Chad Johnson pussed out and didn't show up for his tryout yesterday. No surprise, another diva WR.

PWInsider:
The XFL have established 'Team 9', a 40-man squad of replacement players, which the 8 teams can call up from to fill up an open spot anytime during the season. The team will be based in Dallas, and will practice at Globe Life Park, home of the Dallas Renegades. The concept of 'Team 9' was copied from NFL Europe.

USA Today has an article noting that each of the 6 XFL officiating crews will have at least one woman on the crew.

I like the extra team idea of house players. Let’s face injuries are going to happen so why not have a built in solution.

I think the NFL proper should do something similar especially as concussion protocols tighten

I believe they are making the same mistake they did years ago.

No preseason.

The quality of play will get ripped, etc

Six days after the Super Bowl, is off-brand football really what the American sports viewers want? I would have thought they would give people some time to miss the game first.

I agree with this. I think it would work better as a spring league.

Let me say this - I know that I’m not looking at a Football field and I’m assuming that the DC MLS team plays here...but damn. I don’t care if they gave the tickets away for free, there is a solid crowd at this first game.

Given how bad the Redskins have been over the past several years, DC is desperate to get a winning football team no matter what league it is in.

DC has a good defense and solid special teams. They need to work on their offense though.

WAAAAAY too many rule changes just for the sake of change and not to better the game. A team is penalized for punting the ball out of bounds. Stupid. And the PAT should be from the 1 yard line. Too many cheesy gimmicks.

If a kickoff goes out of bounds or not kicked past the 20 yard line, the ball is spotted at the kicking team's 45 instead of the receiving team's 40. What! That's change for the sake of change. The NFL rule is much better. And the clock still rolls after the ball is spotted after a penalty!! LA couldn't kick a FG before the half after a penalty because the clock ran out before they could snap the ball. Bush league amateur hour.

I'm going to check out some of the New York game today between commercials on the Nascar Clash race. I heard some good things yesterday about the quality of play. I heard nothing about the rule changes until reading this thread now.

What you have written above just sounds exhausting to understand. What did you mean when you said the PAT should be from the 1 yard line?

Are you just saying that is what you think should happen if it goes out of bounds? What is the penalty? 5 yards?

That kickoff rule is giving me a headache just reading it. As far as the clock running after the ball is spotted after a penalty, I have to see that in real time to form an opinion.

As far as the PAT/extra point conversion: it's 1 point from the 2 yard line, 2 points from the 5, and 3 points from the 10. Just my personal opinion, I think the 1 point conversion should be from the 1 yard line.

Historically in football, if the kickoff goes out of bounds (or not kicked past the 20 in XFL), the ball is spotted at the receiving teams 40 yard line. In the XFL the ball is spotted at the kicking teams 45 yard line. That's a big 15 yard diffence!

And so many of their rules contradict each other. If they change their kickoff rules for safety reasons, than why do they "penalize" the kicking team for a touchback? Instead of spotting the ball on the 20 or 25, a touchback is spotted at the 35.

Another contradiction is if all these rules are to favor scoring, then why the hell would they only give each team two timeouts per half when every other football league has traditionally had three. That's what I mean by change for the sake of change.

As far as the level of play, no complaints at all. It is light years ahead of XFL 2001. My only real complaint is the dropped passes, and even then there weren't much more than a typical NFL Week 1.
