If the players don’t care doesn’t that bring it down a little bit? Back in the old days you could probably get interviews from willie or whoever about how they were going to give the reds or Phillies the business nowadays I’m sure most players are more PC about that type of thing.

I feel like there's no edge to the players anymore. It's like the "AAU" mentality. These guys all grow up friends, they want to play with their friends like it's a beer league. There's no "sports hatred" anymore. No wanting to go out and kick the shit out of the other team.

That's a good one- and it really irks me when I see Miguel Cabrera jawing with infielders when he's on base!  I get it that they all have inside jokes, but the competitor in me wants to see a little more edge.   And don't even get me started on my anger when Prince Fielder was on the Tigers!!!  The Tigers would be losing in the 9th inning, he'd hit a meaningless single, and then swap stories with the other 1st baseman!!  And during the playoffs no less!!  Just my griping!!

This came up recently in my neighborhood; 2 families have middle school aged boys playing baseball and have been for some time; they both have hitting coaches and pitching coaches and play year round. The miles these kids are putting on their bodies has to catch up with them. I know this type of stuff has been going on for a long time but I can imagine it’s good for the human body to train that much.

I asked the dads about it and their comment was to be the best you have to train. I don’t disagree as I played competitive sports thru high school but does a 6th grader need to work on pitching year around? It’s not my kids so I don’t really care but it seems excessive.

Good observation. I've read that some teenage pitchers are actually having preemptive Tommy John surgery so they can get it out of the way. Plus throwing breaking pitches at 15 creates an unnatural strain. Pile that on top of trying to throw everything in the 90's and it's a recipe for disaster that only genetic freaks can withstand.

Regarding players not hating the opponents anymore, when there was no free agency and guys played their entire careers for one team, maybe two if there was a trade, that would happen. With free agency, teams are more apt to move guys whose contracts have short years and players are going to follow the money which is enormous. The days when someone like Rich Dauer would spend 10 seasons for the Orioles or Manny Sanguillen would play 13 of his 14 seasons for the Pirates are over. You can build a hatred of the Cardinals if you play with the same guys on the Cubs for 10 years, but when you're a Cub for 4 years amidst great turnover and then you end up a Cardinal after a stint with the Tigers in between, you won't feel the same emotion. Guys still want to win, but the fans can't project their hatred of rival teams onto players so easily anymore or have the players feeling the same way legitimately.

The sport isn't hip.

True, but it could be more hip. It's all about marketing.
