Rumor courtesy of the awesome profootballtalk.com (always a great read)

VICK IS BEHIND BARS

Though he's not scheduled to be sentenced to federal prison until December 10, Falcons quarterback Mike Vick reportedly has commenced his sentence prematurely, presumably in the hopes of getting out sooner.

Kelly Naqi of ESPN reports that Vick has checked in early, three full weeks before the sentencing hearing.

Vick is expected by some to get between 12 and 18 months for his guilty plea to conspiracy charges relating to gambling and dog fighting.  The maximum can be five years, and he has waived his ability to appeal the final decision of Judge Henry Hudson.

The FAN590 in Toronto is reporting that Vick has been
sentenced to 23 months.

I personally think the sentence was too long. The judge just wanted to drop the hammer, which is his perogative. I think 15-18 mos. would've been fine.

If Vick hadn't lied to everybody under the sun - Blank, Goodell, the authorities - about his trangressions, he might have gotten a lighter sentence. If he hadn't been caught with dope in his system, he might have found a little leniency.

Vick bankrolled an illegal operation for five years. He was perfectly willing to throw his friends under the bus by claiming that they and they alone were responsible for the deaths of the dogs. He initially claimed he knew nothing about the festivities at all. It wasn't until he flunked a lie detector test that he began coming clean.

He also didn't turn himself in until he saw the penalties that his buddies were getting. How else to make yourself appear to be understanding and culpable? Turn yourself in early.

Agreed he assed up to get the stiff sentence. Still, the prosecutor suggested a max of 18 mos and the judge tacked on another five for the reasons you mentioned. The more I think about it, the more I see the judge's reasoning (if that's what it was) but, still, two+ years behind bars seems stiff for the crime.
