The Twins pretty much ignore their Washington Senators history apart from the acknowledgement that the team moved to Minnesota from DC and occasional other moments when it is unavoidable. For all intents and purposes, the team's history begins with the arrival of the team here in 1961. The current Senators have not officially adopted the previous versions of the team for things like records, but consider them part of their history. However, I think their Montreal Expos past gets lost in shuffle a bit.

Here is a relocation that wasn't. The Seattle Pilots joined the AL in 1969, but were playing in an expanded AAA park with badly undercapitalized ownership while the expected approval of what eventually became the Kingdome was stuck in political red tape. So practically on the eve of the 1970 season, that club became the Milwaukee Brewers. Parties in Seattle sued and eventually it was agreed that Seattle would get an AL team via relocation or expansion at the earliest possible opportunity once the new stadium was ready to open. Ahead of the 1976 season it looked like the White Sox would leave Chicago for Seattle with the A's moving from Oakland to Comiskey Park in Chicago. A's owner Charlie Finley lived and had his insurance agency in the Chicago area while the A's never drew as well as one would have expected during their dynasty era of the early 1970s. Bill Veeck then bought the White Sox to prevent this relocation scheme from occurring. The Seattle Mariners were added to the AL in 1977 along with the Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto nearly having scored the Giants a year or two earlier.

Original San Diego Padres owner C. Arnholt Smith committed one of the biggest banking frauds, which led to one of the biggest banking failures, in history in the early 1970s. His chicanery was detailed in a college business class text book of mine that otherwise had nothing to do with sports. The resulting bankruptcy put the Padres on the block and since they'd been a bust on the field and at the gate in San Diego, it looked like they'd be sold to a group which would then relocate the team to Washington DC for the 1974 season. McDonald's owner Ray Kroc bought the Padres at the last moment and kept them in San Diego.

It's a bit complicated, but the Coyotes should disavow their Winnipeg Jets history and consider the team an effective expansion club that began in 1996-97. The 1972-96 Winnipeg Jets history should then be adopted by the current version of the team. This has already happened in the NBA. The Charlotte Hornets moved to New Orleans effective the 2002-03 season for frankly idiotic reasons. The NBA realized this and it led to the creation of the Charlotte Bobcats effective 2004-05 season. People in Charlotte didn't warm up to the new team and didn't like that what they considered their team was in Louisiana. When Saints owner Tom Benson bought the New Orleans Hornets, he both was open to returning the Hornets name and legacy to Charlotte and getting a more locally relevant name. He got told no dice when asking the Utah Jazz for the name, so his team became the New Orleans Pelicans effective 2014-15 which is the official state bird and is a former minor league baseball team name. The Hornets name and legacy were returned to Charlotte and the Charlotte Hornets name once again lived, with the Bobcats name junked. The Hornets also got the 1988-2002 history back and consider it official with the 2002-04 period dormant and the history continued via the 2004-05 season and beyond. The Pelicans consider their history to have started in 2002-03 and make no claim to the Charlotte Hornets history before then.
