Chris Bosio still can't grasp why he was sitting in his Detroit apartment Thursday afternoon instead of on the bench at Comerica Park, unable to accept his abrupt firing as the Detroit Tigers pitching coach.

One day, he’s making a joke by his cubicle in the Tigers’ coaches office, and two days later he’s fired, informed that he violated the team’s zero-tolerance policy, saying he “made insensitive remarks to a team employee.’’
“I’m crushed,’’ said Bosio, who plans to hire an attorney and determine whether a wrongful termination lawsuit will be filed. “I’m absolutely crushed. I still can’t believe it’s gotten to this point.

“I’m in shock.’’

Bosio revealed to USA TODAY Sports that he was fired for using the word “monkey" in a conversation that was overheard by - but not involving - an African-American clubhouse attendant.

Bosio insists he was not using the word in a racial and disparaging context, and that it was not directed toward the clubhouse attendant. He says he referring to injured pitcher Daniel Stumpf, a white pitcher from Humble, Texas.

“Someone in our coaches’ room asked me (Monday afternoon) about Stumpf,’’ Bosio said. “And I said, “Oh, you mean, 'Spider Monkey.' That’s his nickname. He’s a skinny little white kid who makes all of these funny faces when he works out.

“The kid thought we were talking about him. He got all upset. He assumed we were talking about him. I said, “No, no, no. We’re talking about Stumpf.’
“And that was it. I swear on my mom and dad’s graves, there was nothing else to it.’’
Bosio said that he was questioned about the incident Tuesday afternoon in a private meeting with Tigers GM Al Avila, assistant GM and general counsel John Westhoff, and manager Ron Gardenhire. They asked him point-blank if he used the derogatory word.
“I didn’t deny it,’’ Bosio said. “But it was directed at Stumpf, and the face he makes when he lifts weights. That’s it.’’

Bosio, in the first year of a two-year contract, showed up to work Wednesday, was summoned into a conference room and fired.
“Al said, we got all of our information, and we’re firing you because of your insensitive comments,’’ Bosio said. “I said, “Comments? There was one comment. And it wasn’t even directed at the kid.’

“Al said, “We and Major League Baseball have a zero-tolerance policy. I said, “Al, I don’t have any issues with anybody. I didn’t cross the line. I’m really sorry, but that’s not my intent. I can’t believe this.
“My God.’ ’’

Avila, when reached during the Tigers’ game Thursday against the Oakland A’s, declined to discuss specifics of the firing.
“We know what we did, and why we did it, and we’ll see where it goes from there,’’ Avila said. “The action we took was appropriate. There were things involved. But I can’t comment any further.’’

The Tigers, Bosio said, have yet to inform him whether they will pay the remainder of his contract.

Bosio, 54, who pitched 11 years in the big leagues, and spent the last six years as the Chicago Cubs’ pitching coach - a period in which they won the World Series and reached the NLCS three times - is widely regarded as one of the game’s finest pitching coaches. He realizes he’ll never get his job back with the Tigers, but still wants to be a pitching coach.

“I’ve got protect myself someway,’’ Bosio says, “because this is damaging as hell to me. I’ve got to fight for myself. Everyone knows this is not me. I didn’t use any profanity. There was no vulgarity. The N-word wasn’t used. No racial anything. It was a comment, and a nickname we used for a player.

“This kid and I had a great relationship. This kid played jokes on me all spring, and I told him, “Now you’re offended, because you heard the word “monkey, or spider monkey,’’ and it's not even directed at you.’’

“We crack fat jokes on our trainer everyday. All kinds of things are said in a baseball clubhouse. And for this to happen to me?
“I don’t know what else to say, but I know I don’t deserve this.’’

I"m going to make sure next time someone I work with calls me a "Canuck" I'll file an HR complaint and get them fired. I hope it's a certain nurse who says it.

My great-grandmother used to call me her little monkey all the time.  I've used the word when playing with my son on occasion.  Just this past weekend I bought my son a monkey pacifier to go along with his giraffe, elephant, lion, and dog and I made money noises when giving it to him.  I wonder if that would've gotten me fired from someplace.  A monkey is a fucking animal that actually exists, it is not a derogatory word.  Whether or not saying the word is racist is fairly obvious in context. People are fucking crazy.

And the irony that this is Ty Cobb's team should not be lost on anyone either.

Yea, this was absolute BS, horseshit and shows how far gone we are when the guy wasn't even allowed to explain himself.

As a young man, I was bitter because I heard the N word all time (most of you know, I am half black but have a white complexion). I let the shit affect me. I went to a Minister (a black man) and he said to me, "if you are going to make an issue of this every time in a negative, life will be long and unhappy. You need to use it as motivation".

The worst part is that he wasn't even talking about the offended party and there was no malice at all. This clubhouse kid is living with a victim mentality. In a locker room environment, shit gets said all the time. Probably not racist stuff much anymore but it isn't a place for people who are easily offended.

If anyone ever deserved to sue, it is Bosio. These zero tolerance polices are beyond absurd.

News of this just broke in Detroit this morning. For the past few days, we didn't know what he said and to whom...Now that it is out there, I say he's got a good case to sue.

This board is becoming funny and stupid.

He is lying he got caught and when pressed about the incident nobody corroborated his version of the story and the pitcher threw him under the bus by saying "i've never knew my nickname was Spider Monkey"

You have to be the biggest fucking asshole I've seen on this board if you truly believe he was calling the clubhouse attendant a monkey.   Especially when you make broad assumptions like you've been doing for the past month and including this post.  You have no idea what was said behind closed doors and you also claim that not only is Bosio lying (a man you've never met, by the way), but that the pitcher threw him under the bus when in fact he wasn't even involved in the meeting or conversation.

Keep race baiting, loser.  Racism will live forever if you have your way!

If that's not throwing him under the bus then i don't know what is. People like you crack me up if you think he is telling the truth fine, i think he is lying and my opinion is working with HR in IT department i highly doubt they would fire him if the other people in the room and the pitcher actually  gave credence to his version but hey using experience and common sense makes me an asshole and race baiting loser.

Tell your friend i am sorry he got fired, i got a job for him with a little league team in Queens, NY

It is entirely plausible that he would not know they called him that. I think the whole story is going to come out. Maybe you are right but I think the chances are pretty slim that your version is the truth.

I have been party to a lot of these things in my life, both on a personal level and a professional level as an employer. This sounds like someone took something the wrong way that wasn't about him at all. My suspicion is that the locker room attendant will find a reason to sue pretty soon.

If this goes to court, then the people in the room will tell what happened. Right now, they are put in a position today where they become targets if they get involved. That is where we are right now. All sides need to calm the fuck down and actually start talking to each other.

BTW - every situation is different. Too many people are falling into the trap of just sticking to whatever their team says no matter what. That is why both conservatism and liberalism are failed ideals. Neither stays true to who they are.

Racism certainly exists. We have a POTUS who by his own words is a racist (wanting to take an American born judge off a case on his college because he had Mexican heritage - sorry Trumpers - his own words aren't in dispute) and doesn't even realize it. However, that doesn't mean every situation is like that.

Especially in pro sports these days. There are so many black people around that a coach would have to be out of his mind nuts to call a black person that name.

It is situations like this that give the real racists license to do their bullshit.

Somebody in the Tigers locker room would have beaten the piss out of Bosio if he actually did what a certain person here is inferring he did.  There is no question about it.  Also, if Bosio was somebody that had issues with race, you'd think they would have surfaced at some point between 1986 and today and there's no way that he would have made it to become a Major League pitching coach...that would have gotten him blackballed in the minors.  As a player in the '80s and '90s he could have gotten away with a lot more than as a coach in the '00s and '10s.  Even fifteen years ago he would have been fired on the spot or had his ass handed to him if he called a person of color a monkey.  It didn't happen.
