Not much controversy at all for Alabama landing the top spot, after that it starts to turn into a crap shoot with 6 teams with a legit shot vying for 3 spots, all have a case both for and against them.

My top 4 are

1-Alabama  undefeated and a clear #1

2-Ohio State  1 loss to a top 5 team on the road on a fluke play and the best resume of any of the remaining 1 loss teams should get them in

3-Washington  were on the bubble after a bad loss to USC, but a blowout of #8 Colorado in the PAC12 championship should get them in

4-Clemson  Both PSU and Oklahoma are better teams, but Clemson is a 1 loss team and that loss only by 1 point, should be enough to get in

Penn State makes a case for itself as well having won the Big10 title but 2 losses including a 39 point blowout blowout to Michigan keeps them out, IMO.

Oklahoma wins the Big12, but also with 2 losses and one of them being to Ohio State.

Michigan lost 2 of their last 3 games and is out.

I think you have it right but I also think they need to go to an 8-team playoff

Power 5 conference champions plus 3 at large bids.  And, every conference MUST have a championship game if they don't already.

I rather bitching over the 6,7,8 seeds than 3,4,5.

The thing that makes college football so fun is the idea that every game of every week means something. Ohio State had to sweat it and fight back after the Penn State loss because only four teams get in. With an eight team field their ticket would have been punched regardless. Instead we'd be arguing about the merits and demerits of the teams in the 7 to 10 spots in the rankings; Oklahoma, Wisconsin, USC, and Colorado, none of which would have had a prayer in the playoff anyway. Four teams is just fine. There will always be a team in the 5 or 6 spot that feels unjustly left out, but the cure for their ills is simple; win more games, especially the winnable ones and the ones against other CFP contenders. If Michigan had defeated Iowa, it may have passed Washington and it certainly would have overtaken Ohio State had it beaten them. Oklahoma lost to Houston when ranked #3 and then lost its make good opportunity at home to Ohio State. Penn State lost to Pitt and got crushed by Michigan.

I agree with the power 5 + 3 at large. Once they get that settled they need to work on moving the pain in butt non power 5 schools into the power 5 conferences so they can lose enough to be non factors. It really needs to stop at 8 though otherwise it's going to be ridiculous.

For this year though I think they got it right

Regarding going to a Power Five plus three, in the near future there may be just a Power Four. We shall see what happens with the Big 12 in the long run. As far as teams from the Group of Five (Mountain West, American, Conference USA, MAC, and Sun Belt) joining the Power Five en masse goes, that's a non starter. There are a few schools that could find their way to bigger conferences, especially if the Big 12 sticks together and relents on not adding new members. However, most of those Group of Five schools have nothing close to the fan support and infrastructure necessary to be in the PAC-12, Big 12, Big Ten, SEC or ACC. Run of the mill Group of Five schools like Utah State, Akron, UTEP, Tulsa, and Georgia Southern aren't making the jump to the next level.

The NCAA needs to move Boise state, Houston, notre dame and anyone else who wants to think they can complete into a power conference and then tell the rest even if you go undefeated you don't mean shit.
