Every game everywhere, the puck is behind the net. The fans start pounding on the glass. Why?

Probably just for their 15 seconds of fame. The play is behind the net so the tv cameras will zoom in and someone gets on tv.
More likely it is maybe an attempt to distract the opposition so the home player (s) can get the puck.

I can't believe that the players can even hear the noise, it's so loud in the rink.  Eventually, somebody will break the glass and an innocent bystander will get hurt, and they'll ban pounding on the glass.  It's bound to happen, although the hockey crowd is wired a little differently and may just fight it out on the spot and leave it at the rink.

I've never sat against the boards and glass at an NHL game, but have for high school hockey and some of the pounding on the glass is just due to the excitement of the game being so close to you and the idea that the players are getting physical against the boards. The glass is really heavy and isn't likely to shatter due to fans hitting it. For the amount of contact the players make with it, instances of it breaking are relatively few in number and the glass is like auto glass in the sense that it is more likely to spider web when broken and broken shards won't be so small and sharp as would be the case of a regular window or drinking glass breaking.
