You young whipper-snappers don't even remember the Oakland Raiders moving the Los Angeles and for eleven years to boot.

What were some other teams in sports that have moved. There's probably a hundred.

Raiders started out at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco in 1960. In 1961 they moved to Candlestick Park, also in San Francisco. From 1962-1965 they played at Frank Youell Field, which was an Erector Set of a stadium built to house the Raiders while they built the Coliseum. This was the first time they actually played in Oakland. The rest, everybody should know.

Also, Forgot that the Original Ottawa Senators became the St Louis Eagles for 1 season and then shut down. I actually won a sports trivia contest on a local radio station with that years ago, asking what was the First NHL Franchise in STL.

As noted, the California Golden Seals became the Cleveland Barons in 1976-77 and effective 1977-78 the Barons merged with the Minnesota North Stars under the latter name and location. Barons owners George and Gordon Gund became the North Stars owners. In 1990 the Gunds began exploring the relocation of the North Stars to the Bay Area. New ownership led by former Whalers owner Howard Baldwin, who would eventually sell to the infamous Norm Green, took over the North Stars and the Gund brothers received the San Jose Sharks as an expansion team.

What occurred then was the effective dissolution of the Barons/North Stars merger. The Gunds walked away from the North Stars and got a new team in the Bay Area that the Seals/Barons had abandoned. The Sharks were then allowed to take 24 players from the North Stars system (4 from the NHL squad, 10 from the minor leagues, and 14 unsigned college, juniors, and international draft picks). The Sharks also got the North Stars' 2nd round pick in the entry draft. In exchange for giving up these players, the North Stars then were allowed to have 50% of the Sharks' expansion draft picks, 10 players in all. The two teams then went their separate ways.

Thanks Tamalie. I had no clue that the Sharks had roots to the North Stars.

Regarding the A's leaving Philadelphia after the 1954 season and the Phillies staying, this would be the equivalent in some respects of the Lakers moving out of LA and leaving it behind for the Clippers. The A's had won the World Series in 1910, 1911, 1913, 1929, and 1930. They won the AL pennant in 1902, 1905, 1914, and 1931. The A's were runners up in the AL in 1907, 1909, 1925, 1927, 1928, and 1932. During the same timespan the Phillies had a single NL pennant and were considered among the worst run teams in MLB.

The Great Depression hit both teams hard and the bad times continued through World War II. In 1948 the A's had a winning record and repeated that in 1949. Two of Connie Mack's sons saw this as a sign the good times were returning and heavily leveraged the club and Shibe Park to buy out their younger half brother with whom they'd feuded. The Athletics collapsed to 52-102 in 1950 and attendance sank out of sight while the Phillies were NL Champions with the exciting Whiz Kids team and tripled the A's attendance. Attempts to get the A's back on good financial footing failed and after 1954 the club was sold to new owners who moved it to Kansas City while the Phillies, to their great regret later as the neighborhood around it became one of the most dangerous ghettos in the nation, bought the ballpark.

The original Baltimore Orioles moved to New York and became the Highlanders in 1903, and eventually the Yankees.

The Braves from Milwaukee to Atlanta was one of the most cynical of all franchise relocations. The Braves going from Boston to Milwaukee made some sense. They were clearly the B team in Boston with little hope of ever overtaking the Red Sox. Suburban flight, difficult parking at Braves Field, and the rise of TV had killed the gates along with bad teams. When they arrived in Milwaukee they were an attendance powerhouse and almost immediately competitive with a World Series win in 1957 and an NL title in 1958. After that the team declined on the field and the gates went down too due to the new MLB team not being so new anymore and fan disinterest in supporting a losing team, something observers felt was born of the team being so good so soon that fans didn't put in the work of watching mediocre baseball enough to accept it as the norm. So the investors that brought the team to Milwaukee decided to relocate to Atlanta in search of another boom. There was no compelling reason why the Braves moved other than that. Owners who'd also fattened up on winning baseball and 2,000,000 plus attendance when that was like 3,500,000 now didn't like smaller yet acceptable gates and just bolted the city after only 13 seasons.

Are the 'Winnipeg Jets' that were the 'Atlanta Thrashers' the same Winnipeg Jets that are now the 'Arizona Coyotes'?
