for a "dream" Monday Night Football booth with Peyton Manning

https://nypost.com/2020/03/05/espn-p...eyton-manning/

Even at age 75, Sunday Night Football's Michaels is considered the best NFL play-by-play announcer. Former ESPN Monday Night Football broadcaster Mike Tirico joined NBC in 2016 as Michaels' successor-in-waiting. The New York Post's Andrew Marchand reports that Michaels and Manning would form a "dream booth" that would give ESPN leverage in its upcoming NFL rights negotiations. He adds that ESPN is also considering former Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers. Monday Night Football's current team of Joe Tessitore and Booger McFarland is considered lackluster.

Report: ESPN may offer Peyton Manning $20 million a year to join Monday Night Football

Front Office Sport reports that ESPN would be willing to top Romo's groundbreaking $18 million-per-year salary to get Manning in the booth as the lead analyst for Monday Night Football. The $20 million figure would top the$19.2 million Manning earned in his last season in the NFL in 2015. ALSO:Tony Romo's $18 million/year deal shows that networks will pay big in next TV rights deal.

This is all talk, no action. For Al Michaels to make this sort of move, he'd have to approve of the deal. I cannot fathom why he'd want to do that. He is in a great situation and will only be on the air probably for a few more seasons given that he turns 76 in November. At NBC he calls what is usually the best game of the week, works with an analyst he likes, with production people he likes, and gets the Super Bowl every three seasons per the current rotation, all of which I expect will carry over to the new broadcast contracts. At ESPN, he'd be working with a rookie announcer with no guarantees of them getting along or meshing professionally (Al and Boomer Esiason weren't on speaking terms by the end of the 1999 NFL season, to the point that they didn't communicate in the booth conversationally during Super Bowl XXXIV).

ESPN's MNF schedule has some good games, but also has a lot of dogs. Al Michaels was supposed to call MNF with Joe Theismann effective 2006 when Monday Night Football moved to ESPN from ABC. Al was very unhappy that the ESPN SNF production crew was retained for MNF on ESPN while the ABC MNF production crew was let go and then essentially went masse to SNF on NBC. Al also was upset that the marquee MNF schedule he'd previously called would effectively move to Sunday night and be replaced by the old SNF schedule with some far from attractive names. This is what put in motion his move to NBC. He wanted to get the best games and keep working with his friends. Why would he give up his current great situation to step into the unknown in the sunset of his career?

They need a straight as an arrow PBP guy to pair with Peyton, and he needs to have a great voice. Peyton's voice is quite dry and while not annoying, would need to be balanced by a soothing voice. I don't think they need an overly excited PBP guy, because while Peyton isn't animated, it would be nice to let the game play out and you can react your own way while the broadcasters call it straight up.

Sorry man, but I think Jesse's train left the station a few years back.

How can you put a guy named "Booger" on TV, unless you're Dr. Johnny Fever?
