If Ryan Newman survives that crash, it will be a miracle. Upside down on the roof and another car hits Newman's driver side windshield area going 190+ mph.

A bad scene, we were watching it here. On the live broadcast I didn’t see the airborne hit so I thought his biggest danger was being driver side down with the fuel pouring out into the fire but after seeing the replay I realized he was already in bad shape by that point.

Still no news on Ryan. It doesn't sound good. No one seems to know if he is alive right now.

Same kind of radio silence we had after Dale Sr's crash. Watching the replay on FS2 now.
EDIT: He's in serious condition, but injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

So last night I was in Charlotte for the Jay and Silent Bob reboot roadshow with Kevin Smith (movie RULES btw). I actually turned my phone off right before the movie started and enjoyed the show. When it's over I took my phone out of my pocket and had a text from a friend saying "Dude, I'm pretty sure Ryan Newman is dead!".

Now, as I've mentioned here before, I have a good friend who's an engineer for Roush racing, he's been there since 95, has worked in Nascar since the late 80's. I told him probably 10 years ago with all the safety stuff they've added to these cars since Dale died it would take some FLUKE incident for someone to die in these cars now. Like the driver having his visor up and something coming through the window netting and hitting him, the windshield to get crushed out in a big crash and something coming in and hitting the driver, hell, like a guy having a heart attack, but these cars are so safe now you just aren't going to get killed. He told me I was crazy..then about 5 years ago I argued that with him again and he actually agreed with me some and said some of the cars they've gotten back in the shop after crashes, 20 years ago they'd be burying the driver and now they just walk away fine. So I go to twitter and see video of the crash and was like "well, I was wrong about these cars..". Then I find out he's just in serious condition? Holy hell..again, if you can live through THAT in these cars....

Awesome! According to news reports, Newman has been up walking around the hospital and talking/joking with friends, family, and hospital staff.

NASCAR doesn't get a lot of credit but the safety initiatives that have come about after Dale Earnhardt Sr's death have really made a positive impact and saved numerous drivers' lives. NASCAR and the Roush Fenway shop should be proud for creating / building a car that withstood such a devastating crash and kept Newman alive.

Now if they can just figure out how to keep the car on the track and prevent them from flipping into the air. I fear that one of the cars could fly over a catchfence and land in the crowd.

This will happen someday.  They need to do something, maybe raise up the stands or something.  Eventually, a car will just catch the wind the right way and kill a whole lot of spectators and that will ruin everything.

It may already have happened.  Nobody has ever released the footage of Tony Renna's fatal accident in testing at Indianapolis.  There have been no leaks, no media outlet is interested in getting it.
The rumour is that the accident was so horrific it would either end motor sport in toto or would traumatize anyone watching it.  There are only rumours about what happened to Renna, and there may be lots of Chinese whispers, but it seems that the catch-fencing above the barriers literally shredded him.
And bits of Renna and car ended up where, during the 500, there would normally be crowds.
Of course cars in the old days went into the crowd; 11 dead at Monza in 1961, a dozen on the Mille Miglia in 1957, two dozen at Monza in the 1930s, and 80 at Le Mans in 1955...

Since he's walking out of the hospital I'll have a little chuckle.

They flew off his feet during the crash, into the stands where someone is trying to sell them on EBay as "all that'S left of Ryan Newman".
