I always thought Bob Horner was a very good ballplayer.  I remember when he came up with the Braves and did not even stop in at the minors.

The guy had a great batting stance and seemed disciplined at the plate.  In my opinion, he always looked like he was out until 3 a.m. the night before with his head against the jukebox.  Classic beer drinker look.  Hey, for all I know, he may never have drank a drop of alcohol in his life.

The only negative thing about the guy was his always being injured.  I think the injuries really impacted his potential numbers and also impacted how he has been regarded when people look back at his career.

Yep against the Expos and still lost. I watched that clip and that is what made me post this about Horner.

Growing up in that time frame, I kinda associate him with Dale Murphy, Ken Oberkfell, Bruce Benedict, Rafael Ramirez and that '82 team that was really good but couldn't beat the Cardinals. They kinda stumbled after that, and the Braves went down the tubes until they resurrected themselves in 90 and then made the playoffs in '91.

I used to like that ‘81 and ‘82 team. Was Joe Torre the manager or was that when they brought in Chuck Tanner? (Ugh) Chris Chambliss at first base.  I think 1981 was when my area first got WTBS.

Pretty sure Torre was the manager in 82.
However, I might be confused on Oberkfell.  He was on the Cards at the time, right? Not to be confused with Terry Pendleton who was on the Cards and eventually went to the Braves.  I have to google Oberkfell though because for some reason I recall he ended up on Atlanta at some point.

Bob Horner is a guy who got screwed badly by the owners colluding against free agents in contravention of the collective bargaining agreement in the mid 1980s. In 1986 he batted .272, had 27 HRs, and 87 RBIs on an Atlanta Braves team that didn't have much going for it at the plate apart from him and Dale Murphy. However, the only team to offer him a contract for 1987 was the Braves who tried to lowball him.

The Crocketts owned the AA team in Charlotte at the time and made a somewhat comedic offer for Horner to play for the team and train to wrestle for JCP. Horner went to Japan to play for the Yakult Swallows, having a pretty good season. He came back to MLB with the Cardinals in 1988, but got hurt and wound up not playing after that year. His last MLB game came when he was 30.

After the owners were proven to have colluded illegally, they made a settlement with the players and Horner was awarded over $7,000,000 which was the single largest amount given to any individual player. The number was based on the contract value he'd have likely attained had the market not been rigged to prevent it.

I am still surprised no owner broke away from the pack and signed some of these guys.

I always liked him. He had great power but was always hurt. He was a great 1-2 punch with Murphy.

I watched a lot of Braves games on TBS in that era.

Claudell Washington was another Brave from that era that wasn't mentioned.
