"Where's my football?" - Vince McMahon, XFL press conference, 2001.
It appears that if your football was the XFL, the answer is that it's indeed coming back, soon.

WWE's Production team has been working on video material geared towards promoting the impending return of the XFL of late, PWInsider.com has learned.

The current plan, according to numerous sources, is for the football league to officially return in 2020.  The delay is to build a proper infrastructure, including hiring coaches and players.  As you might remember, the original incarnation of the XFL launched rather quickly after it was announced.  Vince McMahon is not going to make the same mistake twice.

Last year, McMahon launched a new company, Alpha Entertainment, to pursue a number of potential entertainment endeavors as well as a potental relaunch of the XFL.  It's quite interesting that despite the planned relaunch being outside of WWE's auspices, their production team has been working on video content related to the planned return of the football league.

The original XFL launched in 2001 as a joint venture between NBC and WWE, existing for one season.

An ESPN 30For30 documentary about the rise and fall of the league included footage of McMahon and NBC Executive Dick Ebersol discussing their memories of their partnership in the league over dinner and the idea of launching it today.  During those discussions, McMahon admitted that he had "recently" had talks with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones about the idea of a "minor league NFL."  It certainly appears that instead, the XFL will rise again.

PWInsider:

Vince McMahon announced that the XFL would relaunch in 2020.

McMahon said he was going to take questions today but also ask questions of players, fans, and coaches on how they would re-imagine the game.

The new XFL will be fan-centric with "lots of innovations." He promised a shorter, faster, family friendly, easier to understand game.

They will open with 8 teams and a 40 man roster.

The quality of the human being will be as important as the quality of the player.

Fans will be able to customize in how they watch the games on big screens and mobile devices.

Brian Fritz asked Vince McMahon why now was the time to bring it back. Vince said there are 7 months without football.

They have two years to get ready and to showcase a better quality of the play in comparison to last time.

They are going to reimagine how they distribute the game. The XFLsep will probably be delivered in a combination of ways. They know there is interest but no talks yet.

Vince was asked how this will affect his day to day control with WWE. He said that there will be no change.to his role as Chairman of the Board and COO of WWE.

There will be no crossover with WWE talents or content with the XFL.

Vince said he won't be out in front of the XFL and he's going to hire executives to handle everything. This may be the last time we see him talking about the XFL. He doesn't want to be in front of it.

Vince said that the NFL kneeling controversy had no bearing on the decision to bring the XFL back. He's had plans for this for some time.

The decision to launch this separately from WWE, he said that the initial $100 million investment was "too rich" for WWE.

They will announce cities involved in the future.

Vince was asked about concussions and CTE and any plans on how they are going to keep players safe. He said reimagining it includes safety. They are going to make it as safe an environment as possible. He's going to bring in experts and listen to medical experts and heed their advice.

Vince was asked if President Trump would support this. Vince said he doesn't know if Trump will support the league. He said the XFL will have nothing to do with politics or social issues.

He declined to comment on whether San Diego would be a market.

Vince was asked why he wasn't concerned about football being oversaturated. Vince said the demand is there. It's going to be a faster, fan-centric game.

Vince was asked if he was going to suspend players if they speak out sociallly. Vince said there would be rules and players will be expected to honor those rules. He said the national anthem is a time-honored tradition and whatever their rules are, they will have to be abided by. There are lots of other places to speak on issues such as social media. When they step on the field, they will be about football.

There are lots of factors involved in choosing markets but they are nowhere near that yet.

Vince said they would be going after NFL cities. You want to play football in football stadiums. They doesn't mean they couldn't play at baseball stadiums.

Vince said every city is on their radar.

They are going to listen to football experts. They want to have a faster game that can be played in two hours. They may include removing the half-time.

McMahon said the reaction to the XFL ESPN documentary had no bearing on this as there has been talk about relaunching the XFL for years.

There was talk about giving the league a different name, but they felt there was equity in the name and they like the way it sounds. It's a cool name.

Vince said all options, including streaming and social media platforms are available to them that were not available to them the first time around.

Vince was asked if they would allow "He Hate Me" style jerseys. Vince said he didn't know about that - "We aren't there yet" but said it was amazing that people still remember Rod Smart. They are going to listen to experts and fans and media.

Vince said its a time honored tradition to stand for the national anthem in every country and feels its fair to expect people to honor those traditions.

The teams will be all new names, but they aren't restrained from bringing old team names and concepts back if that ideas are pitched.

Vince was asked whether players such as Tim Tebow and Colin Kapernick might be invited. Vince said any level of criminality is not something they want and said if a player got a DUI, they wouldn't be allowed to play. It's about the quality of the player as a person.

Vince was asked if Kapernick would be invited. Vince said that anyone who played by the rules would be invited.

Vince said that anyone who signed on would be well aware of the rules before they signed.

Vince said there would be no crossover with pro wrestling announcers used as announcers for the XFL.

VInce said he's going to hire professionals who know what they are doing - he's not going to be out front with the League.

He did not seek Linda McMahon's input before making the decision to launch this.

Vince said he was once again going to seek feedback and create and reimagine the game of football to excite the audience.

Removing halftime would be ridiculous. Players need that time to physically recover. Coaches need that time to address the team as a whole with more time to make specific adjustments. Also, the 40 man rosters are very small. The NFL hasn't rolled that light since about 1973. It means fewer substitutions and more regulars on special teams. That in turn means more aches and bumps, if not injuries. Playing a game in two hours would be impossible unless some fundamental change is made such as keeping the clock running after plays we now take for granted as clock stoppers. Getting the game back to three hours makes more plausible sense and can be done with clock tweaks that won't be as dramatic, not to mention having shorter ad breaks which could be compensated for via ads painted or projected on the field plus sideline ads beyond the team benches.

The USFL, not universally but in many markets, showed there is an appetite for spring and summer football. However, the conditions that enabled the USFL to thrive are not as present as in the 1980s. I think this is not a good idea although initially it seems that some of the mistakes made with the XFL won't be repeated, or at least the initial goal is to not repeat them.

By the way, Vince claiming he did not ask for Linda's input sounds fishy right away. I can't imagine they haven't discussed the matter in some fashion.

I didn't see the press conference, but obviously he was specifically asked that question, and it's a dick question.  I'm sure that's why Vince just said no.  Of all the things to ask, someone chose to ask if he got his wife's permission?  I understand she's his business partner as well, but it didn't need to be asked.  I'm sure they discussed it and I'm sure Vince did what he wants to do.  Linda has her own stuff going on and isn't too concerned about this.

Also, it's such a toxic environment to discuss football with reporters at all because even going in you knew there would be tons of political and kneeling questions, and it really distracts from anything more substantive to talk about.  By 2020, I hope/doubt this will still be as big an issue anyway.

Johnny Manziel has already tweeted "#XFL @VinceMcMahon"

But he has a criminal record so according to Vince he's already disqualified.  I'd love to see Vince really keep out every DUI and domestic assault conviction though.  You already have a pool of players not good enough to be in the NFL or too controversial for the NFL, and Vince is going to take that group, including most of the high profile names, and slash it in half because of criminal behavior?  He's going to need to trim the rosters down to 11 men playing both ways and special teams with no subs just to field teams.

I can't imagine the XFL would turn away Johnny Manziel. The criminality thing sounds less like a reason to turn a guy away than it is to be tough and cut someone if it happens while the player is in the league.

If the XFL comes back, it needs to tone down some things. I did not like hearing how Vince wants to have “fan-centric” involvement. I do not want more fan interaction. I think he will try to mimic his past wrestling approach and try to appeal to a new audience, and this will end in failure, again.

Must be fun to have enough money to piss away on a bad idea that's already failed once.

McMahon was born in North Carolina. Panthers are up for sale. NFL will say give up on XFL and you can buy the Panthers.

The NFL will NEVER approve Vince as an owner. Absolutely never.

The NFL won't approve someone who has had sex allegations against him to replace someone who is selling over allegations.

I'm being generous with the 50/50 only because Vince is a stupid idiot when he gets stubborn about these things. Otherwise he's 2 years away from opening a league that he largely only had vague generalities about yesterday. A lot of football leagues get announced, only to have nothing happen. Like USFL 2.
