Not sure of the years, but Luc Robitaille, Brett Hull, Marian Hossa and many others were picked up to varying degrees of team success. Not sure if Dominic Hasek was a free agent pick up or an off-season trade, but he was great until Osgood supplanted him as the top-dog in the nets.

Hasek came in a trade for Slava Kozlov.
This was going to be my post.  Holland grabbed every big star Chris Chelios, Wendell Clark, Ulf Samuelson and Bill Ranford all came at the trade deadline in 99 (I think).  The Wings played well and looked to be on their way to their 3rd straight Cup, but Ozzie broke his hand in the playoffs and the team fizzled.

They also brought in Matthieu Schneider and Curtis Joseph but didn't win the Cup.

The Pistons traded Adrian Dantley for Mark Aguirre on their way to back to back titles.  They also traded for Rasheed Wallace at the deadline to help win a title.

The Angels signed Reggie Jackson & won the AL West in 82.  The Angels signed Albert Pujols & Josh Hamilton to huge deals, but they didn't lead the way to glory.

The Lions signed... well... ya know... they're the fucking Lions.

The Edmonton Oilers buy Eddie Mio, Peter Driscoll, and a guy named Wayne Gretzky, from the Indianapolis Racers, for $700,000.

Worked out pretty well, I'd reckon.

The Indianapolis Racers were owned by a guy named Nelson Skalbania. He later owned and sank the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL and the Calgary Boomers of the NASL in the early 1980s. I think he was also the guy who moved the Flames from Atlanta to Calgary before getting into a jam and having to sell. He was the classic example of the guy in that era who'd made some money in something other than sports and then tried make himself famous by being a flamboyant sports team owner even though he lacked the capital and know how to be a George Steinbrenner type.

He made a big splash out of signing Wayne Gretzky for the struggling WHA team, but it was rather pointless because, as good as Wayne was, no one in Indiana had heard of him or knew how great he was supposed to become. It meant nothing to the team at the gate or in getting sponsorships. So Skalbania sent Gretzky and the other to Edmonton for cash and folded the team after 17 games.

Cynically you could speculate that Skalbania knew the Racers were going to lose a ton of money in 1978-79 and had no chance of getting into the NHL in any merger agreement. So he signed Gretzky for a short period knowing that he had a big resale value, sold him for a bunch of money, and then folded the team from in order to walk away with the lion's share of the Gretzky sale proceeds without losing it trying to prop up the Racers for the full season.

Skalbania owned the Oilers for a year in the WHA days, before selling it to Peter Puck

If your name is Peter Puck, you're obligated to buy a hockey team.  Or become a porn star.

It was. It was also PP's nickname.
