Speaking of the 2017-2018 Philadelphia 76ers.

Let's get one thing out of the way. They didn't 'throw games'. They threw 'entire seasons'.

Thy drafted high every year, dealt anyone with a salary (collected 'assets') stripped the team down to nothing and now have a young exciting contender for years to come. Probably a player or two away from but the point is -- the tanking 'worked' (or is 'working')

Some sports talking heads speculate that LeBron might join the 76ers this summer.

Same with the Leafs. Worst team in the NHL 2 years ago. Set their best Point total this season in their history. THeir top 3 scorers 2 years in a row are their top 3 draft picks in 2017, 2016 and 2015.

Yep, you gotta get lucky but the more 'assets' (draft picks) you have you increase your chances. it's a numbers game.

Yea, that was Hinkie's whole strategy. Increase your chances to get lucky. People focus on Simmons and Embiid because they are transcended talents but the process also resulted in Saric. Guys like Covington and McDonnell who are serviceable probably would not be in the NBA today without the minutes they received while the team was awful. They improved.

It was rough though to live through as a hoops fan. The team is set up well for the next 7 or 8 years. I do think Lebron wants to come to Philly. Basically, he wants to be with the best team that has a chance to win against the west. He could go to the Lakers who are obviously in the west already but even with James the Lakers would not be good enough to compete with the Warriors and Rockets.

The Sixers are probably a player short of realistically being able to beat the Warriors or Rockets. With Lebron, they could win multiple championships. Covington becomes a bench guy and James plays the wing and could be the point forward when Simmons isn't in the game. Just all kinds of things they could do.

Hinike also traded away top young talent for even more assets. He took on bad contracts and got 1st round picks for doing so. He was a master and the reason on why the 76ers are where they are today. Hinike and Brett Brown.

I watched almost every game that Brett Brown has been the coach of. The guy has a system and they play it to the tee. I honesty think that LeBron could come to Philly.

I was doubting the Process when it brought in Michael Carter-Williams.  But when they got Embiid, I was certain they were gonna be fucked the way Greg Oden and Sam Bowie fucked Portland.  But when Embiid healed up, I got excited because I truly believe he’s the most talented all-around basketball player to come out since LeBron. I really think that Philly wins it this year because they just don’t know that there not supposed to win and they just have no fucks to give.

I guess if you tank enough, it can eventually work. I was never a fan of the process, believing it wasn't necessary to tank that hard and that doing so also didn't guarantee success. The 76ers are a team that had several starts and stops en route to the top with Embiid, Simmons, and Noel all missing their entire rookie seasons (and a second as well in the case of Embiid) while Fultz played a mere 14 games as a rookie. Joel Embiid has played in 94 of a possible 328 pro games and if we toss the two injury missed rookie seasons, has still only played 94 of a possible 164. I fear he will end up like Bill Walton, a legend and undeniable talent whose career will end early. I'd stay away if I was LeBron and I'd start contingency planning if I was running the Sixers.

I don't know if you have to "tank" as much as you need to be avoid being mediocre and winding up in the middle of the draft order.

Pittsburgh Penguins got good the first time because they drafted Lemieux and Jagr as top five picks and used other high picks as trade chattel -- Doug Bodger and Darrin Shannon turned into Barrasso and Craig Simpson and Chris Joseph were flipped for Paul Coffey.

Current version of the Penguins was built on lottery picks Crosby, Malkin and Fleury (just left this season).

You have to make good moves beyond those marquee draft picks, but they're the foundation for winning.
