And Roger Clemens?  Steroids didn’t give him pinpoint control nor protect his elbow from the effects of consistent throwing of the splitter.  In fact, steroids should’ve made that elbow more prone to injury.
Gotta disagree with you on this point my brotha. Pitchers would turn to the gas because of the amazing recovery benefits they would get. If the pitcher had good mechanics to begin with, it may allow a 40 year old power pitcher to keep his fastball in the high 90's. Also, the resting between starts would always have optimal value because the roids would allow him to completely heal over the four days. Clemens at 40,41, and 42 was pitching an average of 212 innings. At 41 he has the ridiculous winning percentage of .818 and struck out 218 in 214 IP. He couldn't have done this unless he was completely revitalized between starts.
I agree with everything that you say here.   It’s 100% accurate in my opinion, especially the part about the juice aiding in recovery.  But my point about the splitter you didn’t really cover.  Bruce Sutter was one of, if not THE, inventer of the splitter.  And from the day he got to the majors, the Cubs had him in the bullpen.  The reason was that the splitter did major damage to the elbow ligaments.  Starters that threw 7+ innings every five days were much more susceptible than a closer that threw an inning for two out of three days.  Sutter was also the original “closer”, as all end of the game pitchers before him were “firemen”.  Guys like my favorite player, the miserable old fuck named Goose Gossage would pitch 3-5 innings to close a game when needed.  Sutter didn’t do this.  And even with the relative babying of his arm compared with his counterparts, he only lasted about nine years before his elbow exploded.  Clemens could have swallowed a gallon of horse semen every day for all I know, and it would have built his muscles and aided in recovery.  But it wouldn’t protect his ligaments - in fact, it would put more strain on them.
You want my honest opinion?  I think Clemens was the most advanced user of them all when it comes to doping.  I think he was doing things like Lance Armstrong, with transfusions of high oxygen content blood, on top of the EPO shit.  Not anabolic steroids or the like.  Bonds used cream and clear, saw how it worked, and did exactly what he was told to do.  Sheffield I believe was told they were supplements and took them because he thought that the good supplements would help his career and he was right.  And while it may be just my opinion - if the drugs any of them took were not illegal until Victor Conte presented them to USADA, then nobody was cheating.  But I still say “who gives a fuck”?  You think any of the NFL superstars from 1965-1985 were clean?  I don’t.

Excellent summation of "why" the splitter destroyed elbows. You're right then. w=When you're physiology is destroyed by the way you throw a certain pitch and not by throwing 250 innings, no type of PED would help.

Sports Illustrated did an article on the 1962 San Diego Chargers of the AFL. The coaching staff interviewed made no bones that the guy were experimenting with drugs supplied by the team. Nobody in 1962 knew what they were talking about. I think it goes even further to the 1956 Olympics where the Russians were definitely gassing. However, I strongly suspect American weightlifter Paul Anderson was on. Anderson had a fair career in the squared circle. Even wrestled at MSG a couple of times. Ernie Ladd was part of that '62 Charger team I just mentioned.

On KKKlassics, a bunch of the historian types were trying to figure out who was the first wrestler to do it. A lot of people think it Ric Drasin who was a glorified jobber for Lebell in Los Angeles. I personally think it was Bruiser. And where did Richard get his gear? He was in Los Angeles at the same time as Ernie Ladd in 1964.

I’m glad that you brought up the ‘62 Chargers. They not only admitted, but were *proud* of the fact that they were being progressive and bringing this “advanced medicine” into football. And what happened from there? The Assistant Head Coach left the team. His name? Al Davis. Is there any doubt that he took what he learned from the Chargers and brought it to Oakland?

As far as first wrestler to use? I’m not going to bet against your pick but I throw out a famous name with even more famous ears: Buddy Rogers. Say what you will, but with his body the way that it was and to just have a heart attack/heart condition at about 42 years old just doesn’t add up to me.
