MIAMI (AP) -- For the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the season might begin sooner than expected, thanks to Hurricane Irma.

The NFL is considering moving the Dolphins-Bucs opener in Miami to another site or earlier this week because of the hurricane, a person familiar with the discussions said Monday. The person confirmed the discussions to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the league and teams aren't talking publicly about the options.

Switching the game to Thursday or Friday is being considered, the person said, because Irma could threaten South Florida over the weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT Sunday.

Playing the game at another site Sunday is also being discussed, the person said. The teams share the same bye week in November, but would prefer to avoid moving the game to that weekend, because it would mean both teams would play 16 weeks in a row.

If the game is moved to earlier this week, the decision must be made by Tuesday because of the logistics involved, the person said. The decision will be made by the league with input from the teams, the person said.

"We will monitor the situation throughout the week and remain in close communication with both clubs and local officials," said Michael Signora, vice president of football communications for the NFL.

Dolphins coach Adam Gase said he has received updates on the status of the game but declined to discuss options.

"They tell us when to play and show up," Gase said. "We just kind of wait and see right now."

Miami receiver Kenny Stills said there had been talk among the players about a possible change in the schedule.

"We know the situation, and people are talking about the game being moved," Stills said. "All we can do is get prepared for this game, and when it comes, it comes. If they tell us to play tomorrow, we play tomorrow. I'm good with whatever they got."

Another concern for the Dolphins is potential damage to their stadium. A new canopy added last year was built to withstand a Category 4 hurricane.

Caution and contingency planning are rightfully being taken into account, but at this moment the storm is not looking to hit south Florida directly. Puerto Rico and Caribbean islands to the west of it are in greater jeopardy. Whether by design or coincidence, the Dolphins and Bucs sharing a bye week makes moving the game to November the obvious scenario should the storm be a factor. My guess is it will be played as scheduled.

The NFL has announced the Bucs-Dolphins game won't take place Sunday in Miami. What hasn't been announced is if the game will move to November when both teams fortuitously have a bye week or will go to a neutral site on Sunday or perhaps Monday night if extra time is needed to secure and set up a stadium for the match up. Going to November seems like the logical move, but there's some concern about the two teams then effectively having no bye week and playing 16 consecutive games. I still say it gets postponed to later rather than played someplace like Atlanta or Jacksonville on Sunday or Monday.

How much of Florida will be hit by hurricane Irma cause if it's only south Florida that will be affected then I can see Camping world stadium aka Citrus Bowl as a good alternative site for the game.

The NFL would likely only move it to another NFL stadium. When a Jets at Bills game in 2014 was moved due to too much snow for the league's tastes, options like Toronto and Syracuse were nixed because they were not "NFL ready" on short notice. So it wound up in Detroit.

There are already fans of both the Bucs and Dolphins complaining about the lack of a bye week, but with both teams having the same bye week in November it was best to move it to then. Had the game gone to some neutral site this week, due to the team having what would have been a home game in London, the Fins would only have played 6 of 10 games in Miami.

The Dolphins get a the week off and then play the Chargers (who play Monday night) sounds like a scheduling advantage to me

The impact of the missing bye week for the Dolphins is the had a road Monday night game at Carolina followed by a week off ahead of going to New England. Now they have to host the Bucs on a short week coming off the road MNF game and don't get the extra time to prep for the Patriots. It's honestly nothing for any fan to get mad about.

The Bucs fans have a bit more of a bone to pick. Losing that off week means the team has a stretch in which it plays 4 road games in 5 weeks, including 3 road games consecutively. This is also part of a run in which the Bucs have 6 out of 8 games on the road. The nice trade off is a schedule packed with home games early and late.

Until they make week nine a 'bye' week for the entire league (will never happen) there will always be teams playing with more rest than the other, west coast teams flying to the east coast back-to-back weeks, teams playing three straight games on the road, etc

Like the league created the hurricane. The fans need to give the league a break on this one.
