.

The changing of the rules pushing long time fans away. I watch maybe 3hrs of football a week and it will begin to dwindle as the season goes on. The flags, the replays, the challenges, the hyper analyzing of every play, the inability for the defense to actually defend, changes to extra points and touch backs. It isn't the game it used to be and I don't enjoy it like I used to, I'm just one person but I'm not the only person I know that feels this way.

I remember LA v SF being a MNF game a few times in the 80's and 90's so maybe it was a nostalgia move since the Rams are back in LA. Some would consider the NO v ATL game a rivalry game but I have no clue on the Bears v Eagles match up.

I'll always watch but:
Too much Kaepernick
Lack of stars

the NFL is so watered down that a lot of the non-gambling, non-fantasy players are just sticking to college football. I fucking hate college football. On NFL opening weekend, we went to Bierfest at Busch Gardens, then to Hooters to watch the Punk fight. My wife was so fucked up the next morning that she stayed in bed until 3:30. I had the Philly/Browns and Jax/Packers games on at the hotel and after 20 mins was bored out of my fucking mind. I still for some reason get emotionally invested in the Raiders, but the rest of it sucks balls.

On Sunday I watch Redzone unless the Pats are on. Only full games I see are Thursday, Sunday and Monday eve

I haven't watched a full NFL game other than the Super Bowl or the playoffs in the past 15 years.

When we get gay games like Cincy vs Denver instead of Pittsburgh vs Philly in our area, of course nobody is going to bother to watch, because nobody in the Carolinas gives a simple single rats ass about Cincy or Denver, but there are tons of Steeler fans in the Carolinas.

Stupid shit like that is why ratings are down.

The new rules have definitely affected a contingency of fans. Borderline over-monitoring of the game. Kickoffs have decreased entertainment value since most go out of the end zone.

The video game/Arena Football lack of defense that has nearly killed college football.
Too many commercials. I don't care about Aaron Rodgers ads or stupid TV shows I'll never watch.
The fact that the NFL basically consists of about 5 or 6 very good teams, 16 mediocre ones, and 10 awful ones. That's a lot of bad teams.

All good answers but I do think the numbers pick up as the season goes on.

Right now though you've got baseball pennant races that will affect some markets, the World Cup of Hockey(decidedly a lesser deal in the US than in Canada) but still likely impacting the numbers a little.

-general apathy in regards to athletes in general who today are pretty much all maladjusted entitled pieces of crap.

-on the field product as mentioned where there seemingly is a flag on every play and defenses can't even look in the direction of an offensive player without getting flagged

-In Canada anyways, even though kids are back in school September is still a part of cottage season especially if the weather is nice so it must be similar in some parts of the US, which might take a chunk of early season viewers away.  Plus it's hunting season for something init?

-the Kaepernick thing is probably playing a bit of a roll but I have to wonder how many in the general public who are railing against him get up out of their barcalounger  at home when an anthem is played.

-What does it cost these days to go to an NFL game to watch uneducated, unappreciative future criminals play.  Certainly that must be a factor.

-What does it cost to go to a college game.  It seems there's never an empty seat in the house for college games.

-definitely too many commercials(fucking sick of seeing Peyton call Eli like some freaking rube who doesn't know his bro will be on the field on Sunday) and multiple replays of every play.

This is a good take.  Much like "Raw", you can usually condense a 3 hour broadcast into about an hour.  Oftentimes what I'll do is DVR the Patriots.  Then if it's a 1:00 start, I won't start the DVR until around 2:00.  I'll skip through most of the commercials/flags/dead time/other garbage that goes into a 3 hour game.  By the time the fourth quarter starts, I'm usually caught up and watch the remainder in real time, but I've actually been given back an hour or so to do other stuff.

Realistically I could push it to 1.5 or 2 hours, but I don't always like to skip absolutely everything.  The biggest challenge is trying to stay radio silent for those first three quarters.

I also think that the late summer warm weather that gives people something to do on Sundays hurts them too. By November, people will be watching more. Not me - Redzone is pretty much the only thing I watch when home if the Raiders aren't on. Full games are boring as shit.
