I find suggestions like 'pitch clocks' and things to be comical.

Am I wrong in saying that 'deep inside' baseball thinks they want to speed things up
but doesn't know what to do or where to start?

It is too slow for me but I imagine that is mostly because I'm not a fan anymore. when I was young and interested it all seemed fine. If the true fans find it acceptable then it's fine, they are the ones supporting the sport; some changes might get a new fan or 2 but they won't last and you run the risk of pissing off your steady customer.

The NFL is long because of all the commercials. The NBA would be shorter if it wasn't for all the time outs and fouls to give in the last minute and a half of the 4th quarter. Take note that a NBA quarter is on 12 minutes and their games are only 48 minutes not 60 like the NFL and NHL.

Length is irrelevant, it's pace that I care about. Some baseball games have a horrible pace where it's 2-1 and it's taking 4 hours and no one is doing anything. But most of the time, the pace is fine.

It's become nearly impossible for me to sit through a football game. The pace is ALWAYS horrendous the last few years. Endless commercials, flags on every play, referee conferring, 5 seconds of action followed by mindless tedium. Football games seem to last at least 35 minutes longer than they did when I was a kid.

I think it's too slow also, and it may have something to do with teams working the pitch counts now.

Back in the day, starting pitchers were workhorses, some teams I remember had 3 man rotations (Tigers/Mickey Lolich, White Sox/Wilbur Wood comes to mind). Managers left them out to finish the games more often.

Now, with the emphasis being on pitch counts and the 5 man rotations, the game takes a bit longer to play out.

The batters today are also a little bit fussier about getting into the box and staying there.

If baseball did 2 things:

1. Keep the batter in the box between pitches and don't allow everyone to be a human rain delay.

2. Limit the amount of times the catcher can go out and confer with the pitcher.

You'd see games drop about 20 minutes in length and the pace not slow down so bad.

The game moves too slowly. The umpires need to use whatever avenues are available to them to stop players from wasting time, especially batters leaving the box. Game 7 of the World Series, in which the A's beat the Reds 3-2 in Cincinnati, took 2 hours and 50 minutes with the teams using 9 pitchers combined. That was considered long for the era. That game would take closer to 4 hours now. A regular season game between the Yankees and Red Sox is interminable, network ad breaks notwithstanding. Fans don't have the collective patience for this.

The NFL is terrible, I could be wrong but it seems like their is a commercial after every kick off and after every extra point or field goal. The flags, the reviews, the spotting of the ball after the review, the challenges. Then all of the next gen stats piled on just makes it brutal to watch. Now with the new targeting rule we are going to have to deal with even more breaks.

Tonight the White Sox beat the Yankees 4-1 in 2 hours 16 minutes, and the game was just under 2 hours going into a long 9th inning in which the Yankees left the bases loaded. Miguel Gonzalez and Luis Severino both pitched at least 8 innings and worked quickly. That's still the recipe for a quick game.
